Topic: Lincoln Durham - UK Tour

Don't know where to start, or if I would, to catagorize this guy; another hot pick from the recent Classic Rock blues album reviews. There's the "busker" style I'd guess, similar to Seasick Steve, to this young guy from Austin, TX, with his beat-up Gibson acoustic, makeshift amps, resonators, violin, bass drum, stomp box, suitcase and tincan microphones, but there's also an old, dark soul in his voice and lyrics. Raw, country, folk  and blues, with some killer edge slide guitar and  "pained, gripping vocals that sound as if Ray LaMontagne swallowed razor blades and took vocal lessons from Howlin’ Wolf."

UK FRIENDS: We are very sorry to say that due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to cancel Lincoln's UK tour. We arrived at the airport yesterday, airline documents in hand showing his equipment was within their own size and weight regulations for musical instruments, but in the end they chose to disregard that information completely, told us it would be $3600 to fly the gear, and would not accept one of the cases at all. We are beyond devastated that this has happened as we have flown internationally on the same airline with Lincoln's gear in the past without any trouble. In the end, even if we could have added another case to get them to at least accept everything he had, we simply could not afford it. Please know that we tried absolutely everything possible to try and make this work, and we truly appreciate your understanding. We have a long battle with the airline ahead of us. We would like to offer everyone who purchased an advance ticket for one of the canceled shows a FREE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD of Lincoln’s new album EXODUS OF THE DEEMED UNRIGHTEOUS before it is released on 22 October. Please send a picture/screen capture/email receipt for the tickets purchased to info@lincolndurham.com and stayed tuned for instructions.

Can't say fairer than that - didn't know they had Ryanair in the US.....
Fingers crossed for next time.

Re: Lincoln Durham - UK Tour

Newcastle; Cluny2 - 7th Sept.

Can’t believe I’ve waited 6 years for this show, ever since the last one was nix’ed by Delta Airlines. Not your typical Blues player, though there’s a strong “rootsy” element to his work; how to best describe Lincoln Durham? I’d roughly say, think somewhere between Seasick Steve and “Love It To Death era Alice Cooper. Best I’ve seen is “Lincoln Durham is a Southern-Gothic Psycho-Blues Revival-Punk One-Man-Band with a heavy amped edge, preaching the gospel of some new kind of depraved music”, but if it’s gospel,  then his God is the jealous, wrathful one of the Old Testament. Lincoln isn’t so much re-hashing the old Spirituals of the past, he’s re-writing them for modern sins.

That’s a bit deep, what you actually get at this misanthrope’s gig is a coiled spring of a performer, barricaded behind a deconstructed drum kit and an in-turned battered amp, furiously lashing chords and slide licks on alternately a de-tuned, wide-bodied Gibson and a cigar-box guitar while howling woes between a standard Mic and a “coffee-tin” one for resonance. This wall of dark fury assailed the 100 or so souls in the cavern-like Cluny, until mid way through the 5th song, when “Into The Amp Came The Gremlins” causing a brief cessation of the proceedings while some quick repairing and cursing (not “cussing”) went on and Lincoln re-started “Into Heaven…”.

One brief glitch shouldn’t mar a show, and despite one or two nervous glances to the offending article Lincoln picked up his stride and carried by a charged Newcastle crowd, the show ramped ups fervour; Lincoln was like a serpent-handling preacher with his “congregation”, compelling yet unsettling, especially when, toward the end,  he brought out his “axe”. We all know “axe” to be a “slang” for guitar and Gene Simmons is probably the best known for his Axe Bass, but this guy reverses it,  he actually means “axe” as in a 4ft felling axe with a pick-up and a jack plug, and rudimentary headstock from the flattened handle, but I can tell you, a piece of hickory never sounded so good.

All in all, a mesmerising, energetic set that deserved a rapturous cheer at the end. As I said at the start, this was a long-time coming return visit to the UK, but definitely anticipated. Lincoln has promised more frequent, hopefully annual visits in the future, as well as a brace of new albums; so long as you don’t expect songs about fluffy kittens, puppy kisses and soft, butterfly caresses, keep you eyes peeled for tour info. While this guy deserves success and bigger venues, it’s these claustrophobic gigs that you get the full force.

Plenty of cameras were out, but can't find any UK YouTube footage at the mo, so suck on this performance from last month:-
