Topic: How to describe Hidden Charms to a jam band..???

Hi.

So I am truly rubbish at describing songs to the house band at jam nights...so how would you go about describing Hidden Charms as simply as possible??

Cheers

Not sure the YouTube idea would work in the middle of a noisy pub when they're after slick change-overs between acts...

Hidden Charms is an eight bar blues in E.  The difficulty with describing eight bar blues is that the form is highly variable unlike the 12 bar form.  In this particular case the form is the one cord for three bars, the 5 quart for one bar, the one cord  for one bar, the four cord for one bar, the one cord for two beats, the five chord for two beats, and the one cord for one bar.

At least that's how I saw it.

Good luck.

Thanks, how about describing the rhythm?

Re: How to describe Hidden Charms to a jam band..???

I hear it as straight time and midtempo.

The guitar riff begins on the and of one, and ends on beat three.  The vocal pick up begins on the and of three.

It's difficult to sort out because on the video Anton Figg is emphasizing the upbeats.  That's why when Joe first starts singing the whole rhythm seems off (but in a good way).

I certainly wouldn't worry about the drumming at a blues jam. Just have the drummer kick off the one, and come right in with the riff (I presume it'll be you and that telecaster), on the upbeat.

By the way I'm not 100%  sure regarding the last two measures, but that's what I hear. It feels like it needs to go to the five chord in the second half of bar seven, although it's probably just the bass since the guitar riff doesn't end until the downbeat of three.

Also, I know for a fact that there are much much better musicians on this forum than me. So if they chime in, by all means I yield.

Cheers

Thanks.

Sometimes the Tele, sometimes the Lester....like this song on both - each leads to me playing the song that bit differently.

Just trying to mix it up a bit at jam nights where you get the same old standards time after time after time - of which I am just as guilty.

Re: How to describe Hidden Charms to a jam band..???

I'm a hack musician and jam master at our local blues society jam. We have host band that can hang with anybody but the few odd jammers get lost in anything even as simple as a 12 bar blues with a quick IV. The cool thing about Hidden Charms is you only go to the V and IV during the versus and then there is a stop but you can stay in the I for the intro as long as you want and during the solo. Just cue the band on the changes and the stop. If they can't follow that you are SOL. Find a better jam.
