Topic: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Lately I've been thinking what's out there besides blues rock.  Besides 70 year old icons.......

I came across this band researching a cool song on a Netflix film.  Deep dove into their catalog and found this gem.  An Awesome wave by alt - j.  I'm glad I can still enjoy music like this.  I'll be jiggered but music is still quite alive.

I've started this thread because many here are music lovers first and have found unusual great tunes.  It can be anything rock, heavy metal, whatever, but it's not blues and not blues-rock. I look forward to first responders.

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Well Curb that is some nice music in its own right.
I don’t go out side of blues rock too much these days.
But when I do  I go back and listen to a lot of old 70’s fusion music like Return to Forever and Jean Luc Ponty ect
   Or prog rock.
I can listen to classical music when the mood strikes as well.

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Wow, this got me thinking about some of the punky/new wave stuff I used to listen to. I offer The Saints - Kissing Cousins. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0vtFqLVVxbQ

And I still enjoy Lords of the New Church (New Church) once in a while. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOnm8449vWg

And let's not forget Flesh for Lulu (Siamese Twist).  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l4ue6sbmkGI

And I still listen to Iron Maiden, UFO, MSG, etc.

LIVE MUSIC IS BEST

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

You know there's a lot of great music out there but nothing like the blues, at least to me. Buddy Guy once said 'the funny thing about the blues is that when you play the blues you no longer have the blues.'

But in the spirit of this thread there are countless musicians that write incredible songs, not blues songs, but great songs. People like John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby (look up 'Spider Fingers' on Youtube) Stephen stills, Milk Carton Kids, James Taylor, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Heather Maloney, the list is endless. But to me the blues, the real blues not the shred fest that is trying to be sold as the blues, speaks to me in a whole different language. From the heart to the heart.

Great idea for a thread Curby.

Sorry... edited to add links to some great music.

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Have to say, since Christmas I've been seriously enjoying the band Halestorm. Lizzy Hale has an almighty voice with a range that copes with covers from Judas Priest to Lady Gaga, Pet Benatar to Marilyn Manson. And her brother AreJay is a beast of a drummer. On a different tack, through 2018, following a friend's nagging, I really got into Steven Wilson and his approach to Prog.

As for concerts, I made a New Year resolution to try and avoid seeing all the bands I saw last year (apart from 1st timers),so no King King, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Ian Siegal, Wille & The Bandits, Sean Webster etc. just to try and freshen things up as getting a little jaded with Blues.

Grace Sewell - FMA

Caught Grace singing with Darryl Hall on his Darryl's House show and was duly impressed with this Aussie talent.

As a fan of Amy Winehouse and early Adele, you can see their connection to this young woman.  The fact that Quincy Jones produced FMA is telling.  A weird cover of Leslie Gore's 60's feminism, "You Don't Own Me", shows off her chops, but could've
been better without the rap inserted.
The rest of the album is quite good and I urge my buds here to give it a listen.

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Heard this today on the radio - didn't like the music but the lyrics were interesting. And I grew up in the culture where lyrics meant a LOT, if not everything.

The Avett Brothers - High Steppin' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwebrzEldA0 - also the truck in the video is awesome

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Stumbled across this jam that includes two Snarky Puppy members.  The guitarist just kills it.  Impressive.....

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Don't know exactly how I stumbled upon this band that I've known for a long time but somehow the music wasn't in my library.
Decided to pick up their first two albums, Out Of the Shadow and Descended From Vultures from Rogue Wave.
This stuff definitely fits in this topic.  Really interesting music from 2003 to 2005.  Those guys captured lighting in a bottle in those days.  Worth checking out for some of you...

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

I don't know why but Harry Styles just makes me pay attention to his music.  His 1st album was a big hit back in 2017 and I'm always afraid "the handlers" will tip the apple cart following that first album magic.  Course Harry was quite successful in that boy band who's name I can never remember.

This new one, Fine Line, is quite good for my tastes.  Reminds me a little of a Bruno Mars fun album.
The songs are uniquely tapping different music styles.  I hear a little of McCartney and CSN on more than a few songs.  My favorite moves from day to day.  From the R&B "Adore Me" to the country "Canyon Moon" to the slightly bluesy "She".

I think this album falls in my top ten for this year.  Course Harry's not for everyone here in the forum, but it's a great little album.

Re: Indulgent but Interesting - Different Music

Recorded back in 2016 when the five lads probably weren’t old enough to drink in the places they played, I’m listening to Cuig’s New Landscapes album. It's rooted in traditional Irish folk music, all instrumental but with a more modern feel; a mix of covers & self-penned airs and jigs. It’s fresh, vibrant and I may just bypass Valentine’s and start early for St Paddy’s

The Cure - Disintegration (2019 re-master)
If anyone asked me which album encapsulates The Cure, then this would be my choice. Not their “darkest”, nor their “pop-iest” but for the way the strong and immediate melodies interplay through the songs yet still sound edgy and unsettling, it has to be their peak. Not an album that you’d chose if marooned on a desert island, this is more the soundtrack of being cast adrift in an open boat for a week on uncertain seas.
Not only, but included, and also re-mastered in the set is the “live” version that followed the original Disintegration, Entreat, this time, full augmented with the 4 “missing” songs from the original shows.
And then, Mr Smith has been raiding his vaults with 70 minutes worth of demos, outtakes and alternate versions, was well as an uber-rare Solo track…
I would say “Just Like Heaven”, but that’s getting a bit  out-of-step - from the previous studio album
