Topic: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Joe is going to be playing at Stevie Ray Vaughan's remembrance show Oct 7 in Dallas, along with Johnny Winter and others...i was thinking, hmmm, surely Joe is going to do something of Stevie's...wonder what it's gonna be?  I think my vote would be Texas Flood...what about you?  Man, if he did Texas Flood I think the crowd would just go nuts?!!

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Yeah, Joe could really do Texas Flood justice!  I'd like to hear him do "The Sky is Crying" too (George Thorogood also does an excellent, but little bit different Sky is Crying and, of course, Elmore James started it).

my two cents i s i dont know what itd be, but id rather see he cover an srv original than a cover of a cover.  that is going to be cool, hopefully it gets video taped

I bet he could do a nice version of Lenny, maybe soft - then some fire thrown in!

It isn't a SRV tribute show like the recent Hendrix tribute. The bands don't really play Stevie songs in their sets.
At least not in past  Remeberance Rides I have attended. It is a fund raiser for Stevie's moms charity.

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

I'm sure whatever Joe plays will pack a punch, impress the heck out of everyone listening, and will leave them wanting more!  An excellent formula!  Because Joe is such an awesome in-person performer, he could videotape all of his shows and sell DVDs till the cows come home.  We buy two of each; one for me and one for my husband.  Last year we bought Live at Rock Palast for our kids and Joe personally signed them to the kids (they were Christmas gifts which were much enjoyed).   :-)

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Yeah, i figured Joe would do a normal Joe set, which is good for me...but I would be surprised if he didn't throw in a little SRV, I've heard him blow through so many snippets of others like ZZ, Yes, Frampton, etc...so, I figured we'd at least hear a little something from SRV in his set.  Maybe just wishful thinking.  Whatever he does, I'll be a happy camper.

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

amazing show....the band's sound is so polished and joe's playing is so fluid that it was breath taking to say the least....and i've seen joe about a dozen times.....the palladium was nice, with great sound, great security (hello HOB), and good food....some awesome people were out and about, with alan haynes and wes jeans really putting on impressive shows....the whole event was a pleasure, but thanks goes to joe for making it truly spectacular

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

I was there as well, and my takeaway was that Joe showed up to play guitar-there were is usual songs to frame it up, but he was truely playing the guitar like I have newver seen him play.  A real treat - he did a few things that just blew the crowd away.  Great show!                DONR

Yeah, I echo that especially on "Just Got Paid" some really tasteful scale playing I have never seen him do before. Best version I have heard  to date.

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Just got in from Dallas. Very nice venue. Much better than Cowboys where it has been held in the past. I arrived about 4 pm and caught a little of Kayla Reeves with Alan Haynes. I had heard of her before very talented young lady. Was starving so we grabbed a bite and the bar and grill located at the venue so we missed Wes Jeans. Finished up in time to take a position fiften feet from the stage in front of Joe B. with my son Colin his bandmate Justin and his girlfriend Glenda. It was Justin and Glenda's first Joe show probably first blues show as well.

From the first note it was clear Joe had the take no prisoners attitude. He had the A+ game on. Blazed through the electric set no acoustic and no Strat. Kind of odd at a SRV event Joe played the G guitars only Gigliotti and Gibsons. It was a nice change of pace for the crowd I'm sure. They were eating it up. He had the whole rooms attention for sure. Very vocal appreciative crowd. Yelled JOE JOE for more. No luck they were on a tight schedule.

Jim Suhler came out and sat in for Another Kind of Love which after giving solos to Rick, and Jim Joe closed out the song and went into an extended jam outro trading licks with Jim. Joe was burning it up in some of the most amazing riffs that Jim had trouble keeping his jaw off the floor as he was replying with his own. Jim is the coolest guy and it is always good to get to see him.

60 minutes of in your face blues rock with one of the best versions I've heard of So Many Roads. Absolutley the most powerfull slow blues song done that day I'm sure.

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Man Jim, Joe and Jim Suhler playing together on "Another Kind of Love"....that's what I've missed live from the new songs, that 2nd guitar!!!..what a treat! I really thought about taking a trip for this show but it was a root canal instead..oh goody....Glad he's still tearing it up....Cathy

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

We got there around 6:15, caught just a little of Wes Jeans (smokin, put him on your list of must sees), went to the bar and get our dinner before the band went on. Aaron, Dave, and Jay were working at warp speed to get things just right without a sound check, and I gotta say, it sounded incredible! The best audience appreciation for "mountain time" Ive seen in the last 7 shows yet, and you should have seen the light reflecting off the Gigliotti, I literally had to put on my sunglasses, i was blinded!! Joe had the crowd eating out of his hand, I just missed grabbing one of the pics Joe fired into the audience, the lady next to me was smiling like she won the lottery!! Great job by everyone in the band to pull this off. A short break and Johnny Winter came out, I seen him 30 years ago, but dont remember any of the show, so i was really looking forward to it. I will sraight up tell ya the mix was horrible!, we couldnt hear any of the vocals, and it was so bassy that our rear ends were vibrating on our chairs. Deb and I moved to 3 different locatons, and it was the same! We stayed about 30 minutes and left, I cant tell you how dissapointed I was, pissed is probably a better word. Oh by the way, if you get the chance to see Johnny soon, you might want to make sure you get a ticket anyways, the man looks very frail, so you never know.

We came out to see my youngest sister hear in Dallas, and having a ball, better get off her computer before she kicks me otta her house!!!

Shred

P.S.....almost forgot, I got a quick word with Jim Moody at Cains and here, nice to meet ya Jim, and thanks for not banning yet...lol

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Shred,
Nice to meet you and glad you weren't dissapointed after traveling so far. Sorry we didn't get a chance to talk. I just wanted to tell you that I appreciated you making the effort to come to this show and being apart of the very appreciatetive crowd. Same to Photogal and Patty and all the other forum visitors and contributors.  The show was a success. SRO. I heard about the scuffle that is a first for me. I told Cain's that security is never a problem at Joe's shows that everybody is there to see the show and have a good time. When people rushed the stage for the encore I guess somebodies toe got stepped on.

So I have been branded the ban man? Just doing my job. If a few an inocent bystanders happens to fall victim to an aggressive use of the ban button I must appologize. If that fate ever befalls you, there is an appeals process in place now. Don't worry Shred I'm sure my inbox would be deluged with pleas for mercy on your behalf.

Thought I'd add a little info if case anyone wants to drive into downtown Dallas, and have never been there. Your going to need 3 essential items on your automoblie:

1) Navigational system
2) horsepower, at least 350
3) sports car handling

Why?? you ask, well go there and find out for yourself. That place is a cluster ****!, well you know what I meen. I'm driving this 6 cyl. Mustang and my wife is giving me directions. All of a sudden you come around a curve on the freeway and you have 6 different exits, and none of them very clear. I had the "stang" fishtailing twice. It took awhile to get to the SRV gig, and I needed a beer BAD! just to mellow out. I'd have to put those freeway signs in Dallas, as the WORST!!! I've ever seen, and Ive drove in a few large cities. But hey, the peeps were really cool out there, I'll give them 5 stars! for hospitality.

Re: Joe at SRV Remembrance Gig in Dallas Oct 7

Shred - that's funny you should mention the freeways - when I was calling around for hotels
one of the operators told me the same thing - he couldn't wait to get out of Dallas/FW and
never wanted to go back it was so confusing.  It's too bad no one could use the tickets I
sent you, but thanks for trying.
