Topic: Joe talks about his relationship with PBS

I know there have been discussions about the PBS airings of Joe's releases and much discussion about the edits.
Now we know how it started and who does the editing decision.

Very well said.... Since PBS is a local channel, I believe in all markets, he probably gets more viewers than his MTV Music shows get. I know I look forward to each release on PBS and it caused me to buy both RAH and Tour De Force. It was also nice to hear about RAH, I didn't know they did it all themselves.

PBS is where we first found out about Joe. We had been living in a bubble and just happened upon him one night while flicking through channels. To say our lives changed at that moment is an understatement. An entire world of music opened up to us by first turning us on to Joe and then also discovering so many other fantastic musicians because of this forum. Thank you PBS and thank you Joe.

We were struck by Joe on PBS also, but not until Beacon Theater came out...just flicking channels and there he was...stopped to listen a second or two and it turned into me screaming at my wife that I had to see this guy...I had given up on music in the early 80's due to kids, family and the crap that was being played on the radio, I just gave up....Joe brought me back to music and he brought me back strong...I owe him a debt that I can never repay...

Like so many of us here in Bonamassaville, my first exposure to Joe's music was via PBS also. Got home late on a Saturday night from coaching my students at a speech contest in Omaha in December 2010, too tired to go to sleep right away (if that makes sense), started channel surfing and hit the Iowa PBS affiliate just as they were starting the Royal Albert Hall excerpts as part of their annual fundraiser.

I sort of knew Joe's name from the guitar magazines, but hadn't gotten around to checking him out yet (I had only started reading those magazines again a few months before, when I returned to guitar as a hobby after a 25-year hiatus). To say that I was blown away by what I saw that night would be a huge understatement, and I owe PBS a debt of gratitude. Their continuing efforts on his behalf are commendable, and I'm glad Joe's music is such a good fundraiser for a worthy cause!

I have a kind of a love/hate relationship with PBS and pretty much always have. I knew about Joe, SRV, Mayer before PBS but sometimes their edits have the opposite effect of what they want to portray. For example Mayer had his 'Room for Squares' CD going and may have even had his next cd out when PBS aired the DVD 'Any Given Thursday' and they cut out entirely the part where he plays his strat!?!! I was bored. When I finally heard how good he is on the electric guitar, probably through his old web site, I was blown away and bought the DVD immediately. I still never listen to the acoustic part.

Oddly enough John Mayer used to have a blog many years ago and it was he who mentioned Joe. I was floored when I heard him and bought the live CD New Day Yesterday since it was the only one the store had, and pretty much everything else after that. Talked him up all over the place locally and always got the "Joe who?" response. Not any more smile

Back in the days when PBS showed SRV, Doyle Bramhall II and the like, it was the thing to watch. Now I find it is littered with three chord bands still in their 'Nirvana' pigenhole but trying to stand out.

I will still watch when Joe is scheduled to play on PBS but at least now they pronounce his name properly instead of the former 'Joe Bone-a-massa...
