Topic: Blues Masters Finalists - Did My Entry Even Get Reviewed?

I think my Blues Masters entry might not have been considered due to a technical glitch.

Back in late March, I sent Yoov.io an email expressing a concern I had about my contest entry.  My concern stemmed from the fact that while my contest entry on youtube was generating many views, likes, and positive reviews and comments, my yoovio contest page was not reflecting that response at all.

I explained that I noticed the direct link I provided to my yoov.io channel in the description box of my youtube video, when clicked, would take a user to the Blues Masters contest HOMEPAGE and NOT to my yoov.io channel. I wasn't aware of this until someone made a comment on my youtube page saying the link did not work.

Apparently, the fact that I used a "period" at the end of my contestant name ("Damian S.") did something weird to my hyperlink. When clicked, it would not allow me, or anyone else for that matter, to link from my youtube page to my yoovio channel (Please try it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ub9117NBME).

I tried deleting that period after the "S" and it still would not make the hyperlink work.  I even tried other contestants hyperlinks pasted directly from their Yoov.io page in their youtube description boxes - theirs worked, mine did not.  That's when emailed Yoovio immediately using the contact form on the Blues Master website because I was worried that this was handicapping me in the competition.  I never received a response.

Yesterday, I saw the results for the 10 finalists (#11 is mine). And after taking a look at each of their respective views, likes, and dislikes on youtube, I decided out of curiosity to compare it to my own.

1. Jack Fosset          4,290 views    18 Likes       1 Dislike
2. Mario V. Sen          1,134 views    9 likes       0 Dislikes
3. Matt Hines          1,473 views    29 Likes       0 Dislikes
4. Brandon Sollins  795 views            9 Likes       1 Dislike
5. Golan Eini          3,558 views    97 Likes       0 Dislikes
6. Tony Stramella   4,184 views    13 Likes       0 Dislikes
7. Steve Balkun    967 views    7 Likes       1 Dislike
8. Bill "Tracer" Tracy 2,227 views     21 Likes       0 Dislikes
9. Claudio Tristano  1,899 views    31 Likes       0 Dislikes
10. Eric Happe            1,257 views    14 Likes       0 Dislikes

11. Damian S.             3,779 views    147 Likes       0 Dislikes

Now, I'm not going to criticize anyone here. There are some great players in the finals, and they clearly did something right.

But what I'm really perplexed by is the selection process, criteria and how those "points" are tabulated on a contestant's yoov.io channel.

Out of the 10 finalists chosen, I have the 3rd highest view total and I have the most likes by far.  All of my views and likes were generated organically and honestly. Per the contest rules, I repeatedly spread the word about sharing my video through Facebook, my personal gmail account, my youtube channel which has over 3,500 subscribers. I could not have generated the aforementioned youtube response without doing that legwork.

However, my Yoovio contestant page has only "50 points."  There is clearly a disconnect there.

Because of the disparity between my youtube page and the yoovio page, I feel like my entry might not have been considered because of the hyperlink glitch.  Did this prevent people from sharing my video?  People clearly could not get to my yoov.io channel through no fault of my own. The numbers just don't add up or make any sense to me.

I do understand that "judging" is required for a contestant to get into the top 10. If in fact my entry was judged and reviewed, but it did not pass muster, I could accept that. However, if my entry was not even judged because of a technical error (which I notified them of and tried in earnest to fix) because I didn't have enough "Points" or whatever to get judged, that would be really unfortunate.

Anyway, I truly loved this contest and I was excited to participate in it.  I also met some really cool people along the way.
A sincere congratulations to the 10 finalists and best of luck in L.A.!

I have never heard of yoov.io, I though it was just YouTube?

Yoov.io is the company that tracked the popularity of the contestant entries.

Damien, sounds like you have good cause to be upset but you reacted like a true gentleman.  Thanks for that.

Thanks Sally.  I'm just looking for answers here. I have absolutely nothing against the finalists, I wish them all the best.  In fact, I will probably attend the competition anyway since I live in L.A. and I'm down the street from the House of Blues on the sunset strip.

