I watched a good bit of it and it wasn't an easy one. Pretty cool to see them retire Kawhi's jersey

Utah St. came to play. 3rd time the Aztecs have come back this year. Both teams running on reserves due to various injuries. Our  7 ft center is out for the season with a pulmonary embolism. His replacement lacks bulk to hold his own so they make do by isolating the opposing big and using our good forward. Each critical game has had one hot hand. The team gets him open and feeds him. It’s beautiful to see such good fundamental bb.

Re: NCAA Basketball

yep they are rolling along nicely, I saw that score this morning, they completely destroyed NM. We (Alabama) are not rolling at all with our big man Herb Jones out for probably several more weeks. Oh well, we were not going to dance next month anyway, and tonight we have to go to Auburn for the season rematch. We beat them badly the first time but this one will not go as well ..................... will continue to watch the SDSU progress, they are definitely a one seed at this point which could turn out hurting them should they be sent east for the opening rounds, lets hope they can stay seeded 1 or 2 in the west

Re: NCAA Basketball

Lot’s of prognostication by fans here over that East #1, and some trepidation. For me, that’s not a problem. This team is as good as they get and the starting 5 are on a roll right now. They are a joy to watch play and just plain-old dominate with some of the purest team play I’ve ever seen directed and often led by Malachi Flynn. Each night, someone has a hot hand and soon they get the ball and an open shot. Other coaches in the league universally say they are near impregnable defensively and they can put numbers up on you with deadly accuracy in their controlling style. The players call it “Lock down” . They just shoot more because they make opponents miss. They killed Wyoming last night. 26 now.

If you want to be the best, beat the rest is our mantra here. That’s the only way to get respect coming from a mid-major. The MWC is tougher than many realize with the high altitude schools up in the Rockies. The East Coast folks might be seeing the Zags and Aztecs making deep runs in March.

Finally getting some love from the press. https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-me … Z1mLK7HJHs

Re: NCAA Basketball

San Diego St saw their winning streak end at home last night against lowly UNLV.  Looks like the pressure of being unbeaten this late in the season finally took its toll on the Aztecs.  It wasn't a good day period yesterday as Gonzaga lost to BYU and top ranked Baylor fell to Kansas.

Re: NCAA Basketball

this might just be some good luck for the Aztecs, they could get a 2 seed in the west instead of being shipped east as a 1 seed. But then the Zags lost too, so I don't know how all of this is going to play out. At the very least it's a wake up call, one that could help more than hurt in preparing for the dance

They had a bad day, assisted by a bad ref crew. They came out shooting cold and stayed there for most of the game. Yani couldn’t even make ft’s- 1 for 6 and he’s a 90% man. You may be right. Crazy week with plenty of top teams taking losses. Time will tell.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Hot damn! Heady times on Aztec Mesa.
We fans dream of seasons like this out here in the NCAA sticks. This is one for the books.

Malachi Flynn took the game by the throat and imposed his will on Nevada last night. Down 16 at altitude, near 11000 in the hostile crowd, a 22 win home streak, senior night, two bigs in foul trouble and our ace outside shooter and solid defender hobbling off to the locker room before halftime with a rolled ankle. Not looking good. Several top ranked teams had already succumbed on this bloody Saturday.

Second half, they did what they do. Flynn, a sure Naismith finalist All-American at guard and probable high NBA pick, poured in 36 with 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Inside, outside and all over the court directing the pace; unstoppable. The defense turned up the wick, Nevada went 7 minutes without scoring, and the SDSU Aztecs won going away as Nevada conceded and let Flynn dribble off the last 20 seconds on the clock. They were just too good to beat, and Nevada was game.

28-1, records galore, a sure 1 seed, and hoping for a deep run in March Madness.
Conference Tourney next week, then the sky’s the limit.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Pretty gritty comeback for the Aztecs.  Lesser teams would've folded.  I'll be pulling for you guys in the tournament.  Nobody, but maybe Kansas is a possible sure thing.  All the rest are beatable on a given night.
I watched the Arizona/UCLA game last night and the home cookin' for the Bruins was the worst I've seen in a decade.  Both teams appeared to be dangerous and that's a word I think will describe tournament games.  The Big Ten might have ten teams in the show and all compete hard on a given night.  Going to be fun this year.

Thanks. Lots of parity this year for sure. It’s going to be entertaining. I agree on Kansas. Flynn just got selected as conference POY and Dutcher unanimous conference COY. Big fish, small pond.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Conference Champ game vs Utah today. Big time on a major network feature early evening on the East Coast. They’re paying attention. 30 wins looking for more, but they’re giving us palpitations lately. Down 16 early last night to Boise and starters in foul trouble again?! No worries, a couple of their patented runs and lights out.
Utah’s good. Uh, oh.
Rick
Edit. Tough loss. Our best player had a flat game and their best made a buzzerbeater. I’m happy Utah Aggies made the tourney though. MWC’s 2 best teams in.
In perspective, they are 2 shots off a perfect record.
