Topic: What songs will stand the test of time?

A couple months ago in a thread on this forum, I put forth a theory that the Blues/Rock music of the late '60's to present is so good that it will be taught and enjoyed for hundreds of years to come, similar to how Motzart and Beethoven and others  from the 18th century, have been enjoyed some 200+ years later.  To substantiate my argument, I offer the following:  During the Winter Olympics of this year, there was a commercial, geared for a young age group.  It featured Rap, Country, Pop music but at the high point of the commercial it was Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze".  Another commercial for a perfume, ran about the same time.  It featured Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love".  These songs are at least 45 years old and are being used to influence a young demographic. Do you Agree/Disagree with my premise?  What songs do you think might be around in 200 years?  I'll let some of you that have been Joe fans much longer than I, come up with his songs.  I can think of 30-40 off the top of my head that I think might.  As for other Artists I would choose, Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone".  I asked my wife and her pick was Carlos Santana's "Europa".  What say you?

The only thing we deserve, is an opportunity.  Everything else has to be earned.

Number Of The Beast/Run To The Hills By Iron Maiden

Re: What songs will stand the test of time?

Good topic bobkatmsu!
As far as Joe songs a lot of them are covers although sometimes an artist redefines the cover and becomes known for the song.
As far as Joe songs go the obvious pick would be Mountain Time. But there are so many songs.Sloe Gin(cover),Ballad of John Henry,Driving Twards the Daylight,Slow Train,Dust Bowl and  more.
It will be interesting to see how long the classic rock songs will be used in advertising.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Probably the greatest rock song ever for me.  And I'm not a big Floyd fan.  It's just that good.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Re: What songs will stand the test of time?

Very cool topic here! I think all these listed will/have stood the test of time already. I'll throw in:

Layla-Eric Clapton
Sweet Home Alabama-Lynard Skynard
Ozzy-Crazy Train

All of these songs I hear all the time on the radio and seem to never lose popularity. As for Joe's music I can definitely say

Ballad of John Henry
Sloe Gin
Slow Train
etc...I could really go on and on for him, but I think i'm a little biased smile

Re: What songs will stand the test of time?

I would throw in some Stones songs.
Satisfaction,Jumpin Jack Flash,Can't Always Get What You Want,Brown Sugar,Miss You.Angie.

Re: What songs will stand the test of time?

Interesting topic. The music industry has changed completely since I was a kid. The days of hits as big as there were in the sixties and seventies are gone in my opinion, for several reasons. The biggest reason would be the total volume of music being made available to the listening public. The old record industry system insured that they controlled what was played on the radio, and therefore, what had a chance to become a hit. When the Beatles first went on the Ed Sullivan show more people saw them than the number of people who watched  the 2014 super bowl, because  back then most people had only two or three channels to choose from. Everyone was exposed to their music, whether they were fans or not. In contrast, there are countless present day pop "stars" that I've never even heard of. Part of standing the test of time is wide spread exposure.

Just a few to add to the list:

Time - Pink Floyd
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
White Room - Eric Clapton
Help - The Beatles
Jessica - Allman Brothers
Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum

For Joe's music

John Henry
Sloe Gin
Happier Times
Stop

There are many many more....

And lets give a cheer for this!

You have more avenues to get music now, but radio programmers still control what gets played today.  They push the artists and songs they want to be hits and refuse to play anything that is not on there program list.  So I don't really see that as a change that made songs bigger hits from yesteryear to today hits.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

Re: What songs will stand the test of time?

As much as I love Joe's music, I believe none of his songs will become a classic like Purple Haze or Whole Lotta Love.
I just see this from an objective angle and the real classics, which also include many Robert Johnsons songs, have changed music in a way, they broke barriers and rules. Joe's music is great, but in my eyes to be fair, it's still not that mindblowing that it matches the classics.

"ANGEL" & "VOODOO CHILD"   JIMI HENDRIX

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Fair enough assessment.Like Joe says he has never had a hit.I do like his songwriting but does it match up to let's say the top 100 all time rock songs?Cant say at this point. That  being said, why is he my favorite? I think it is the sum of the whole package.Which would be the level of his playing, singing and songwriting.Joe does a lot of covers but makes them his own.Its also a different era and if Joes songs were all over the radio it might take on a different level of perceived greatness.
Back to the question of the thread is will Joes songs stand the test of time?I think they will with people who are fans of his or blues/rock music.Who knows how many artists may be doing Joe covers 15-20 years from now.Time will tell.

Re: What songs will stand the test of time?

Hmmm, hard topic.   While Joe has not had hits on the radio, many of his songs get much air time on You Tube, ITunes and Spotify.  For Joe I think that Mountain Time and Happier Times are timeless.

For others I would say that Gary Moore's Still Got the Blues
PInk Floyd= The entire album Dark Side of the Moon
Eric Clapton-Tears in  Heaven