My frustration is directed towards Yoov.io for not responding to a legitimate issue which I feel hurt my chances in the competition which was completely out of my control and which I could not fix myself. I contacted them immediately when I found out about the hyperlink months ago (In March).  I mean why even have a contact page if you're not going to respond to anyone?

Also, based on my numbers on youtube in comparison to  the finalists, I felt as though I should have been in there.

But what's more troubling is that the numbers between youtube and yoovio don't make any sense. For example, on youtube I had

3,779 views - 147 Likes - 0 Dislikes, but I only had 50 points on Yoov.io?

But then there were other contestants who had 1,300 views on youtube but 77,000+ points on Yoov.io? What metric is Yoov.io even using to determine these "points"?

It just calls into question the integrity of Yoov.io and the whole selection process.

Jane, thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it!

You bring up an excellent point about Joe's reputation being attached to this.

Yoov.io got a lot of traffic and exposure through people making their videos and sharing them everywhere. But it really seems to me that Yoov.io has absolutely no accountability or integrity when it comes to being responsive and how this contest was handled.  I had a weird feeling when they stated on the website that the results would be announced in early June, but we get them in mid July.  Clearly, something wasn't going according to plan.

I don't know a thing about the contest but that was great. I like the Lonesome Road submission that made the top 10 too. If it was a glitch in the system that would be a shame if that wasn't seen by the judges.

DUDE! WOW!! That was great playing! I am in awe!!!

Jim, I really appreciate that. Thanks! The only reason I feel the way I do is because of the data I have available to me through youtube and being able to make comparisons.  I do not in any way feel like I'm better than anyone else because everyone has their own way of expressing themselves on the guitar.

I got an amazing, humbling response on youtube, but my yoov.io channel did absolutely nothing which is really strange. The only thing I can think of is the hyperlink which Yoov.io wouldn't even respond to. It really bugs me because there's no way based on my youtube response that I should have 50 points on my Yoov.io channel.

And Golan Eini who did a winning entry with Lonesome Road did a knock-out job and absolutely deserves his spot among the finalists.

Damian, that is great playing. Kudos on your classy way of handling this obvious technical SNAFU during the contest. Also, your "Clobberfest" video has made my day - I'm still laughing.

Subscribing for your lessons, but Clobberfest is great too.  smile

What are the specs on that Les Paul and its pickups?  That's nice tone.

Very nice playing Damian. One thing I really like is that you seemed to have a plan. IOW, you thought out what you were going to play and still left room for improvisation. One thing I have noticed consistently while watching some of the videos is that players would tend to run out of steam about 2 min in.

I prefer your scoring to Yoov.io's wink At least you let people know how you did the scoring! wink

This put a smile on my face, thanks. And yes, that's and Angus Young t-shirt.

Thanks Bill! I have to admit I'm still gnashing my teeth. I would never disparage any of the finalists, but I am really upset with Yoov.io. If a company assumes the responsibility of putting on a contest like this,  they owe a duty of care to the participants (i.e. at a bare minimum being available to troubleshoot issues in a timely manner). Yoov.io got a lot of free advertising off the backs of the 2,600 contestants who made videos for this competition.  In my case, they were the only people who could have fixed my problem with the hyperlink, and apparently could not be bothered to respond at all.  In fact, I have yet to read one thing anywhere stating they responded to someone.

And thanks for subscribing and welcome to the Mash and Flutter world! I think you'll find a lot of interesting guitar licks on there.

I had fun making clobberfest. I can always count on those two cats to keep my entertained.

The Les Paul is a 1996 LP std that has been heavily tricked out.  It's on it's 4th set of machine heads, Tone Pro's bridge and tailpiece, RS Guitar Works Modern Wiring Kit.  In this video, I have a Alnico Pro II in the bridge and a Custom Lindy Fralin in the Neck. However, I just put some Sheptone Tributes in about 2 weeks ago and the guitar has never sounded better.
