Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

I'd like to say an amen to Rhonda's post!!!!!! Dino, I know you have an image of what success would be for Joe, but I think he has his own plan. Again, young man, you border on insulting the people who give freely of their time to help promote Joe. I can't speak about his pr people because I don't know what they do in different markets. But rest assured that local radio stations ARE called and encouraged to play Joe. The issues with that have been addressed. Don't assume Joe's fans or Street Team are blindly devoted. It's insulting and condescending. It's also an attitude that could limit your future advances. I wishing you lots of succes and some maturity to season it.  Your old friend, Cathy

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

Sorry everybody.  I feel like I turned this thread in the wrong direction.  It reminds me of some older conversations on here.  If anyone wants to delete it all up to the "Great job Dino" posts, that's fine by me.  I'm feeling some guilt myself here, because I haven't called area radio stations, other than WXPR, cause it's just not something I've ever done, and I don't think they'd play him anyway.  I'm not involved in Street Team because my spare time is involved with work and kids.  I find time to come here during my limited free time, because I enjoy talking to other fans and keeping up with Joe news.  Sorry Dino, and Jim, that I turned it into this.  I'll just get back to being preschool teacher and mom who misses being twenty.  Tomorrow's a busy Mon.  ugghh. Bye!

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

If "blindly devoted" means that I accept Joe's talent for what it is, no strings attached, no agenda, then I feel pretty good about myself as a human being.  I admire Joe for what he is.  I said a long time ago in one of my posts that Joe would have to do something really bad in life before I would utter a bad word about him.  No one called me up and told me to be a fan of Joe's and Joe has never called me up and demanded that I go to his shows....I know it's not the way the world works, but in simple words, why can't we just "celebrate" another individuals God given blessings and be supportive.   There are so many horrible things in the world, that I think it is absolutely crazy to bicker about Joe.  No one makes us listen, buy CD's, and there is not mandatory attendance required.  We all have different tastes in music, etc.... if it doesn't make you happy then don't listen, don't buy, and don't go.  When playing and singing is the passion in someone's life why can't we just celebrate, support, and encourage?   pattyluvsjoe

Dear Everyone,

WXPR has not gotten a packet from management, save for when the radio station got the album months ago.  The three largest radio station in this market have not gotten so much as a press release that he is coming.  I know because I got a phone call from all of them after my article came out, "Bonamassa is coming?   When?"

I know that this place lacks a certain objectivity about Joe.  So I am not going to further the discussion other than to say Central Wisconsin radio has not been served.

Becky- you sure didn't offend me with the "redneck" stuff - in fact I was laughing.
I'm from Wisconsin also and know exactly what you mean.  But I am not going

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

Dino,

My intentions are not to cause trouble. Civilized discussion is always welcome and this is all it is.

You would be surprised at how many press packets and CD and promos have been mailed out, only to wind up in the wrong hands. The Media gets press kits like we get junk mail in the mailboxes. They get a lot!

I personally dropped off a CD and press info and photos at the local FOX station in STL. The morning weatherman is a big music buff and even does a song of the day and had his own band. He has seen Joe before and I have even discussed Joe with him on his blog on the stations web site. Well, this packet had his name on it in large letters. Guess what, he never got it. I had to bring another one to the station.

This same scenario exists when I have spoken to the DJ's. Some of DJ's have said that they didn't get the CD. When I spoke with Joe's management about it, I was assured that it had been sent and to whom. I then contacted the DJ to tell them who had the CD and info. Many times this press stuff is sitting on someones desk in a pile with all the other press kits they get on a daily basis.

I am sure if the package or return label had SONY or one of the other big names on it, it would have been opened right away.

Like Patty said, we just appreciate Joe, (and the rest of the band and crew for that matter), for who they are and what they do and the integrity that they do it with!

And I don't think you will find any better fans than those who follow Joe and the band! We are not blind, we are one big family, even though we may have some disagrements! smile

Dino, keep posting. I really do like hearing what you have to say. I think what others get upset about is when someone posts and it is bashing. As long as it is thought out - researched and truthful, respectfully put and not insulting I think anyone here welcomes others opinions. But you have to realize that as you have your opinion, you should be open minded to ours and not be quick to feel like we are bashing you.

