Hot damn! Heady times on Aztec Mesa.
We fans dream of seasons like this out here in the NCAA sticks. This is one for the books.
Malachi Flynn took the game by the throat and imposed his will on Nevada last night. Down 16 at altitude, near 11000 in the hostile crowd, a 22 win home streak, senior night, two bigs in foul trouble and our ace outside shooter and solid defender hobbling off to the locker room before halftime with a rolled ankle. Not looking good. Several top ranked teams had already succumbed on this bloody Saturday.
Second half, they did what they do. Flynn, a sure Naismith finalist All-American at guard and probable high NBA pick, poured in 36 with 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Inside, outside and all over the court directing the pace; unstoppable. The defense turned up the wick, Nevada went 7 minutes without scoring, and the SDSU Aztecs won going away as Nevada conceded and let Flynn dribble off the last 20 seconds on the clock. They were just too good to beat, and Nevada was game.
28-1, records galore, a sure 1 seed, and hoping for a deep run in March Madness.
Conference Tourney next week, then the sky’s the limit.
