Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Caught a Journey Tribute Band playing near me over the weekend ... (they are based out of Nashville (Resurrection)) ... they had the songs and vocals down pretty well.  Haven't spun much Journey for a few decades ... just radio plays ... but now have an ear worm ever since the show. big_smile ... (Gregg Rolie's vocals make these songs imho.)

Journey - Feeling That Way/Anytime ... can't hear one without the other following big_smile

"I was in Space for less than 2 weeks … and suddenly Jeaniene’s back … half the Band is off the gd wagon … we have comedians opening for us … and the nice kid that ran our website is now a kleptof’nmaniac.  Boy ... did you guys miss me!!"  Phil Valentine - Road Manager - Staton House Band

JBLP#251 (unaged) ... thank you Ron.

Cory Henry, former Keyboardist for Snarky Puppy has gone down the solo trail and there are many great videos on YouTube.
To introduce him to peeps here I've got a Bee Gees cover to get your Funk fix going.  Cory's got a lot of Sly Stone flowing through his veins.

Erja Lyytinen - Another World

Erja's latest album arrived in the post at the week-end. She's moving into more rockier territory at thee start of  the album, but gradually bringing it down to a heart-wrenching Bluesy acoustic ballad, Break My Heart Gently driven along by guest Sonny Landreth (who also powers Wedding Day like a locomotive. Opener, Snake In The Grass has some great guitar cross-play with Jennifer Batten (formerly with Michael Jackson).

The (fantastic) album artwork, very reminiscent of the current Marvel Universe trend hints strongly at a "proggy" mood and to be fair, there are  hints of Sci-Fi and eco subject matter (and the title track, Another World is a building "Space Oddity"), but this is an album more for looking ahead and to new horizons. It's certainly brought some new fire out of Erja.

Rewind about 10 years; this is Curse of Lono back when they (Felix-voc/guitar & Neil - drums) went under the name Hey Negrita (as in Rolling Stones..)

John Stainthorp - Into The Light

It's very rare  that I'll purchase vinyl these days, but after seeing this talented, young, local guy (from Richmond, N Yorks) on Friday night, aided and abetted by another skilled young Yorkshire-ish lad George Parkes, I couldn't help it - partly because they had no CDs and partly as beneath the intriguing cover art lay a platter of translucent blue vinyl.

The two guys supported Rebecca Downes' show in Stockton and provided an opening set of acoustic, self-penned numbers with an early Mumford & Son's vibe. Some excellent vocals from John who took in turns with George for the lead runs. Fair to say, John is the creative force and whether out as solo, duo or band form (John Stainthorp & the Laughing Hearts), a name worth keeping an eye on...

Sorry, don't thnk there's any vid from the night, but here's some tasters from the album:-

Rory Gallagher - Blues (2019 compilation)

Spent a very pleasent 3hrs and a couple of whiskeys last night enjoyiing this new 3-disc set of “outtakes” from Rory’s back-catalogue. “Outatkes” they call them… many a band would use them as proper cuts and be well proud. You’d wonder why, after all the recent re-issues of yer man’s 15 albums and a 5 disc set of radio stuff recently released this would be necessary but 50 years after the first Taste album and 24 years on the 14th since his passing, that not reason enough?

Rory was very controlling over what he deemed good enough for his albums, or what worked best, but that’s not to do down these tracks as picked by his brother and son for this collection. I don’t know how many have previously appeared on the countless bootlegs, but here they are, pristine and on the Chess label,  which Rory no doubt would have approved.

The collection is in 3 “themes”; Electric, Acoustic & Live, so take your pick. Listening closely to the acoustic disc, there’s one certain guitarist from Leicester who comes closest to the feel and technique Gallagher had, only he sings too nice… bet no-ones been accused of that for a while…The Live disc really explodesfrom the speakers and as for Rory’s slide prowess, if I had to pick a current comparison, for me Troy Redfern’s your man; not as a copyist,  but for the feel.

Anyway, that’s my twopennworth; even if you’ve got shelves of Rory Gallagher, you need to make room for this.

I got turned onto Pigeons Playing Ping Pong via the Jambase podcast, and I'm really digging this band.  Fans of funky jam bands should dig it.  Really great guitar playing, great groove, fun stuff.

Richard Hawley - Further (2019)

Richard’s 8th studio album and apparently he set himself a couple of challenges; to keep it relatively “upbeat” and to keep the songs around 3 minutes. Well, certainly scored on the latter, I think there’s only one slides just past the 3:30 mark, as for the former, well, My Little Treasures it’s reported took 12 years to write and was inspired by meeting old friends of his father’s at his funeral…and one song is about a cuckold, so lets say the jury’s out on the first objective.

Off My Mind, the opener, screams in like 1970s Lou Reed glam,  while Alone fits more a 1960s Scot walker or Barry Ryan style before the album settles into more usual Americana One track that really grabbed my ear though is Not Lonely, the melody hook reminds me very much of a Hank Marvin solo rarity for 50 years previous, Wahine. Otherwise,a more varied pallet than the previous album, Hollow Meadows; still late evening stuff though.

Lucy Zirins - Unfound (2019)

Have to thank my buddy John on t'other forum for “unfinding” this one for me as without his casual mention last week, it would have slipped by, and for the first studio output from Lucy since 2015, that would be a serious omission.

While most women bluesy singers seem to have their sights on Etta or Janis, Lucy remains seemingly focussed on Joni Mitchell, with a side-order of Leadbelly, and why not? On this latest offering, she’s also upping the stakes by adding more texture, recording as a trio with James Knight (drums & bass) and Pete Billington (piano & keys). Opener One Long Goodbye is by far the most commercial & radio friendly cut I think I’ve heard Lucy do, yet still retains her “soul”, while the extra backing makes Right Side of Wrong and Stuck In Motion comparatively “rowdy” and the background drone to The Fall wouldn’t be out of place on a Clannad album.

So hard to find the prime cut on this album; Hold Back the Night maybe..? The piano led Unfound and Back To Sleep, or do you go where the titian-tressed songstress is at her most beguiling, the simplistic, acoustic cuts like Clean Condition or Don’t Look Back maybe Close To The Wire..

Deceptively charming, chilled music with heart; has to be a 90% for me (and that’s without the bag of sweeties…).
