Re: The Mentulls

Announcement of a "side" project from The Mentulls:-

The Pipe Brothers Project is a new, all instrumental rock outfit formed by brothers Andrew & Jamie Pipe as a side project to their main band, the award winning UK rock band ‘The Mentulls’.

With already armfuls of experience between them, the brothers can boast playing and working alongside some of the musical greats and some of their all time heroes from grammy award winners to rock legends. Although still in their early 20s, they often stand up to be counted amongst many of the most experienced pros in the business.

Their new single “XLV” with it’s catchy melodies and rock tight groove was written and produced by Andrew & Jamie and engineered by John P Taylor. In the drum stool for the sessions was in demand session drummer Tim Hillsdon.

The brothers, whose work with their main band The Mentulls has been declared as “the future of prog rock” (Get Ready To Rock) take influence from the innovative and influential music of the 60s and 70s while keeping their feet firmly in the present.

Although it could be seen as a bold move to release purely instrumental music through this project, the brothers seem to relish the challenge, as Andrew explains “Although we love writing songs with lyrics, we always believe instrumental music can be as powerful as a great song. At the end of the day they are just songs without words, the right melody can be timeless and speak volumes.”

Personally, I'd describe it as very Focus-ed......  wink

PS Happy birthdays to Jamie & Nick

Nice one Andrew & Jamie on their page feature in the current (Classic Rock) Prog magazine. More for Pipe Brothers Project than The Mentulls but still, well deserved, if a little overdue.

**EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT**

*The Mentulls add vocalist David Neil Crabtree to the band line up*

We are pleased to welcome vocalist David Neil Crabtree to our ranks.

As well as adding his fantastic soulful voice to the band, David also has many musical influences in common with the rest of us which makes him a great fit for the band.

We can’t wait to share this new 4 piece line up with you all! Tour dates to follow!

Also a shout out to our great friend John P Taylor for doing an amazing job as guest singer at our two recent festival appearances in the summer while we found a permanent vocalist.

Re: The Mentulls

Georgian Theatre: Stockton-On-Tees - 17th May 2019.

Even though it’s not billed as such, it’ll come as a surprise to many to know that these “whippersnappers” are celebrating their 10th Anniversary (that’s the “tin” one) on the road (including the recent year’s hiatus). So, for a band who I can remember being too young to be in certain venues, let alone melt the stages, how are they marking this milestone on their careers? Has Andrew had fashioned a new guitar, with frets made from exotic metals and Swiss jewelled movement on the tremolo? Perhaps Jamie has splashed out on having a rare keyboard lovingly restored by an order of Zen artisans on the peaks of the Arkengarthdale? Or maybe Nick has responsibly sourced and organically grown and new drumkit (in a Roger Dean fashion)? Nope, not even close. What they’ve done is been out and got themselves a David Neil Crabtree. A what!?!

Yes, The Mentulls are back on the road, twin barrels burning and from what I saw of only his 3rd gig with the band (and 1st “home town” show) are past just testing their new vocalist & more and boy, are they having fun again. In fact, they were absolutely on fire. Taking over the vocal duties, David has really opened the stage up for Andrew to give full vent on the guitar. Not only, but the “newbie” also swings a fair Les Paul allowing Andrew to bounce off him and launch some Wishbone twin guitar in the style of his hero Andy Powell. Not only that, he can tickle the ivories a bit so Jamie can at times free his left hand from bass note duties and really go to town on the big Hammond he now has on stage, or counterpoint himself on the other 2 keyboards he uses. Aside from not playing bass, the only other thing David didn’t touch all night was the drum kit but then, with “Stig of the Drums” Nick in the driving seat, no passengers needed. First and foremost though, David was drafted in for vocal duties, and he’s a big lad with a good set of pipes; he really brought out the vocal side of The Mentulls’ catalogue. The song to watch for though is their cover of Jack Bruce’s Theme from An Imaginary Western, where he’s really pushing and you hear a glimpse of a big voice to really come out. Once they settle and start writing together…. ho boy!!!

Not that it’s all the newbies show though; Andrew Jamie & Nick have quickly picked up the reins and have quickly settled back into their groove, and its really great to see and hear them again launching into Silver Bird, Reflections (I & II) and Time Flies where Nick launches into his solo stint. I swear that boy is part Praying Mantis, the speed his arms flick around the kit and the force and precision he makes contact on the skins. And then there's their own showcase, Instrumentull, where they each showboat and even David gets in on the act as a bona-fide band member. They take things from high-brow prog to downright dirty rock’n'roll, and love every minute.

Verdict, well taking a year off was a big gamble, but they’re back and raw to the bone. Tenth anniversary, if you don’t get this, then the only “tin” involved is your ears!!!

Re: The Mentulls

It's been a fantastic year for THE MENTULLS with new boy David Neil Crabtree smoothly fitting into the band and adding something very special. We've had sold-out shows and some nearly full houses, so the band would like to thanks all the promoters and venues for their hospitality (it does make a difference!) and of course to the fans who came out in their droves to the shows.

Here's a video clip of 'After The Rain' from our recent packed-out show in Elland, West Yorkshire:

April 24th - Drummonds, Aberdeen
April 25th - Backstage at The Green Hotel, Kinross
May 1st - The Platform, Morecambe (special double header with The John Verity Band)
May 7th - The Maltings, Farnham
