Topic: Once again I come to you for help

Dear Everyone...so some of you know, I am a music writer for a few places, but a columnist for a local paper.  Joe is coming.  Blues in the Schools, the whole thing.

But here is the thing...I struggle.  Not with Joe, lets not go there.  But in general I am sort of out of ideas on how I can talk about music in any way fresh.

Joe is going to be my first real front page above the fold thing.  I have my interview time lined up, and all of that.

But, what do you guys think?  Objectively, what would you write if you wanted to explain to a stranger about Joe?

Also...and this is a joke...remember its in fun...

I think you guys should call yourself the...

Bona-mafia.

I saw the Elvis thing tonight.

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Dino,

We have all read over and over and over, how he started playing the guitar at age 4, opened for BB when 11 or 12.....how about the angle of his fight to keep the blues alive, how he brings new life to a older blues based song. What is his process of making it his but still paying tribute to those that have come before him. I think if you delve into that it will also give deeper explanation as to who Joe is for those who are not familar with him. You can also direct readers to the web site for the generic bio information that is everywhere.

Just my 2 cents........

~Rhonda

Thanks again for the great show the other night!

Hey Dino,

It's 12:45 am and I am not  in deep thought at this hour, but on the lighter side.....

I love to go to the dictionary/thesaurus and look up words.....looking up "mafia" which led me to a synonym  "coterie"

      co-te-rie  [koh-tuh-ree]
           1. a group of people who associate closely.
           2. an exclusive group, clique.
           3. a group of prairie dogs occupying a communal burrow.

Loved definition #3: Envision all of us  with our heads popping up & out of the ground, here & there,   on Joe's Forum (our communal burrow).

Patty, had a big laugh about the wonderful definition #3 ... smile
and
Dino, I think that the huge threat that Joe started about "Surfing the net" and so on would be an interesting topic ... as Rhonda said "his fight to keep the blues alive" and in what ways "Sloe Gin" brings new elements to the usual Blues-Rock thing ...

Re: Once again I come to you for help

I think I am sort of looking to do a few things...

1.  Find some inspiration in music.  When you talk to musicians each week, they all suck.  The same way I am sure Mother Theresa just said...Enough of the damn lepers, I want a baseball game.  It just gets hard.  I do not even like listening to music that I like.

2.  I want to do something cool for Joe.  I think that his image, and all the rest is sort of missing in public.  I mean most of you have spent a little one on one time iwth hin=m...know about the pajamas or the slippers...so I think that the cultivated image crosses the lines with the funny dorky guy.  I like the dorky guy a lot better than the other guy.

3.  Its not a sure sell out.  Its a big venue, and Joe while having a strong following, does not have the strongest following possible here.  The local blues society is in the dumper, so they are not helping promote, and radio does not care.  I think Joe might get some TV, for the schools thing, but that wont sell tickets.

4.  And I want you all to love me.

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Hi Dino and thanks for asking (I saw the Elvis show too, it was pretty good)..Mafia doesn't bother me..remember bats and knees, so be good......No posturing..And, remember to LISTEN.........A bit of bio is important because it explains how a 30 y/o man has had such experience already. I also would like to see discussion about his vision, what he would want his musical legacy to be. And ,of course, I too think any discussion about the problems he has with barriers from the "Blues Community" would lead to an interesting answer. Relax, you know he's easy going...

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Let's not rule out the mafia title too quickly.  We could all go to the shows dressed like gangsters or mafia types.  Now that would be pretty cool !

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Well.....if you look up the word "dork" in the dictionary, puh-leeze do not make reference to definition #2.  !!!!!     lol  lol  lol  lol    Who knew the dictionary could be so much fun?

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Jane,

To risk argument, one does not send the profile subject the profile for approval.  That is sort of a taboo.  It reeks of lack of objectivity, and allowing for correction for the purposes of pr.

I would no more send a review of a local muscian to a local musician, nor would I send an article to BB King for approval.

