Re: Joe has no Layla???

I Understand Joe here, if he'e referring to recognition and on the airways and over time yes maybe

But i think he must listen to his fans, we have many Layla's within his catologue which for the record are better arranged, sung and guitar playing is way more epic and emotional

yes that Layla hook within a nanosecond is recognisable and stays in peoples heads for decades, but i bet Eric dont for one second believe its his best song,

Joe may write that song one day with that riff that has instant worldwide recognition forevermore, where people say, "thats Joe Bonamassa"

i actually believe Joe's full Catologue is stronger than EC's, Joe's albums are immensely strong, maybe its tough for Blues/Rock to succeed like it did in the late 60's and 70's with those Hendrix Page Richards memorable riffs

as of now tho Joe is riding very high in the guitar world and he is ever pushing so that elusive layla, if he needs , which i dont believe he does may surface anytime soon

if we are talking recognisable i believe Sloe Gin is that, although Mountain Time is Joe's Signature Tune for Now

Re: Joe has no Layla???

I can understand a let down when a very popular song is not played.Over the top to say the show sucked because ....I do think that people may buy tickets to go to a show because of one song they are obsessed over.Sounds like this was the case with the Sloe Gin fan

Re: Joe has no Layla???

In terms of identity I think joe is striving for something more singular. His live stuff is undeniably him and I think he's getting closer and closer to his defining personal statement on a studio album, an original song or collection that transcends influences. I like much of his work but I think he knows he can go further with his voice, as diverse as it is.

Re: Joe has no Layla???

I am a big fan of Clapton. Personally for my taste, Layla is fantastic, but the song goes on a little too long in a repetitve way. I feel they almost didn't know how to wrap it up and end the song! Just my 2 cents...

Re: Joe has no Layla???

Thats a little unfair. Not every band can have a Stairway to Heaven or Layla. Some bands are better off for "Not" having one. These days, if JB came out with a "smash hit" it would be looked at the same way John Mayer fans look at "Your Body is a Wonderland." it's the song for the masses because only true fans like all the other stuff. The recognition and popularity would be nice, but media storms these days label any band's Layla into the one hit wonder bracket.

That has to be one of the most bizarre quotes I've seen on here and Joe would probably be embarrassed to read it.

Clapton has at least 4 or 5 game changing albums in rock history.  Not to mention 3 or 4 of the greatest live albums.

There's nothing wrong with enthusiasm but .....

Re: Joe has no Layla???

Great thread.  I hate to disagree with Joe but "no Layla"  is wrong.   Mountain Time, Asking Around for You, Django, Dust Bowl, Ballad of John Henry and Slow Train all come to mind.  I know that Django is a violin piece he reworked but it has become his own.   While in commercial sales maybe he does not have a Layla but in artistry and  heart he has many.  I can spot a Joe song in the first few notes as you all can.  Joe you are the best.

The guy that was disappointed because he did not play his favorite song totally missed the point.  The appeal of going to see Joe is watching him perform period....

I love both "Mountain Time" and John Henry". I think "Mountain Time" is a better written song than "John Henry" in that there is a little more to it's lyrics, yet to me "John Henry" is more interesting musically, especially the way Joe has been doing it live recently. Personally, I don't think Joe needs to have a "Layla". I don't need to hear the "one song" at every single show we go to. He has countless fantastic songs and I would love to hear so many of them. The problem with a "Layla" is that there is then an obligation to have to play it every show. The fact that people get all bent out of shape when he doesn't do "Sloe Gin", for example, just doesn't make sense to me. They should be happy they got something different that others places on the tour didn't get. Hearing "Never Make Your Move Too Soon" a couple of weeks ago totally made my night because it was such an unexpected treat. I'll take that kind of thing any night over an obligatory "Layla".

You´ve seen JB a lot of times, but if anyone see him FIRST he would be disapointed without John Henry, or Sloe Gin, or Mountain Time...

Re: Joe has no Layla???

Layla is a strange song.

I have about 20 different Live-versions of Layla, but none is better than the original.
In general I prefer live-versions, but this song is unique...

I don't know, I think it just depends on the particular person. Some people have their "must have" songs from his current setlist that they have to hear, but I don't have one absolute favorite song that I have to hear even the first time I saw him. I have some songs that are my top favorites, but unfortunately they don't get played. If they did I would be ecstatic, but I'm certainly not bummed about the show when they aren't played.
