Topic: Lyrics question

Just enjoying Joe's incredible, soulful version of The Great Flood on the Shepherds Bush TDF - that is one helluva DVD. Every time I hear this song I wonder what he means by the line "Well you said you might be receiving" - can anyone explain it and put me out of my misery? Or is it just something I have to interpret for myself??

Re: Lyrics question

..."with child" maybe, I don't know that for fact, but that is what always comes into my mind when I hear it.         plj

"I'm not nice to any guitar!"      lol

Re: Lyrics question

at one time i thought it was ""Well you said you might be receeding"  like the waters of a Flood Receeding as in stopping and pulling back on The Great Flood of tears and pain

but it is "Receiving" i'm sure and Patty's interperetation is nice  wink

ps ... Me and Patty were front centre at that show and for me that was The Song of The night
and in The top 3 songs of The Whole 4 shows, to me it is one of Joe's best performances live ever!

Re: Lyrics question

Wow High praise from Michael for our Joe.  Agree it is one of my favorites ever.   I thought it meant receiving love but who knows.  It is such a sad song

Re: Lyrics question

A funny thing about trying to understand lyrics...Jimmy Fallon does #wednesdays.  #misheardlyrics.  One week it was people tweeting about lyrics they or friends have been singing wrong forever!!! SO funny!!

Re: Lyrics question

Funny how many different interpretations there are of that line.
I always viewed it like the old southern hospitality...as in "she's not receiving visitors today" or she said she might be receiving (visitors)...but it was all a bunch of lies.

BTW, as great as this song was at SB, I prefer the RAH #1 version...which may be my favorite guitar solo that Joe has ever performed.

"Rock ON & Keep the Faith"

Re: Lyrics question

That's the beautiful thing about music and art....the interpretation that is felt by each of us, I think that's considered a sign of a great piece of work wink

I always took it as this as well.  Unless Joe tells us, we will never know for sure, but the other interpretations are interesting. Great Flood is one of my favorite songs. Would really love to see it done sometime. The solo is one of Joe's best in my opinion, the way it just builds and builds, just fantastic!

Re: Lyrics question

the following line may give a clue, "well i could tell it was all a bunch of lies"
as in not "Receiving" (Listening) to the love/words he thought she felt/heard

thats my take on this wonderful deep lyrical song by Joe

Re: Lyrics question

Joe was asked in an interview in 2009 if he had ever  played what he considered to be a perfect solo. He said that the solo he played on The Great Flood in Manchester (UK) on a recent tour had been the most perfect moment he had ever experienced on stage.

I don't know if he feels he has surpassed that moment in the intervening years, but clearly The Great Flood is one of those songs that brings out the best in him. I'd love to hear him play it again too.

Even fools say something worthwhile now and again

Re: Lyrics question

Thanks for all your interesting interpretations! And I'm most jealous of Michael and Patty for their front-row experience at Shepherd's Bush, I think this is one amazing concert.
The Great Flood is one of the top 3 songs that I would love to hear Joe play live - along with Blues Deluxe and So Many Roads. I haven't managed to catch any of them yet, but still hoping it will happen one day smile
