Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

Interested to read your comments about SILT, Jim - I bought it a few months back while trying to catch up with Joe's back catalogue and hated it! Thought it just sounded like any ten-a-penny fairly nothingy rock band. I've tried since then to get into it, as I know it is a favourite of a lot of people on here, but still no success. It really has pretty much been relegated to being the "drinks coaster". But now I don't feel so bad about the fact that I can't get on with it smile

I'm sure no one meant any malice - but I think the "I'd want to know the good with the bad" is a somewhat romanticized idea. We like to think we'd all be totally objective and that its all valuable knowledge... but in reality, its tearing down artwork because it doesn't suit your taste.

It would be one thing to say "this mix could have been better" or "I thought this song didn't fit with the other songs on the album" - but to just say "I don't like this, I skip it" doesn't accomplish anything. When She Dances is a good example - actually one of my favorites. Very different than alot of his other stuff, which I'm sure Joe knows and therefore expected there would be a mixed reaction. But should he never record a song like that again because some of his fans just want heavier stuff? What about the fans that do like it? Forget the fans - what about what it means to him? Its his artwork.

I say this coming from a songwriter perspective. I know as a songwriter some people will like it, some people wont, there's nothing you can do about that. Recently I had one of my songs reviewed - 23 people wrote glowing praise. 2 people tore it down. Guess which words resonate more with me? Yet I'm not going to rewrite it or change what I'm doing because of those two. Served no purpose except to reaffirm that oh yeah - some people just don't like it. Oh well.

Its one thing to say "I'm open to criticism" - its another to pour your heart and soul into a song and then have people reject it. Like I said, if you don't have something nice to say...

My $.02 (clearly thats more than $.02 worth, but I haven't factored inflation).

I discovered Joe after his first solo album was out for about a year. The second time I saw him he played a couple from his yet to be released record SILT. I still wanted to see the ANDY set list but no big deal he did a couple from the new album. It was released later that year and I'm not sure if you know the album but it was a major reinventing of Joe's sound and image.

I hated it. I was pretty vocal on his old forum as were others. Before I knew him well enough to say it to his face. Turns out he hated it too. It was an attempt to go more mainstream rock. I think the feedback helped him decide he had taken a wrong turn although in his heart he knew. He even today refers to that record as the drink coaster. Now I later grew to love that album and it is one of my favorites it was just such a drastic change of direction for me to follow at that time along with many others who liked him just the way he was as a Blues Rocker. He released Blues Deluxe soon after and it was like So It's Like That Was over. Still there were three songs that stay with him today from it. Pain and Sorrow with an entire appreciation thread devoted to it. Mountain Time with his epic live version and the acoustic rendition that is similar to the album version and the title song that is one of his best original blues songs.

One of the good things he says about being so prolific as a recording artist if you put one out that some fans may not like you get another chance with them next year. He did that with me again with Black Rock which followed TBOJH which was a tough record to follow. There are some great songs on Black Rock and I love them performed live just didn't much care for the studio versions. That doesn't mean I'm not a super fan it just means I give my honest opinion. He likes honest opinions as long as they aren't personal and he values it more from someone or somebody he respects their opinion of. If this was a hateful thread I would be the first to nix it. He however can separate the wheat from the shaft, here he knows most of the players pretty well.

I know A LOT of you are fans of When She Dances but I'll never understand why that tune is plopped into the total awesomeness that is Had to Cry Today.  Unless I'm in the shower when it comes on, it's off!

That's the first song that popped into my head...I won't say I dislike it, but it's not on any of my playlists.

You know I actually like that song. HTCT is an eclectic mix of songs and it seemed like it would be a Father Bride dance song. You mean that wasn't yours? wink

My younger daughter and I danced to Asking Around for You.
My older daughter and I danced to Neil Young's "Here for You".

I'm not saying I don't like When She Dances, it's just down the list a ways.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

I love how the songs joe keeps in the setlist have evolved over time. Mountain Time is a great example of that...there are so many great progressions over the years. The song never changed at its core, but the little "tweaks" that Joe has made kept it fresh for the fans who have more than a few shows under their belt.
I agree with the RAH 1 version of Sloe Gin being almost impossible to improve upon. When a song has been in the setlist so long, it seems like changes are necessary...both for the fans and for Joe as an artist.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

Least favorite? Seriously?

