Topic: Name of the instrument????

We attended the San Diego Concert 12/18/13 and were most amazed by the acoustic set... awesome stuff!!  What is the name of the instrument played by the player, stage left seated next to the percussion player.  The instrument was played with a bow.  The instrument lay on the player's lap seemingly made of wood with two sound holes similar to a violin.  The player's left hand seem to manipulate some sort of sliders on the neck of the instrument.  We were far from the stage using binoculars to try to figure out the instrument.  What was it???  Please help....

Thank you...

Welcome to the forum. That is a Nykleharpa, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyckelharpa . Joe's selection of master instrumentalists for his acoustic set sure provides a unique sound. If you'd like to see the acoustic set again from close up, check the vid link from the Santa Barbara show which is the full set I recorded there from quite close.
Please let us know how you came to be a fan and give a short intro. You came to the right place.
