Re: What song are you listening to right now?

and now your jazz fix for Friday the 13th, ain't no bad luck here in sight. Larry Carlton on guitar, Nathan East on the bass, Bob James on piano and an allstar horn section. I got to meet Kirk Whalum when I lived in Houston many years ago, he is a great sax player

I remember the good old days posting some funny stuff in What Makes You Laugh, Smile ............... and talking tennis every now and then but especially in that 2nd week of July. Hi, I’m good, thanks for asking .  I’ve never been away, I just pop in now and again, but a less active poster .
Porcupine Tree & Steven Wilson solo work - I don’t understand how I missed them first time around… I’ve caught up now.
Have you checked both out yet ?

I have listened to a little, one of my son's friends is a big PT fan. It's not really my cup of tea, guess I'm just too old

Connor Selby - Connor Selby (2021)

Really enjoying this sophmore album from Billericay’s Connor Selby; the follow-up to 2018’s Made Up My Mind.. The album, created under the trying circumstances of working between various lockdowns, consistes of 10,originals, mostly self-penned originals and two with rhythm guitarist Joe Anderton and weighs in at just under 60 minutes; half of the tracks clocking over 6 minutes.  Superb, Blues revue style numbers; swathes of organ from Stefan Redfernbacher and a tight horn section weaving between each other. The BB King style has rarely sounded so good, or so fresh. Not an album to be “clipped” for the vinyl afficienados, Connor is proving that he can build and carry a song; his voice is strong and clear and the guitar playing at times reminds me of Matt Schofield.

Very hard to pick out a single, favourite song, but if I had to, Starting Again and If You’re Gonna Leave Me are 2 quality numbers I’d put forward.

Mike Zito - Resurrection (2021)

Proving there’s life after RUF, Resurrection is Mike’s first [physical] release on his own label: he released a streaming album last year as Covid was begining to wreak havoc worldwide. This is Mike’s 7th albm working with producer/mixer David Z and their first together [I think} since Greyhound, the last album pre-RUF, so there’s an air of circularity.

What hasn’t changed is Mike’s powerhouse performance, and given the free reign of having nobody looking over the shoulder, he opens this new account with a JJ cale cover, I’ll Make Love To You and closes in heart-on-sleeve style with title track Resurrection inbetween which, Mike takes Clapton’s Presence of The Lord and rocks it out. Nine of the eleven tracks are Zito originals, and it’s interesting that Don’t Bring Me Down; Dreaming of You and the smooth In My Blood are the slower “cream” between the two upbeat covers. Back to the originals and When It Rains has a deep, ominous vibe running through. You Don’t Have Me is a great slice of Texas boogie but Damned If I Do is a slow, Blues masterclass that would have Billy Gibbons storking his beard. Running Man & Evil, again are great Zito tracks that lead to the title track Resurrection which, for me falls a little flat. Sure, Zito is putting everything and every trick into it, but there’s no “build”; it peaks, rapidly by 1;30 in, then goes nowhere [musically] for the next 5 minutes; not quite a “freebird” moment.

Not usually something that gets mentioned, but of the albums I’ve bought this year (alright, not that many) this is one of the two best cover artworks I’ve seen - and they arrived on the same day! Really love this what I’d call “outsider art” feel done by South Korean artist Yui Kim - that would make a t-shirt and a half.

Troy Redfern - The Fire Cosmic  (2021)

Another release from probably the pandemic’s most prolific guitar-slinger, and quite possibly his best album to date: certainly opens as his heaviest. The one-two combination of Scorpio and Waiting For Your Love sound like Black Sabbath at a surf-party. This time, Troy has once again been able to record with a band, and what a band, Derby Todd hammering the drums and Dave Marks on bass & keys, with Ron Thal guesting on guitars on On Fire (appropriately). all giving Troy the room to snarl his vocals and shred the slide, as he does best,

If the album does have a heavier vibe than previous, then Lay That Love Down is the tipping point, not least as it sounds how Def Leppard probably would if they embraced their Blues side. be that as it may, we’re back on more traditional Redfern territory with the more acoustic Ghosts, such a great evocative track as is the following Saving Grace. That’s just a short pause though, Sanctify sees Preacher Redfern throttling things back up.for one last rattle before the album closer, the brooding and building Stone, the sort of song you’d wish Paul Rodgers would do the vocals….

Yep, writing, playing & producing, this is Troy at the top of his game, again, except this time he’s also done the artwork himself, aand as hinted earlier, the other of the two best of 2021. Liechtenstein be damned, this is classic 1950s-60s Marvel/DC comic book art. When it looks this good outside, you know you’re in for a treat inside.

Joe is hands down one of the finest jazz guitarists ever. He left us in 1994, same year this was recorded so it's one of his last concerts. You can skip ahead to the concert part of it at 30:00 if you want

this is some pretty good sound for 1969, except it is in a TV studio. He was a better guitarist than he was given credit for. I can to this day still hear the announcer at Woodstock .............. Ladies and gentlemen, Ten Years After. RIP Alvin Lee

Anderson East - Maybe We Never Die (2021)
So, album #3 from one of my favourite "voices" and the shift in direction goes on. We're still talking some of the best "blue-eyed" soul you'll ever hear, but that "Muscle Shoals" edge that was so powerful on the first album has morphed to something with a more contemporary, more sophisticated edgy. To my ear, and I'm stepping out of usual genre boundaries here, somewhere between Prince and Bowie's "Plastic Soul" take on the Phillie sound, at times running a little close to Simply Red and at others matching Glenn Hughes for top-notes. However, it's showing that Michael is continuing to grow and ballsy enough to push himself. An album to turn down the lights and turn up the volume....

Still thanking Curby for this top-tip some years back....

Chrissie Hynde (sings Bob Dylan) - Standing In The Doorway (2021)

Fifty plus years back, it seemed half the world and his wife were covering Bob Dylan songs, often to great acclaim & reward. You had your Johnny Cash and yer Eric Clapton, I’ve even got [Sultan of Twang] Duane Eddy having a fair stab. Then, they suddenly seemed to stop, mid 1970s, but Dylan certainly didn’t, and even now is enjoying [another] purple patch.

And that’s sort of what kindled the idea between Locked-down Chrissie Hynde and James Walbourne, in different parts of London, looking for some spark. And what a spark; recorded over the phone and internet, they’ve put together an album of 10 Dylan songs, mostly from later years. the only “standard” being Love Minus Zero and the next oldest Blind Willie McTell (recorded for 1983’s Infidels album). Chrissie has been experimenting outside her usual genre and at this time, her voice has just the right smokey edge to the languid ululations to really get into Dylan’s hypnotic and intense prose. The Minnesota Misery has rarely sounded so vital, at least in the last 50 years.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

This is just too cool, and it's just the first set. I saw the Dead one time in Houston on the Go to Heaven tour, it was amazing. Then I saw Bob Weir one time much later with the Ratdog band. I'm sure you will recognize John Mayer but can you identify the bass player ? That is none other than Oteil Burbridge formerly with the Allman Brothers, and also Aquarium Rescue Unit with Jimmy Herring  ............. enjoy, I have shut down the Friday work to listen to all of it