Honestly there's not a song in Joe's catalog that I don't like. There might be couple that don't get played as frequent, but that doesn't mean I dislike those songs.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

I like reading about others favorites or least favorites.  Now I love When She Dances.  Just breaks my heart with the sweetness of it.  But I really only like Sloe Gin live.  Funny how different we all are but how we all see Joe's beauty  and giftedness.    I think this forum is a great way for Joe to kind of get the pulse of his audience.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

I feel I may get strung up for what I'm going to say. One has to keep in mind it is purely a personal taste kind of thing, but "Asking Around For You" has never really done it for me. I'll probably be labeled as cold-hearted, but I just find it a little too overly sentimental. I know it supposedly brings tears to people's eyes, but I have never gotten that kind of feeling, and I generally skip over it. Maybe if I had heard it live for myself it would be different, who knows. And as far as "Sloe Gin" goes, I have liked all the versions Joe has done and probably the acoustic one from Vienna is my favorite, but I have to admit I'm ready for Joe to do something else. I know this is probably heresy to state since any time Joe has left it out of the setlist people come after him with pitchforks and burning torches. The truly amazing thing to me is that Joe can still be so passionate playing it even after he has done it like thousands of times. But just letting you know, Joe, if and when you do decide you are tired of playing it, I certainly won't give you crap if you leave it off the setlist wink

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

"least liked" would seem to be every bit as subjective as "most liked". There are some songs that are further down the list, but still they are 50% better than 80% of the crap some other artists have put out. Sorry, just had to use a Yogi Berra'esque comparison to make a point. smile

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

Don't care for "Ain't no love on the streets" does not seem like a Joe song at all. The fact that he picked such an obscure Tim Curry song to cover makes me curious. Obviously his cover of Tim Curry's Slow Gin is his bread winner...just don't get "Ain't no love on the streets".

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

I have to admit I didn't care for Dislocated Boy but when I heard the accoustic version I loved it. Go figure!

I also have to admit I"m not a jazz/fusion fan so I"m not wild about the Rock Party stuff, but that's just me. I don't "get" things that are not melodic. Not saying it's bad......I really don't think anything of Joe's could be bad, maybe just not as good as some others.

That being said, the Iriduim is across the street from where I work and if I knew his little band were playing there, I"d be there in a heartbeat. The guy is a genius ......period. His music has really enriched my life and I will always be grateful for that.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

Couple of thoughts come to mind here.

1) It's art. Not every piece, by every artist, is liked by all.
2) What Pattyluvsjoe said.
3) I wasn't a fan of "Happier Times" until I saw the live version from The Borderline. That version ABSOLUTELY SMOKES.
4) Back to the topic...."Bird On A Wire".

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

I have just discovered Joe. I have been listening to Joe's cd's in chronological order for the past couple of weeks.

it gives you such a great since of where he has been and where he is going....absolutely been a joy in listening to these cd's this way.

I got to tell you.....I love them all...Really do.

One thing that I can tell is that he put a lot of time and hard work into his vocals, and in my opinion he has come along way from his early days.  Kudos to you Mr. Bonamassa, for all of your hard work.

You have become my favorite artist in a very short period of time....I did not think this could ever be the case, when I discovered you.....but it truly is, and I am getting so much enjoyment from your music, I can not even put it into words.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

It's not really any different than "favorite" - some folks favorite songs/albums are my least favorite, and some of the least favorites mentioned here are my favorites.  It just shows Joe's range.. whatever speaks to you is cool.  Can't reach everyone with every song, and I'm sure Joe has his own "least favorites."

My pick is probably Somewhere Trouble Don't Go.

Re: Least Favorite Joe Songs?

I have all of Joe's CDs and DVDs.  I can tell my list of least favorites because when I first ripped the CDs to add to my MP3 library I typically left behind 1 or 2 per CD.  Most of those were Chicago style blues tunes, with horns & such.  I know a lot of people like that stuff, but to me if it sounds like a song that Belushi & Aykroyd did with the Blues Brothers, it hit the ripping room floor.

So just to pick one, I'll say "You Better Watch Yourself" off of Dust Bowl.  And in the same vein, the Shepherds Bush Empire DVD from the Tour de Force set is my least favorite of the four for the same reason, although most of it is excellent - as all of Joe's stuff generally is.  After all, the goal of this thread is to get nitpicky with an incredible catalog of material to choose from.

Stand by for some big disappointment. Joe considers a band with horns his favorite. I bet there is plenty on the new release.
