Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Getting some rotation at the homestead is an album from back in 2004; I Am by Atlanta son Michael Tolcher. A sort of Country/Blues/Pop-rock amalgam. This features a track that number of you should recognise, Sooner or Later.

Bit of an up-and-down career path as his next album didn't follow for a decade; however, what may be of note is that I Am features one Warren Haynes on guitar/vocals....

Ariel Posen - How Long   2019
What is it about these Canadian chappies that they can manage such an eloquent musical statement with such brevity? This album manages to just tip 33 minutes yet takes the listener on a virtuoso ride deft chord changes and alternating sweet and blazing licks. That has to be the only downside to this debut collection, the fact that it’s so soon over. True, there are 10 songs on the album, but 3 of these are short, instrumentals; more preludes than full songs,  but their tonal qualities are shining.

For the songs themselves, there’s a lot of the early John Mayer in them, Things That I’ve Said;  How Long; Fade & Can’t Stop Thinking About You are very reminiscent of our Aynsley Lister, Bluesy & organic. Ariel’s vocals are pleasant & competent but it’s as a guitarist’s guitarist that brings this album out, the arrangements, the musicality and the detail in the songs is outstanding.

Definitely something a bit special - 85%

Well I finally gave this guy a respectful listen and I like this music.  Very much like The Bros. Landreth.  I've been a big fan of Canadian artists since my exposure to David Gogo.  "How Long" is a great song among many on the LP.

Ariel is "live" sideman with Bros Landreth - word is they're doing a studio album for later in 2019. I'll be seeing Joey in April, so  I'll try and get direct info.

Saw Ariel last week, on his 2nd visit to Ashington within 12 months and signs are he'll be back again before too long. Seems to  have an affinity with the town much like Ryan McGarvey has with Hartlepool, which is warming that he'd rather play a small town than the nearby city Newcastle. He's currently based in S. Ireland and was a surprise at the gig when the announced encore, in tribute to his new home, wasn't a Rory Gallagher but a John Martyn number.

One from the archives - rare live footage of Welsh band Lone Star from their hay day back in 1977 (that's why sound and vision aren't quite 4K).

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Jon Amor - Colour In the Sky (2019)
Believe or not, this is Jon’s first solo album in a decade; since Crooked Room, not that he’s exactly been idle the past 10 years,  what with Jon Amor Blues group, Jon Amor Band, a Hoax reunion, Boom Band, DVL and a couple of semi-acoustic jaunts with Joel Fisk, no, not exactly idle….

Even so, that makes this something of an event; Jon’s back woorking with Stephen Evans and fleshed a band out with Paddy Milner on piano and Bob Fridezma on Hammond; Clive Deamer on drums for the majority of the tracks, then roped in several mates round the doors, such as Mark Barrett on a couple of tracks, Joel Fisk lending some slide guitar on Faith Reborn & Elephant , Andrew Murphy playing guitar on Happiest All-Time Low and a great vocal cameo from  Ian Siegal on the Brel-esque San Bernadino. And rather than the heads-down rocking albums of the JABG & JAB, or the Blues monsters from The Hoax days, this album is a pretty eclectic mix of styles, though the mood is generally upbeat. Illuminous Girl starts acoustic and morphs into a Prince influenced number, balancing with the urban opera of San Bernadino. Happiest All-Time Low is a light jazz, bar-fly lament and on first couple of listens Drunk On Your Love seems to owe a lot to Norweigan Wood. if Faith Reborn is a blisterinng opening rocker, then Sentinals is it’s antithesis closer.

Some may say that there’s a touch too much diversity on this album, but then, there’s more than just blue when you look at he sky at dusk or dawn. Worth checking Bandcamp for digital or physical copies.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Elles Bailey - Road I Call Home (2019)
So the sophomore album from the lass from Bristol; once again, worked on across the pond in Nashville. I’d really like to say that I like this album, but I can’t, ‘cos I love it! After testing the water with Wildfire in 2017, Elles has found out exactly what works for her and has turned each facet up to the max. She’s not the biggest voice I’ve heard, but she’s found how to project it to maximum effect. It’s Americana Blues Country without trying to imitate Taylor Cyrus (or whatever the name is; Mylie Swift?).

Quickly cherry-picking the songs, What’s The Matter With You is a smooth bluesy ballad; as is Foolish Hearts but it’s Light In the Distance that pulls the heartstrings.  Road I Call Home gallops along as does opener Hell or High Water and Medicine Man is a bone-fide set staple.

Recorded round Nashville, the album almost manages a Muscle Shoals vibe except that the horns aren’t as strident, but add more texture and warmth under the Hammond which looks like was in the capable hands of Jonny Henderson. There’s a great, full yet accessible quality to the sound which really carries Elles’ husky tones in a way that compliments as opposed to challenges; rootsy and vulnerable at one time, then brash & brassy at the next.

Not genre stretching, but a real quality piece of work.
