I suppose there was some kind of 'natural justice' to it all. The Pantomine Diva is crocked in the 8th minute and forced to retire after 25 and then his erstwhile undersung colleagues go on and win the bloody thing. Couldn't make it up really.
Well done Portugal. Tactical victory, with some excellent goalkeeping and team discipline thrown in. The goal was stunning as could have been the free kick a minute earlier.
France will and should be kicking themselves. Taking the foot off the gas as they did. I thought Giroud was substituted too soon, as was Payet, although he cannot thrive in this shackled left side role anyway. Pogba was too deep and even with Sissouko's sterling efforts the Franch failed to impose themselves on a Portugal team which had been prematurely deprived of its principal player.
I'm no great CR7 fan, although respect his indisputable talent. Portugal have been finally rewarded for their team ethic, indomitable spirit, for getting there and 'being there' and also because a reward is also long overdue them.
I am surprised, but then there have been a few in this EC. It hasn't been a classic competition by any means but that won't matter to Portugal. Well done!
