Topic: slide guitar

Lately I've been really practicing a lot with slide guitar and trying out different slides. I love Joe Bonamassa's slide work and the tone of his slide, and am just wondering if anybody knows what kind of slide Joe Bonamassa uses and who makes it? It looks like a steel slide but I just want to know the wall size, the material, and who makes it.

Re: slide guitar

Well it is metal and not  a huge heavy one...about all I know...

Re: slide guitar

I'm sure Dunlop makes a good metal slide. I didn't like the tone of ones I tried. I've used the same bottleneck for years and I'm happy with it. I used a wine bottle. It took several trys before I got one right. Most broke while trying to cut and polish them. You can make your own or buy one. Some stores carry them or you can find them on ebay. Playing slide takes some finesse. Don't give up!

Re: slide guitar

Also, keep an eye on ebay for Chandler Lectra Slides.... I seem them on ebay every now and then. It'd be nice to have one of those...

I asked joe a year ago or so for someone, what kind of slide he used on Cradle Rock and this is what I found out:

Re: slide guitar

I have 2 Jim Dunlop Chrome slides (yeah - standard metal in Dunlop terms is chrome)

Although you can obviously get glass and ceramic too, size is just whatever you feel comfortable with.

I accidentally acquired two - though I lost my first, bought a new one, found the first one! TYPICAL?

Have fun slidin' anyways.

Chrome is your friend.

Re: slide guitar

I have both a metal and a glass slide.  I usually play the metal slide on acoustic and the glass on the electric.  There is something about the glass slide that sounds so sweet.  Or, perhaps I'm just a sucker for Duane Allman.

Re: slide guitar

I'm the opposite. I find that a glass slide works better on acoustic and a metal on an electric. The glass gives it a warmer sound, whereas to me the metal on acoustic sounds too harsh. On electric it's great.

Re: slide guitar

Deezer, I have to agree my friend. Glass on the acoustic is sweet although sometimes steel on a resonator can give a nice edge. Have you tried the Dunlop Mudslide?

Re: slide guitar

Ok. Joe uses Jim Dunlop Chromes, specifically 220 slide.

Glass is best for acoustic though.

Interesting... I've always loved the sound of a metal slide on Acoustic- kinda gives it that dobro type vibe...

You wouldn't happen to be a fan of Michael Hedges, would you?  If so, Ragamuffin is an amazing song!

Re: slide guitar

My favorite slide player is George Thorogood, especially his 1st two albums. Here's an excerpt from his website about the slides he uses and how he gets the sound he does:

"I use a piece of copper pipe, which is what I originally saw Muddy Waters using. We make them ourselves from the same stuff you use to plumb your sink. We cut the pipe into sections, and rough them up with sandpaper to get more drag on the strings. It's a cheap way to make a slide, and I can toss them into the audience at the end of the night..."

Re: slide guitar

Johnny Winter's got his own signature slide out, apparently.
