Right, it's time to 'fess up and admit you're a wuss. Which are the songs that make you choke up, pretend you've got something in your eye or suddenly develop a cold?
I must admit when I see Joe play Mountain Time live or Joe & Beth play I'd Rather Go Blind live I have a tendency to go all pathetic and teary. So come on, don't leave me out here all on my own - man up and admit to being wusses!
Well, I've never felt like that listening to music, but one that sures gets me every time is Asking Around For You, specially the Royal Albert Hall version, with Joe's "Thank you for the greatest night of my life" line in the end. That was something!
Only one song, one specific version...and only on the DVD.
When Django begins and Joe first walks on stage at Royal Albert Hall, i always feel a strong mix of emotions. It's not really choking up, but it IS a lump in the throat moment. It's odd that there was no lump in the throat when I witnessed it live, only exhilaration.
The lump came unexpectedly the first time I watched the DVD.
I think it's knowing what a huge moment this was for Joe, the flood of memories from the trip itself, and knowing how fortunate I was to witness it live.
I recall a certain memory of getting emotional listening to one of Joe's songs. I was driving back home to Chicago from St. Louis which is about a 4 hour or so drive and popped in Live from Nowhere in Particular for my long trek home. I always skipped over Asking Around for You but this one particular time I decided to listen to the whole cd straight through. When I got to Asking Around for You the tears started rolling.
It was honestly the first time I had listened to the song fully without any distractions and it was amazing. I will never forget that moment
Well, the most emotional Joe songs are on the DVD from the Royal Albert Hall I:
- Appearing on the stage with Django (made me a fan for a lifetime),
- Happier Days,
- The Great Flood,
- Asking Around For You
and
- When Heartaches Were Nickels.
They all go deeply to my heart and soul...
Mountain Time always gets me. When my wife and I were first married, I was in Florida working while she finished her last year at Michigan State Univ. As I drove through the night to attend her graduation, I was so excited. Hence the Avitar. It was not west on 80, it was north on 75. 30+ years later we are going just as strong.
For me I think it has to be "Sloe Gin" on the Vienna CD. The way Joe emphasizes the words 'lonely' and 'die' get me every time.
It's mainly because of some stuff in my life but also because that version was playing in the background while I was writing an important chapter in the book I'm working on.

I am right with you on this one Bill. I will never forget looking over into the wing of RAH and seeing Joe getting ready to come on stage. It was one of the most magical and proudest moments when he came out on the stage and looked around with the "WOW, This is really happening " look. Best concert memories forever.... plj ~

It would have to be "Slow Gin" for me...Although..."Asking Around for You" has special meaning as well..

There have many occasions and it has been more than one song that might give me a lump in my throat. This is the first time and the first song. The Road is my Home
https://soundcloud.com/jim-moody-1/the-road-is-my-home Many people have this recording from the live in Studio 7 Session broadcast live and it was just another moment reaffirming my feeling that Joe was destined for stardom. He totally blew the roof off the place for the entire 3 hour show then brought us down easy with this one I got chocked up with emotion because of the excitement of being there and knowing the show was coming to a conclusion and he did it with such class and ease as he was asked to play one more.
He has touched that nerve on many occasions since and yes Tap an Angel has been another song specifically the day in May 2007 of the show in OKC at the Stage Center when I got the news a close friend had died during sound check and I held the tears back till Joe ended with that song later that night dedicating it to Howard. In fact I'm tearing up now thinking about it.
That is why Joe is where he is because he can connect emotionally with his audience not just burn up the fret board.
Django at RAH for all the reasons above.

Hi Matirocker, good catch, you are right about Heartaches, not played at RAH, it was on the Beacon DVD bonus disk, among others. But India was played at RAH 1 as the introduction to Mountain Time.
I have to say that Joe and Beth's version of I'd Rather Go Blind at Hampton Court, with Beth sitting on the edge of the stage, made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck - a really special experience (no wussie tears, obviously, no, no, not me...).
My personal favourite 'moving' moment, however, is that big, wringing solo in the middle of So Many Roads - it's just one of those times that makes me reach for my air guitar, close my eyes and wish I could play like Joe...

Hi Matirocker, good catch, you are right about Heartaches, not played at RAH, it was on the Beacon DVD bonus disk, among others. But India was played at RAH 1 as the introduction to Mountain Time.
Exactly, but I used the word "and" and after that I began a new line. That meant for me that Heartaches didn´t belong to RAH 1. I love all those versions played by Joe. Only to explain my thoughts, not to start an academic discussion.