Dialogue is important and yields an understanding of others points of view, even if you do not agree. Understanding others points of view creates personal growth. We can all use personal growth.

I really think you have some powerful ideas that should be investigated! Turn this questioning and speculation into an article that makes a statement! Write an article about the struggles of an independent artist versus the major label artist. What privilages is the major label artist afforded? Interview the management side and artist, interview corporate radio and the DJ's, what are they faced with, - they are stuck in the middle. Do they REALLY like playing Van Halen eight times a day seven days a week? Interview public radio, what are their challenges?

You cannot make statements like "Joes team have not any sort of plan aside from getting these bookings." or " It can also be pointed out that the advance work by the staff in off market cities has been lacking.  Local radio, a purely reactionary forcce, has not gotten the phone calls from street team members or publicists or management." When a writer makes those statements they need to be credible and backed by research not speculation or "I bet..".

Articles can be written from a non confrontational point of view which examines an issue. Such as, how does an artist like Joe exist without a major label. Why did PAC decide to book Joe, or did Joe book PAC? Some of your statements come off as if you have a bit of a personal agenda (the comments re: management). If you cannot be objective in looking at and researching the facts, then the writing becomes an editorial. Thus creating confrontation. Also, if you are writing an article that is not an editorial and you cannot be objective and leave the personal opinions out, do not write the article. There is a difference in personal opinion and passion regarding subject matter in writing.

As a concert promoter not just of Joe. I'll chime in on this subject. Almost all artists I have done ask for a contact list for media and radio. As a promoter I feel it is my job to make sure all these outlets are serviced. I send my own press releases since the press releases from artists don't pertain specificly to the particular date.

Do some organizations handle things better than others? Of course. It is however my responsibility to ensure I get the most out of what each organization has to offer. Squeaky wheel theory. I have the most to lose if it isn't properly promoted.

Dino,

~No one is perfect. I believe that there are Street Team Coordinators for different areas. Did you contact that person regarding your concern for the lack of press releases? I am sure that if Melissa or someone else knew that they did not get concert press releases we would get that taken care of! We can all help!

I am confident Central Wisconsin will be better served in the near future.

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

Well, I did not say I BET.

It is a small market city, four radio stations that would support the gig.

None of them have gotten the package.

Radio stations, in most markets, have a system for taking in packages, to keep record of it, for accountability and transparancy.

The Wausau radio stations have not gotten packages.

It is a small market city, we all know each other.

Its not my job as a writer or a fan to do the advance work for any artist.  I went above and beyond for my article, way beyond what I did for say BB King or Aretha Franklin.

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

Dino,

I am sorry your area did not receive the info to help promote the show. I am not saying that you wrote with the "I bet" voice. It is a trap many writers get themselves into.

Everyone of us appreciates the fact that you went "above and beyond" for your article. Do you have the same relationship with BB King and Aretha Franklin that you have with Joe? Are you on their forum, meet them after a show? Going above and beyond also generates a good artice, beyond the same old facts that are out there in everyone elses articles. It also makes you stand out as a writier and assures that you will get published in the future, which is something that you desire, correct?

With as many dates as Joe plays, it would be impossible for every radio station and media outlet to be contacted regarding every show. Like Jim said, some of that needs to be done by the promoter. Our Street Team should be helping as well.

No one is perfect.

Friends? smile

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

Hey Dino,
First of all I ll say I really liked the article you wrote about me. I like the perspective and how you took a different approach than many.   I also appreciate your support that you have given me over the years.  I also know you personally and have hung out and chatted about everything music.  Generally the way it works. My staff is contacted by the promoter or William Morris saying they need promo materials. IE Posters CD's Bio's..  That stuff gets sent out of the William Morris office in Beverly Hills to the venue or promoter.  We also double back and send stuff to the Radio Stations on our own.  Do some T's and I's dont get dotted and crossed? Yes absolutely.  Did we also have 60 plus shows this fall plus a tour of Europe coming up in early 08 plus a record release ect..Yes.  In Wausau's case I dont know what the PAC has done or feels it needs to do to sell the place.  I know the ticket sales are around 700ish so far.  Some times the venues let shows ride if they see steady sales and dont even send out the stuff we give them.  I end up 9 times out of 10 signing the stuff for Charity auctions.  Its not about being a smaller market.  Its about letting the PAC, theater, promoter do their thing.  Our phones are always on in Florida and if they needed something it would have been easy to remedy.  Anyway thats my two cents...
By the way I was not Familiar with Corey Harris's album of World Blues.  We are going to try to go about it a bit differently but I will check that out.   I learn something new everyday.

