Topic: Your Stir with the Stars

If this thread has been done, move this to the end of it. A "Stir with the Stars" was what some DJ in my memory bank called interactions with stars, usually by chance, and unique in some way. This isn't intended for routine "Meet and Greet" stories unless there was something unique!

Mine happened on St. Patrick's Day in 1974, at McSorley's Ale House in NYC, the oldest continually existing bar in the US. The lineup begins at 5 am and theres a line all day, doors opened at 8 or so, and me and 3 friends grab a table at the front window. The table is tucked into an alcove about 4 feet from the edge of the front of the bar. Around 11 or so a guy walks in, waist length hair, fur where a beard and mustache was trying to make itself seen, and one absolutely stunning girl on each arm. The hands of those arms finding their way to their a$$es, clearly knowing their location!

After a few minutes he lights up a joint, shares it with the girls, and then turns around and passes it around our table. He goes to the bathroom, and the two young ladies start making out...they definitely needed to get a room!  We had little or no conversation with the 3 of them other than thank you's, awesomes, etc. and had no idea who he was or that he "was" anybody. They took off, obviously having better things to do than we did, since we were there till closing!

About 5 months later, lo and behold, front page of the New York Daily News..."Steely Dan Guitarist Arrested for Statutory Rape", with a picture of Walter Becker, his waist length straggly hair and feeble attempts at a beard. Pretzel Logic was released a couple of weeks before St Patricks Day, and we were playing it non-stop, but never bothered to look at their pictures till the arrest!

(BTW if anyone is or knows a photoshop guru who wants to make a picture for me, I need it desperately for August!

August 10, 1970, day of infamy!   I was in the army stationed in San Antonio, Tx and it actually made front page news there (or I saw a NY paper somehow). Man I was pissed!

Re: Your Stir with the Stars

I do work on all kinds of electronics on ships, yachts, anything that floats. Summer of '95 I get a call on a Friday afternoon fairly late, about 4pm just before closing, from a transient sailboat at the Harbor Police dock that had come in to clear for Mexico and had a radio that was broken. I go down, it is near dark, and there is a beautiful, big and very old wooden schooner named Ragland tied up. I step aboard, call out the tech is here and a crewman invites me into the saloon. He points out the radio and I commence working on it and don't really take a good look at the folks in the saloon who were having a bite and beers at the table. Pretty soon I figure out the problem as a loose connection, fix it and test the radio. I turn to the folks sitting there to present a bill for my work and there is Niel Young with a big grin on his face. I about messed my drawers. He said, "Good job pal, have a beer and sit down." Well,we had several beers and some other stuff  sitting around the table in the saloon of the Ragland talking music and boats. That was pretty cool.

He paid the bill, gave me a nice tip and I helped cast off the lines, gave a wave and wished them smooth sailing as they proceeded on down Mexico way. big_smile Here's a link to some photos of it and other Niel Young stuff. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Nei … ;FORM=IGRE

I've had many encounters with the rich and famous over the years since I work on some of the most luxurious yachts in the world, but none that matched that one. Malcom Forbes came close. He gave me a Capitalist Tool Bag and a $500 tip.

Great encounter. Only a music fan would value meeting Neil as better than Forbes

Re: Your Stir with the Stars

First of all we live on the Jersey Shore so Bruce Springsteen (when he lived in Rumson) we ran into often.  He once almost knocked me down crossing Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright on his motorcycle. In retrospect....

But two sets of things.  I used to work near 8th Street in Greenwich Village and passed Eletric Ladyland studios on the way to work and back, ran into a number of musicians.

Three years ago it turned out the Marriott we stayed at for Crossroads 2010 was where most of the artists stayed. Not EC himself lol.  In the lobby of the hotel we ran into Derek and Susan when we checked in.  Met a lot of bands in line at the Starbucks in the hotel.  But the morning of the show I walk almost right into Warren Haynes.  I asked him about Gregg who had just had his transplant and he seemed so happy to be asked rather than asking for an autograph (I had nothing to sign nor a pen anyway)

When did you work on 8th street?  I lived on East 4th for a few years, to be close to McSorleys,  and  the Fillmore East on one side and CBGB on the other.

From 1984 to a few years ago.  Worked at 770 Broadway. US Trust, half of it bought by Chase.  Other half bought by Schwab then Bank of America. My department sold to an asset manager so managed to get laid off a year ago after that many years.
