Topic: Beatles 50 yr anniv on CBS (Grammy Tribute)

Not being a Beatle fan at all, I respect their place in rock history. Many of my friends are Beatles fans and it's sort of a joke that I don't like them.

Last night I saw the program to tribute the Beatles 50 year anniversary of the Ed Sullivan show TV program. I really wanted to see the old show in its entirety before all the fluff and sunshine blowing. It only showed very little of the vintage footage. That sort of stunk. I wanted to experience that historic program that changed the nation and the music industry that everyone talks about so fondly. They did have many Grammy award winners performing Beatles songs... artists we will probably forget in 5 years.

One highlight of the night was Dave Grohl (drums), Joe Walsh (Eagles), and Gary Clark Jr. (Guitar) did a song.
The program had a house band, and I saw that the two guitar players looked familiar... it was Steve Luthaker and Peter Frampton.

I really like Paul McCartney, I like him most of the 4. After seeing that, I think I'd see him in concert. OR I can always hold out for a SirVana record (Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Pat Smear, and Krist Novaselic). cool

I didn't watch the anniversary show and forgot to record. I have seen McCartney with his current touring band and it is worth the price of admission. The band he has now he has toured with for over 10 years. He is smart enough to know that even though he has newer material and usually a new album out he doesn't force feed that to those that came. He plays the hits from Wings to the Beatles. My son says that it is the standard he holds concerts to this day since he saw him in the early 2000's

Hey Nic,

I thought the show was GREAT, but then, I am a big Beatles fan. I enjoyed current day musicians covering Beatle songs way more than I thought.

In addition to the highlights you mentioned, I thought John Mayer and Keith Urban were superb. (pretty awesome guitar playing-they make it look effortless)

I was wondering why Eric Clapton wasn't there.  He could have easily been in Joe Walsh's shoes, but Joe Walsh is married to Ringo's sister-in-law, so maybe that's why. Its not that I don't love Joe Walsh, I do.  I think I counted 3 of George's songs were played and its well known Clapton helped George in songwriting. I also felt a little bad about Julian Lennon not being there, although I've read he has a good relationship with Sean Lennon, maybe not so much with Yoko. Julian was just re-establishing a relationship with John when John was murdered.

I heard someone say....All the girls wanted them and all the boys wanted to be them! Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...that about sums it up! wink

I can clearly remember being glued to the TV that night watching Ed Sullivan, I had turned 7 three months earlier in November, 2 days before Kennedy was assassinated. As a kid, I remember how many adults openly wept over Kennedy. Looking back, IMO, our country was so patriotic back then, when the Beatles hit, it was just what the doctor ordered, their music lifted people's spirits.

I can't think of one other thing I remember from those early years, besides the Kennedy assassination & the Beatles. smile

I adored the Beatles, John in particular. Saw them at Shea twice but I completely forgot about last nite's show. I will have to check out you tube

It was weird that Eric Clapton was not there, and also that Norah Jones wasn't there (her father is Ravi Shankar)... two people who were extremely close to the Beatles.

I was thinking both of those artists would have done something. It would have made more sense to have Eric Clapton than Joe Walsh to perform. hmm

Nic, according to Angela above,
Joe Walsh is married to Ringo's sister-in-law...

the tribute was fantastic!  i loved it.

Re: Beatles 50 yr anniv on CBS (Grammy Tribute)

I would have liked to seen Clapton on While My Guitar Gently Weeps, being that he wrote the guitar solo. I'd like to think Clapton was asked and had a scheduling conflict with an upcoming tour starting in Tokyo.

Now that you mentioned Nora Jones...I would have preferred Nora over Katy Perry. We have to keep in mind that this was Grammy backed, so that's why Perry was there and the dude with the park ranger type hat and a few others, etc.

Peter Frampton looked to be having a FAB time up on stage, he was great. (I love his red guitar) The house band was superb. Lots of nice guitars ...liked Gary Clark's too.