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

This has to be one of the deeper threads to come across the forum that I've read to date. First off, Dino you are truly a critical journalist. I found your article intriguing in the fact that it went beyond the usual fluff that some writer plagerized from Joe's bio or a promo release. Joe, I understand your comment about not crossing all the T's and dottin' all the I's. When you came through SF recently I think a little more coordination might have sold out the Palace of Fine Arts show. KFOG had the day of the show wrong in their promo's and the FYE in store appearance was a complete bust. This is where the street teamers need to step up and help spread the word especially in the urban areas when there are sometimes multiple shows in a general area. All you have to do to help is contact Melissa and she'll tell you how as well as hook you up with people in your area that can help you. Some day in the future there may be more money to promo the living daylights out of Joe's tours, but for the time being it's still a group effort. Thanks to those who helped out in the Bay Area in Aug./Sept. Can't wait to do it again!

Re: Upcoming show in Wausau article by Dino

Someone asked if I have the same relationship with BB or Aretha, I actually think I have a closer relationship with BB than I do with Joe.  If I have to define one of them.  I have spent time with BB and his children at his home, and the like.  My time with Aretha was terrifying, because musically no one is on a higher pedestal.

As far as that goes, regardless of my friendship with a musician, or a friend who happens to be a musician, my editor knows about those relationships in advance.  So she knew that I knew Joe as a guy before I was a writer, and trusted me to write what I thought anyway.  But to ensure objectivity I am not allowed to write about my friend Scott, or my friend Henry.  (And she cut out my Clapton story from the Joe article)

As far as my thinking that off markets are not being served, I think that is more a comment on how much Joe actually has to do.  He is represented by WMA, and they also represent people like Harrison Ford...so Joes weekly operation, while significant, does not roll in as much money as other divisions.  I think Zach is his primary agent, and Zach assistants all do a wonderful Joe, but WMA is a giant house, and it must be easy to miss things.  As a result, Joe has to spend giant amounts of time on his iphone, and blackberry going over each market, and as a result does not eat enough vegetables or drink enough orange juice to prevent colds.  I am assuming that Joe's time on the bus is spent online, and on the phone to a giant extent doing radio, ensuring all the things are there at the venue, maintaining guitars, and the like.  I believe that some of this should be alleviated by tour and road management (two entirely separate things).  I think that Joe is at this amazing middle point, and I think it is a breaking point for many, where the investment in his from outside sources has been signficant, but not enough to add staff, and as a result he carries that weight almost entirely himself.  Like 99% of the nationally touring rock bands in this country, Joe is moving 60 to 80,000 units a year, profiting little from sales, but that profit being used to fund the touring which inevitably pays for his life.

I think looking at Bonamassa's career as a whole, in side by side use of the record industry we can see some amazing thing.  Young man signed EARLY, way too early some might say, financial investment on the part of the record label, and clearly not recouped.  But from that springs the beginnings of the work with Roy who has invested literally his DNA in this project for over a decade, and brought Joe to right here.  Along the way as the record industry has fallen, you have seen Joe invest in the infrastructure of his orginization, managing his own masters, his own ASCAP and BMI accounts, and running the touring band like a machine.

Along the way a few giant studio gigs are there to pay for things that might happen to be great payoffs later on.  The Ozzy thing directly links Joe to the guitar crowd, and puts his name on Ozzy dorks lips (I am such a dork).  It allows metal kids to purchase Joe record from the past and be blown away by the sheer massive amounts of talent there is in him.

