Benjamin Amos - Joy (2020)
Last year’s Christmas album came from Texas, via Hamilton Loomis. this year’s come all the way from a bedroom in County Durham via a displaced Irish lad, Benjamin Amos on the local Butterfly Effect label (responsible for John Stainthorp, so proven track record). This is literally a bedroom recording, but seems Benjamin knows his way round various stringed things. The songs are all traditional Christmas airs and carols, so if you want a break from Merry Last Christmas Everyday and the pros and cons of censoring The Pogues, this Celtic-ly lilted folksie offering is the choice, especially if you can remember the days of The Spinners and The Batchelors. Really pleasant voice, look forward to some original stuff in the future.

David Bowie - Metrobolist (1970/2020)
No, I don’t know what it means either….. Still, it’s subtitle is Nine Songs By David Bowie, if that helps, or you could call it Man Who Sold The World; Remix. Fifty years down the road, Tony Visconti re-mixes MWSTW, aside from After All which stands “perfect” in it’s original guise. I was sceptical at first, especially since the album got a polish on the Five Years box set (5 years ago); would it be worth it. Well, yes; Visconti has really breathed new life into this old dog which marked the start of the Bowie/Ronson working relationship, and really lifts Ronson’s work onto an even par with Bowie, especially Width of a Cricle.
It always seems that Bowie is lauded for “Ziggy” to “Heroes” as his “golden years” (sorry!); but these older gems still sparkle.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

a trip back in time and a history lesson all in one. 1972 was the year I graduated from high school, Mike Harrison came with this album by the same name, a Howlin Wolf cover. The album was recorded in my home state of Alabama with the very famous and sought after Muscle Shoals Swampers. So many artists recorded there, too numerous to list so you get a Wiki link to see for yourself how important they were to blues and blues rock. Jimmy Johnson, Barry Becket, David Hood, and Roger Hawkins were the ultimate professionals in recording excellence. I went right out and bought the album because of them and because I loved Mike Harrison's voice. He was formerly with Sppoky Tooth who I really like a lot. RIP Jimmy J

and for Leslie, I bow in awe of his guitar tone, and really he didn't get enough credit for his vocals. Guitar tone for the ages, tone to die for. RIP big guy, say hello to Felix for us

Peter Parcek’s latest album Mississippi Suitcase is rather good.

Jon Amor - Remote Control (2020)
Jon doesn’t seem to do many solo albums, though he is one of those artists with seemingly more pies than fingers, but Remote Control has seemed to come round fairly quickly since Colour In The Sky; due no doubt to lockdown etc.
Ever the chameleon, this time round Jon has given us something "pop-ier" than usual; somewhere between Prince and Bowie. It’s catchy, (Song And Dance), intense, but not claustophobic (57961 - That’s My Number) but Jon still knows how to rock out (Robot Skin & Moonraker) and when to pull back with the more acoustic Peppercorn and Do-Bop-Bop, the latter I think would work well with a soft reggae feel….? Some nice touches of [electronic] horns through the album too.
In all, as my penultimate album of 2020, a good way to see out the year as it sort of sums Jon up - someone you don’t see all that often, but invariably a treat when he does show.

Steve Hill - Desert Trip (2020)
The bones of this album were laid some years ago when Steve spent several weeks in a camper-van in the Californian desert; it’s only due to the unique circumstances of the pandemic this year that the notes were revisited and this album was fleshed out, as it were.
More acoustic in it’s roots than Steve’s other works, these are definitely “lonesome cowboy anthems” but more of the caravette than chuck-wagon and more than once, Steve has enlisted the back-up of a very subtle horn section. probably one of his strongest albums to date, the juxtaposition of the self-imposed isolation of the desert and the loneliness of lockdown strikes an interesting balance with a zeitgeist anthem Gotta Be Strong and the “twang-fest” that is Judgment Day.
Great stuff; like the desert landscape, not beautiful yet irresistible

Got to admit I keep coming back to this, Drive Home by Steven Wilson. A brilliant song with Guthrie Govan at his best with that guitar solo, the tone, the feel and the playing, simply immense!
