Topic: Nods, references in songs

Joe play tribute to Deep Purple (Prefect Strangers) in Bridge To Better Days ( 2008 live version). In Just Got Paid at 5: 21: Is it his improvisation or a musical nod, sort of tribute to someone? (2013, Hammersmith Apollo) I like this part very much.

Thank you.

Re: Nods, references in songs

I'm pretty sure it's a riff from "Still Of The Night" by Whitesnake. Joe is a fan.

Re: Nods, references in songs

That would be Peter Frampton's "Do you feel like we do"

Lady and gentleman, I am impressed smile Thank you.

Re: Nods, references in songs

Theres actually quite a few musical references in his 2013 arrangement of just got paid, there is of course the main riff, verse, and chorus, by zz top, then there is some still of the night riffs by white snake after the first guitar solo, then there is stratus by billy cobham after the theremin, then dazed and confused after stratus, and then back into just got paid

Thank you Django. I knew about Dazed, but Billy Coham is new to me. Where does it start (roughly)?

Re: Nods, references in songs

I love when Joe does this. A tip of the hat to past classics.
Hopefully the tradition will continue for years to come.

Joe does more nods, references, and salutes in his music than I have hairs on my......well, head would be hyperbole, so somewhere else less hyperbolic.  He's The Musical Meme Master of Isomorphic Duality, of past influences projecting future influencing! Simply stated. tongue

He's ALWAYS done this.  ALWAYS.  Frampton Comes Alive goes way back.  He toured with Frampton early on, and he had been nodding to it earlier than that.  Remember when the coda al fine of "Do You Feel Like We Do" ended a certain song?  "Waitin' For The Bus" before he had a dependable ride?  He does it with the blues, classical, jazz, etc. also!  He'll take the tone of one song, apply it to a riff of another, with the time from yet another, with his whooped cream and other delights on topping it all!  You can't keep up with him. yikes  Check out Bloodline. wink

There's a reason he's my favorite...actually more reasons than I have hairs on my head! big_smile