Around this time a choice was made not to seek a liscensing or full blown record deal, as profit margin keeps higher when released indie.  It allows for greater control, and allows Joe to maintain ownership of his property.  Decisions like this mean that expenses are in house expenses, and as a result records like Sloe Gin are a tremendous leap of faith.  It is a produced, slick studio record, with all the bells and whistles.  As a result far more expensive than say a Tommy Castro or Popa Chubby, who have sold similar soundscan numbers for record labels famous for low payouts.

I think it will be interesting in the next two years to see the road that Bonamassa takes.  Like I said in the article, all the guitar shop guys know him.  The amount of guitar wanker wanna be's is amazing now.  It is  amazing to see the amount of kids who openly say that tehy want to be as good as Joe one day.  I think that the decision made by KWS, and the flat out punishment he took businesswise is something that is interesting to see as you watch Bonamassa's career trajectory.

I think as we see the dissolution of Los Angeles record business infrastructure, and the domination of the indie by the truly indie, I think Bonamassa is positioned for a giant career that runs forever and a day.  I do not question either the talent or the orginization, but I think that it is important to be able for me as a writer, and a music dork, to be able to see it objectively.  I try to refer to Joe when I am being fan boy, and Bonamassa when I am trying to be objective.

I would be fascinated by a live documentary of the tour.  A true behind the scenes look at the whole thing.  A life of Joe and the band type of deal.  I am willing to be a giant amount of it would be Joe on the phone advancing his shows, or worrying about expenses.  For example, that cool moment when Joe gets off the plane in India for the first time, and how the upstate new york guy handles that sort of heat for the first time, I bet that moment would be cool.

Watching Joe eat road food, and trying to maintain his health, while eating weird scandanavian food.

a movie, similar to the one about Rocoo DeLuca and his tour of Europe.  Or "Dreaming in America" about the band Lucero.

Either way, I think that Sloe Gin was a guantlet being thrown down.  Given the talent of Bonamassa, I want to see it thrown even further.  I think it will be fascinating to see where it goes.

I think for you fans, this is the moment.  Ten years from now, you can say you were here when Joe changed, where Joe stopped being "The Kid" and became "The writer, the artist".

As as my writing, I had approached Susan about pretty much the exact article you talked about.  About Roy and Joes life in Cali, and the like.  How did Joe and Roy meet?  What does Joe do with his free time?  Rock climbing, swimming with Hammerhead shark, a golf addict?  Doe he like to cook, or run marathons?  I heard he was involved with a folk singer, is that true?  Does Joe have a dog?  A best friend?  Has Joe ever slept in a tent?  Is Joe political?  What kind of car does Joe own?  Who did he take to prom?  Why those sunglasses?  If Joe could be a movie star, which one would he be?

Does Joe think this blues thing is going to fall away, and he will stand on his own, like his appearances with bands like Steely dan and the like overseas...it does not matter if he is called a blues guy here?

What inspires Joe onstage to do the things he does?  Does he have a mental routine that gets him to be in the place needed to be onstage?

When was the last night of drunken confessions did Joe have?  The last wrestling match with someone in his band?  Who hold the World Title of on the Bus wrestling?

Does Joe like Pizza?

Being in LA, does Joe like the Lakers or the Clippers?

Does the bus change from tour to tour?  What does Joe like in his bus?

Xbox or playstation?

What was the worst night on stage in 2007?  What made it bad?  What was the funniest thing in the crowd in 2007?  What was the funniest thing the band managed to do on stage?

I once saw Joe Walsh leave the stage to go toe the bathroom, ever happen to Joe?

Who is number 1 on the speed dial?

Does Joe have a lawn?  A pool? Neighbors?  A poster of Freddie Mercury on the wall?

Does Joe have a postion in the Sammy versus David Lee Roth argument?

Does Joe fear spiders?  I do.  SPiders are tough.

I do not think Joe is a robot, and while I think the writing about Joe has been pretty one sided so far, I think it is time for someone to take some time and really spend time with the guy.  Actual time.  Watch him play tennis with his parents, and cards with his granny and grand dad.  As a writer, a music dork, the records and the live show are givens...I know they will be excellent.  But I want to know Joe.