It is possible to call back and go over quotes, but not focus of the article.  That is a co option of the process that no writer can fall victim to.  Then one simply becomes a mouth piece for the artist, and that is not the role of the writer.

I think that the perception of dork as a negative one is incorrect.  The dork factor is endearing.  I mean no one will ever be Junior Wells again, its cool that a person who plays an old music, lives in the 21st Century...with an iphone and all.

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Nothing wrong with repeating bio information, even if WE have seen it hundreds of times. The article publication has value to Joe in that NEW people will see it and read it for the first time so some repeated bio information is a good thing. It fills in the blanks for the new fan that usually asks "Where did this guy come from?"

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Hi Dino,

Nice effort on your part!  Nothing that hasn't been mentioned is coming to mind right now.  I don't think either of these two words should be associated with Joe in any way...dork I don't get at all and mafia is totally negative.  Even if it could be twisted humorously, it will be misunderstood & leave a bad impression.  I'm not sure if you were at all serious about either, so this could be a moot point.  smile

I just thought I would give you some enlightenment regarding Mother Teresa.

The only reason she would have a thought like you said, Enough of lepers, is because she would want the world rid of Leprocy.  She would not want anyone to suffer from it.  She worked her whole life to ease human suffering.  She was a very selfless person.

Spot on the nail Angela.
Must admit though I did actually laugh out loud at the Bonamafia comment (I think I've missed some of the previous comments by/with Dino so I won't comment further, although he did say it was a joke) but do think it will be misunderstood if he meant to use it in the article.

I have had very small experience of being quoted in a newspaper once and it completely missed the point - I would have loved the oportunity to have a look at the article before publication and made sure the words reflected where I was coming from.

Maybe some words to get across that this guy is really, really, REALLY tallented. We all read about musicians and in print they all sound the same. Make people want to go out of their way to listen if they don't already know of Joe. He is after all a special talent smile

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Hey Dino,

In addition to Joe's accomplishments, a couple things to make it interesting.

I got an idea to spin around, its not totally original, because it came to me after a DJ spoke on Sirius radio.

What is it about the blues that got you hooked?  Meaning something like this...what ingredient of the blues gravitated you towards it...the guitar sounds..the lyrics...

How can the blues, which are always sad, make people feel good?   or
Why would any of the younger generation be drawn to the blues, they  generally are more privledged and self-serving, can they relate?

A DJ was saying its the story telling, the blues always tell a story. If one relates to the story, it makes them feel good that someone else understands how they feel, especially when you're down in the dumps, having some bad luck or bad love, etc..my thinking there.  Food for thought, maybe...

Joe's relationship w/BB. King...King of the Blues...Where do you see yourself when you're 64 smile or 82, like BB is today?  Still on the road as much...will the road always be your middle name?  (that's a Bonnie Raitt line)

You've played with some wonderful musicians and you are only 30, anyone in particular still on your  wish list?  (it's been asked before, but still interesting)

And if time allowed a personal question just to kick things up a notch-always interesting, but Joe could feel really put on the spot, this one's iffy...ask about his beautiful girlfriend Lea, do they ever write songs together, help each other musicially, any wedding bells in the near future?  wink

And about your #4- I haven't met a Dino I didn't love- Dino from the Flinstones, Dean Martin was Dino and the guy that cuts my hubby's hair is Dino!! smile

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Roy...I am.

Angela, that was awesome.  Where at 65...that is perfect.

That is it.

Thanks.  Thats what I needed.  I got the article now.

Re: Once again I come to you for help

Dino,
Let us know how or where we can read it or post it here. I'm expecting Pulitzer prize winning material so don't dissapoint. Be carefull if we don't approve we will come and find you. All those Bonamassa fan brownie points you have will turn to demerits.

Re: Once again I come to you for help

See that...just when a guy is feeling comfortable.

Nah just kidding.

Hey Jim...did you hear I dedicated a song to your son?
