No surprise some people do not enjoy licorice.  No surprise some people do not like Joe Bonamassa (in whatever context).  No surprise some people do not like either!  It is also no surprise some people take umbruge and/or offense at social attitudes falsely (or factually) perceived as vitriolic.  Notice I did not specify social attitudes toward any opinion of anything, divisive or not.  Attitude is important.

We've had a go around about "cult status" here before and wore it out.  I still have an attitude of "who cares?!"

Joe's Slow Train is a passenger and freight line. It ain't "gas, grass, or ****, nobody rides for free," but there are engineers and conductors. And regulating agencies...the time to hop on bored all smarmy, is not the same as the time has come to hop on board with a bill of lading and a ticket long as one's right army...

There's way too much to fight for (or about even, I suppose) in the world than what we do or do not like.  Things like right and wrong.  The circle will not be broken.  Not here in Joe's House, either.

I'm zen about these guys now. I expect that level of nonsense associated with my hometown and surrounding areas.  I play for you all not for them.  But I am going to make sure from now on all concert reviewers from anywhere pay full price front row for a ticket. No more comps .... ;-)

I'm from Utica and have followed Joe since his guitar interrupted my backswing playing golf across the street from his home. That was a long time ago. I'm embarrassed at the treatment he gets at home. A Saranac Brewery concert a few years back drew only a couple hundred people. The forums on Topix are brutal. I don't get it. One of our friends heads up the Stanley Theater in Utica and would love to have Joe come. I wouldn't blame Joe if he never played Central New York again. Joe, you grew up and these idiots never did. You went world-wide to chase your passions and dreams while these people are still wishing Four Acres (a local gin mill) was open. I'm glad you play for the thousands and maybe millions of fans who appreciate you. You were awesome when I first heard you almost 22 years ago and you keep getting better. Good for you and keep chasing!

I was at that Saranac Brewery concert August 28, 2007, and there were more than 1/2 a thousand in attendance!  In contrast to "the treatment;" back-biting propaganda poorly portrayed with incredulous negatively (which please remember, is a very small-as in teeny-tiny, minority, with big mouths and little accomplishments of any significant historical value beyond the proverbial provincial playground); the treatment there was nothing short of a royal treatment.  The "new" band put on an incredible performance start to finish.  The crowd was engaged, rockin', and everywhere having a blast.  I've caught Joe repeatedly in the home territories and they are without a doubt the most gratifying experiences.  One thing is true about Syracuse, Utica, Albany, Saratoga Springs, Watertown, all those "other" New Yorks (i.e. smaller cities and towns and country), people are DIVERSE and there is ALWAYS something going on somewhere (especially in summer, especially in the winding down week before school starts after Labor Day!!!), from a church bake sale or volunteer fire dept. BBQ to a fair to an internationally renowned musical troupe and the affable leader publicly performing to a mini-throng of wildly giddy grown-UPs (and interns in tow) nearby.  The audience was royally treating  Joe, Carmine, Rick, & Bogie that night, too!!!!!!! cool  I may be wrong, but I have always thought some of the "little" crowd noise that actually made it to "Live From Nowhere In Particular" came from the Utica audience.  It was a great night.  For those who were there, there was no disrespect, just rampant joy and awe...simply put.  And finally, Bronx Jeer to those who think they can (continue to) stink up somebody besides themselves... mad Get outta here!!! wink

Agreed Rocket.  Gail & I was there as well.  It was an amazing show and I thought the decent sized crowd showed its appreciation.  Have I always felt that attendance at his shows should have been more?  DEAFinitely!  Joe's talent was obvious to me since I first caught him performing in 1989.  Unfortunately CNY media never properly supported him so most local people still had no idea what they were missing.  Their loss.  There are many of us here in CNY who appreciate his talent and continually spread the word.  Even the negative reviews spawn discussion and allow us fans to set the record straight.  Just gotta ignore the haters.  I wouldn't be surprised if Joe wrote off the Syrause area, but I hope he never does.


That would be cool to find out LFNIP featured a song from one of our local shows!

Rocket, sorry if I gave you the wrong impression about Joe's performance or the crowd's reaction that night. The crowd was very enthusiastic and of course Joe and the band were terrific. My point is that Utica doesn't turn out and support him very well. You would think a national recording artist and one that even back then was really starting to take off would draw more than he did. I mean come on 'local musician hitting it big' should have jammed the streets. Most of those people show up to get hammered every Thursday night in the summer and still do. There's nothing to do in Utica and it's getting worse instead of better. Back to Joe, I'm proud to say I'm a big fan and the Syracuse concert this month is the first one I've missed since the free Blues Fest in Syracuse when he, Kenny and Eric were debuting "A New Day Yesterday". I just don't get the attitude of my home town.

Don't worry about the reviewers. They write for papers that mean nothing. The fans in central New York are so cool that I will take the jealous beat down every time. It's not about the haters who prey on the kid from Campbell Ave it's about you all.  Bring on their best minds as writers I will take it all. Doesn't change the fact that I love my Mom and Dad .. Love the place I'm from and the fact I happen to be smarter and more successful than any of the writers from the Post Standard and New Times ever thought of being is a mere side  bar to the more prevailing issue of the fact I actually comp these morons a ticket!! What an embarrassment it was for the latest reviewer dude to attend my concert..?? I hope his credibility is still intact visa vie the wanna bees, USTA- bees or never-Beens  he hangs with. Stay home or pay full face value next time.  PS... All of this doesn't put a damper on the enthusiasm in the way that  upstate New York media take my money to advertise the show then send the goons to review it poorly. I hope the latest goon has fun at the Pitbull show. ( for he is a true connoisseur of the arts )    It's astounding how vitriolic they come off but with a furrowed brow then dig their heels in like they've ever traveled or have seen the world outside the confines of their little village.    Welcome to the greatest place to grow up and the worst. I hope they are proud of themselves for trying to discourage me. But not gonna happen. You gotta bring better than two cub reporters to try my resolve.

Nice retort, Joe. You have to have a thick skin in the music business, but I'm sure you've developed that over the years. The fans will always have the last word and they are the only ones who matter. History is littered with examples of dumb reviewers who are out of touch with the real world - Uriah Heep in the early 70s is just one example (Google what happened, if you don't know the story).

As someone who, in the past, has written reviews of live gigs (although oddly, none of Joe's shows) and have been to many hundreds of gigs over 45 years, I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about. Some wet behind the ears reviewers writing in the national press wouldn't know a shuffle from a 12 bar or an explorer from a firebird. The writers for the specialist mags (usually) know what they are talking about and appreciate the music from a fan's perspective.

While not entirely accurate, the following quote from the great and much underrated guitarist, Frank Zappa, makes me smile.

"Rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, in order to provide articles for people who can't read." smile

Keep on doing what you're doing, Joe. There'll be no flames on this forum!

Well, I do'nt know if you are well-read in the Scriptures, but I do hope so (" The Whale That Swallowed Jonah"). Remember: A prophet has no honour in his own country! It seems to be quite normal... Nevertheless and just for that very reason too regarding your own family roots keep on playing there where you're coming from, Joe B.
Just do your very best no matter what other reviewers write afterwards there or somewhere else...
