Hi JBWM. Thanks for the post etc.
I am not sure how I want to vote in the poll. (BTW everyone, you can see the poll if you are logged in)
I'm grateful for the consideration though.
my first instinct is to not change but I am not naive that I don't know the technology is old. Thats about as far as my tech knowledge goes though. Please also bear with me with my descriptions, I don't know if using proper terminology.
I'm not sure what other comments you have received regarding bugs etc but I try to only report to the office when I notice something, to let y'all know rather than complain.
I don't recall exactly what you refer to with no changes being requested from us but I do remember some jamesrossadvertising username making things black and red and that wasn't preferable to many of us. So I think maybe it might have seemed like we had more information at that time than we actually did. Again I am not sure what feedback y'all get beyond whats commented on here or to me. And I am not at all bringing up the other site from about ten years ago - I think maybe before you worked there - it was full of serious security issues and there was much confusion and misunderstanding of feedback in that era. That doesn't sound to be part of this current discussion but if it is that is a whole other discussion IMHO.
The specific bugs I know of - one older one from last year or so, the security cert. IIRC it expired and someone fixed it but some of us still had problems getting in...I had to allow an exception via my internet security at the time and others tell me when their phone updates operating system they get error again. I noticed when I am logged in the padlock in the browser address bar is green but if not logged in it is orange/yellow with a line through it.I think when that happened a while back I got a message saying it was a self certified cert or something and perhaps and extra step was needed so that it wouldn't be a flag for certain internet security programs but I am not positive. For whatever that's worth.
The issue a couple weeks ago was odd...myself and a few others noticed some posts go missing. recent posts that were from within a few days of posting but they'd be there then not be there then be there then gone. nothing critical but very odd and a new occurrence.
At same time on my tablet - i get this message when going to forum via bookmark
"This PHP environment doesn't have MySQL support built in. My SQL support is required if you want to use a MySQL database to run this forum. Consult the PHP documentation for further assistance"
i still get that error via tablet but on lap top and pc i first had to go thru main site link to get here for a couple days but now can get via bookmark.
New users are finding their way here so that is a plus in terms of bugs IMHO.
My thoughts on upgrade or not have to do with many factors, and my personal memories of the history of the Joe Bonamassa forum.
Number one reason I am not favoring an upgrade is the possibility of losing content. I have been aware of the chance it could all go poof for years anyway and I will save some stuff in case it does.
part of the beauty of this place compared to other types of social media is that it is more easily referenced...the office can post info for the fans for reference etc.
Everything Joe had contributed over the years....show reviews etc. none of it critical though I guess. So much of it is personal to me and I am trying to not let that affect my feedback to you but its hard. I do recognize that though.
Its just not clear to me the importance of the history to Joe and J&R and I would yield my preference to that of course.
I'm not against new better features but beyond fixing potential security problems, I don't personally need any. I like being able to have discussions here easily as opposed to instagram etc. Many many over the years have hoped to be able to post photos in the messages but that does not mean a great deal to me personally. and its become obvious that this is a more comfortable type of platform than other types of social media for some of us, of various ages too, but obviously we are in the minority. I don't think upgrades are inherently improvements in all ways but if necessary for it to work safely than yeah.
I was told and under the impression otherwise that the original forum - before this version - was somewhat a promotional thing but also became a 'home' to many of us including Joe, over the years. It was the first thing we'd check in the morning and throughout the day. Before facebook etc. and now with instagram where Joe has thousands of likes within minutes of posting...its obviously not the same for all of us.
It still has some features instagram and facebook and twitter don't have so I think it has value beyond my personal attachment to it. I am eternally grateful for the friendships this forum has afforded me over the years. Eternally grateful!!!
As far as an upgrade, I am not completely opposed bit it isnt clear also if J&R might want to use it in more of a marketing/promotional way. if it became so popular that lots more users would be active on its going to need more attention from the office etc to keep under control
I'm happy to continue to volunteer to help moderate and I know other fans would do the same but I keep it to deleting spam and any very terrible posts. The low activity now makes that manageable and I am glad to help to be able to preserve this place and not have it be a burden in time and cost to J&R. If it get an upgrade and a push say via email newsletter it seems like it could become a bigger thing that requires more office attention and I don't have any way to gauge that now to best respond to the poll.
If we could get an upgrade to prevent the place from being hacked etc without much in terms of resource commitment from J&R I am all for that as my fears the historical content will be gone will remain anyhow due to old technology.
So I will work on saving some content here as its important to me and keep thinking on how I personally feel about an upgrade. Knowing what it means to J&R could help in trying to decide that but without more info I just ask for a little time to work on copying some old posts and ask for some sort of advance notice before any potential upgrade or down time.
I'm also curious how much of a security risk it is to not upgrade.
