Re: The Football Topic

could be you have something there because I see his assistant coach catching him in the act and not flinching whatsoever....... or it could just be compulsive-obsessive behavior that manifests itself when he is extremely nervous. My last thought and will leave it at this, he's trying desperately to stay awake because the game itself is so boring. I know, I watch a lot of golf, like the pot calling the kettle "black"  wink

Good one Tres!
Well done Wales. I hope you watched because that was hardly boring. A stirring match  and proof that a good team effort can beat individual stars. Wales can beat Portugal if they play like they did today.

Brilliant match, I know I'm biased but easily the best in the competition so far.  All 4 goals were fantastic.  My country has far exceeded expectations so any more is a huge bonus.

Got my wish, but not without biting my nails to the quick. Die Mannschaft squeaked by in the match that was probably the best two teams in the running.

Best two teams?

Wales may not win the competition but at the moment they are top of the 24 in games won and Belgium, who Wales beat. are second.  Germany & Italy are only 3rd and 4th.

Wales also tops the list of Goals scored and Goal attempts

Good luck. I go by overall performance in major tournaments over the years. Germany and Italy are always at the top.

what about 2004? Greece.

..and 1992? Denmark.

Italy have only won it once.

Euros have thrown up results that are very different to the World Cup, - where are Holland this time?

A contest featuring teammates on opposite sides. Which has the best supporting cast, will it be Ronaldo or Bale that do the deed?

Re: The Football Topic

I suppose there was some kind of 'natural justice' to it all. The Pantomine Diva is crocked in the 8th minute and forced to retire after 25 and then his erstwhile undersung colleagues go on and win the bloody thing. Couldn't make it up really.

Well done Portugal. Tactical victory, with some excellent goalkeeping and team discipline thrown in. The goal was stunning as could have been the free kick a minute earlier.

France will and should be kicking themselves. Taking the foot off the gas as they did. I thought Giroud was substituted too soon, as was Payet, although he cannot thrive in this shackled left side role anyway. Pogba was too deep and even with Sissouko's sterling efforts the Franch failed to impose themselves on a Portugal team which had been prematurely deprived of its principal player.

I'm no great CR7 fan, although respect his indisputable talent. Portugal have been finally rewarded for their team ethic, indomitable spirit, for getting there and 'being there' and also because a reward is also long overdue them.

I am surprised, but then there have been a few in this EC. It hasn't been a classic competition by any means but that won't matter to Portugal. Well done!

Re: The Football Topic

Yes, well done to Portugal. I know many in our community here and there is some dancing in the streets. Even when the star went down they rallied and played hard. A long time coming for them. Well earned. The winning strike was a clean death-blow to the French hopes and home field advantage. Their luck ran out.

The World Cup 2018 ??

It seems this thread has a few spiderwebs in it....:(((

Friday 15th June

Group B

Result:

Portugal 3 - 3 Spain

The game had everything, Oh yeah, it also had that man, Ronaldo, for reasons i don't really need to go into !!!!

If the Final on Sunday 15th July is half as good as this one, we're in for a good one.

Re: The Football Topic

Thank goodness I live in a heavily hispanic town. The coverage on US TV is selective and sparse since we have no dog in the fight, but Telemundo from Mexico is wall to wall footie. It helps that I speak Spanish. Yes, that game was a dandy! Right now Iceland is giving Arg. all they want.

(Vested interest alert...)

Australia was well shafted by the VAR against France.
We've had it in the last A-League season. It hasn't got many fans.

My commiserations to our friends across the pond in England. A well played match, but Croatia wanted it more.

Re: The Football Topic

I've quite enjoyed the quality of the football and overall feel of this world cup. Sure, some unexpected results but I think it is the two most consistent and deserving teams over the course of the tournament that have reached the final.
I'm predicting France will spoil the Croatian fairytale but it would be nice to have a new champion.
