Re: So Joe, do you know who Ed is now?

Doesn't Phil Keaggy and Tommy Emmanuel use loopers live too?

I've tried using a looper and it is tricky; you have to play it right or have to erase the loop just created, then try again with the loops.

don't know what's about Ed.. not interested..
Joe.. cool music.

An early line 6 looper if I am right, big_smile

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Probably not.  My grandkids and their friends have never  heard of Joe either.  But does it matter?

wink Old school the acceptable term for luddite? smile

Yep proud to be a luddite who prefers to hear the sound of his guitar rather than an overly compressed, distorted mess that could be anything. wink

so should Joe be playing acoustic then? Or never use a Tube Screamer? Selective ludditism, - you have to love it! wink

ps, - I am just poking people with a stick for fun here.

People can use what they like.  I just prefer plugging straight in, whether acoustic or electric.  Never found a need for a Tube Screamer or the countless other things people seem to have at their feet.

Just had a listen to this Ed fellow. It's horrible stuff, he can't sing worth **## and all he can do is strum a few chords. What is the big attraction? I really don't get it.

Perfect example of what I was saying earlier, thank you for posting it. A strong opinion voiced publicly admitting your own lack of appreciation and understanding. smile

Yeah I think I does.....we have to get the young into this music or it dies with all of us. We need to bring young bloods to Joe's shows to expose them to greatness

Indeed he is but has Joe heard of him - I don't know?

Re: So Joe, do you know who Ed is now?

Joe doesn't attract the 8 to 21 year old "young women" to his shows.

He basically attracts men 35 to 65, with a lot less disposable cash then young women.
As they have different idea's on what to spend money on.

Listen again then, some of his guitar parts within the loops are quite complex. He's certainly no virtuoso, but to say that all he can do is strum a few chords is unfair and downright wrong.

Re: So Joe, do you know who Ed is now?

I like Ed Sheeran, my 25 year old daughter turned me on to him.  She has seen him twice, including just a couple of weeks ago in Philadelphia. She sent me video of Ed performing Galway Girl, I like that song!

A couple of things this post reminds me of:

How many original fans did John Mayer lose when he started showing off his guitar chops?  A lot of those early and young female fans preferred Your Body Is A Wonderland. Actually I chaperoned a John Mayer show when my daughter was younger and not driving yet, he doesn't do it for her anymore.  However, John Mayer has acquired a whole different fan base a couple times over, the blues lover and the Deadheads!

Another thought: The Beatles had a lot of screaming young female fans when they started out, including me, although I was only 8 years old. The Beatles ignited my love for music.  I was a young girl thinking about Paul seeing me standing there AND wanting to hold my hand. The man still makes my heart flutter.  A girl doesn't forget her first love. tongue

So music is a personal preference and maybe at a young age when we are all trying to figure things out, the delivery of lyrics make a bigger impact than rating the guitarist's overall guitar skills, etc.  Talent is not measured in a one dimensional way, IMO.

The Beatles were POPular, but they were not without talent. I also feel some people judge pop in a negative way equated with lacking talent. Sometimes it just comes down to, you either like someone's music or you don't. wink

On a funny note - my daughter said she felt old at the show when the high school girls in front of her were googling the warm-up act, James Blunt.  Remember You're Beautiful?

So are Bob Dylan’s songs "modern pop music"? Ed Sheeran should be applauded, regardless of him being “our” taste in music, - because he is a singer/SONGWRITER who has brought guitar based music to millions of teenagers. So IMO people should stop being so high ’n’ mighty about him (in the same way that they are about Adele).

The music industry has a massive problem in that it only wants performers who look “right” and do as they are told playing safe corporation music, interestingly both Adele and Ed Sheeran have something in common, - they both introduced a largely unaware population to the music of Bob Dylan, this is brilliant: https://youtu.be/aHMlAYeFeYw Open your closed minds people and judge somebody on their performance not on your taste..... wink Being popular does not mean they are without talent.

Re: So Joe, do you know who Ed is now?

Joe B may well Know who Ed. S. is.  Ed appears on latest Eric Clapton album on a track called 'I Will Be There' although not credited on album as I think Ed's label didn't want him being directly associated with Eric Clapton. Something to do with putting his young fan base off I read somewhere. Seems a shame if that's the case as introducing young audiences to Eric Clapton can only be a positive! Ed also joined Eric Clapton on stage in Japan to perform the song. Ed has said that he has always been a big fan of Eric Clapton. Maybe also of Joe's? Who know's?
