Hi folks
i´ve seen joe in Hannover and his sound was just overwhelming, saw his amps but couldn´t figure out what amps are actualy shaping his sound, there´s the friedman which is obviously on but what about all the other old marshalls and the dsl´s in the back?
very confusing:D
so i´d be glad if we could unlock that secret, maybe joe can help us

There seems to be some elusiveness in the new setup. Supposed to be a rig rundown from premier guitar coming out soon so perhaps that will shed some light.
Guessing the DSL is in the back in a rack or something and possibly being utilized for the effects loop and for its tone. Since there are 4 4x12s now, I assumed each head was running its own entire cab as opposed to the split 4x12 configuration before. And one of the 5 total heads running the theremin.
I *believe* the main amp is a smallbox 50W Marshall lead spec Plexi. The DSL (usually hidden around back) is a "wet amp" just for use of its fx loop. The rest are spares, etc. Speakers are older Greenbacks and not pushed very hard. Main drive pedal was a TS-808.
This seems to be accurate based on the recent show that I saw him at.

thanks, i also thought that the del might be his wet amp but is he just using the fx loop of the amp or the whole amp?
but there a video of him where he considers that the dsl is his secret weapon. What ever thats suposed to mean:D

I might be totally wrong, but a bit a gear freak myself.....here are my thoughts on his rig
Freidman Dirty Shirley and Suhr HW SL-68, are on cabinets but not plugged in and I what I saw at Vegas and Boston gig, turned on but still in stand by, with no cables plugged into input jack. The Marshall ( super pa??? ), appears to be the same, on but not used? The 4th visible head is smallbox Marshall? Rack behind has ( 2 ) DSL: stage amp and spare?
Believe he is sending Diaz and delay??? to smallbox Marshall from the DSL, so the marshall head on cabinet ( used for power amp only ), his "wet" tone?
Looking at pedalboard.....one set of connections from one patchbay is for the loop of the DSL ( believe it is DD3 and Rotosphere ) sent to loop, and the other patchbay on board looks like it has ( 2 ) sets of outs being used?
I think he is running a "quasi" Wet / Dry rig....the DSL is tone generator, and juicing with tube screamer, pork lion and the fet driver ( noticed he engaged pedals more then when using 4 amp combination ), and think that DSL is feeding DRY cabinet or cabinets ( pics I have seen online, appears not all cabinets plugged in, and not all mic'ed, not that it matters with Palmers?? ), and line out from DSL / Palmers is feeding Diaz and possible delay, returning to the small box marshall for power, the Wet side of the rig.
Some may speak badly of DSL, but I used ( 2 ) for several years, and great meat and potato amps!!!!
Am interested in hearing what he is actually using, think I am close.....but most likely am WAY OFF, lol......

Same here, Marshall are a bit behind on this, think Les Paul and you think Marshall, just look at how many Les Paul's have been sold with Joe's name on, the amp would do the same I'm sure. They really are a strange outfit sometimes.

It would essentially be the same amp as the Slash model, replicated after the Silver Jubilee, so I'm not sure we can see something like that come any time soon. It would be cool though.

Sorry for the newb question, but how do you use the DSl for a "wet" rig? I barely understand just plugging into one amp and playing it, so what you describe is a mystery to me!

Not a dumb question at all! The terms "wet" and "dry" mean basically, "effect" or "no effect". When people play through more than one amp at a time, some chose to separate effects into specific amps or route maybe a delay into one amp (this is now your "wet" amp, and keep the other amp void of effects ("dry" amp).
The DSL has an effects loop and many people prefer the delay and or reverb, to be put through an effects loop so it comes into the signal after the preamp (knobs on front). None of the older Marshalls have an effects loop. So one possible reason other than the DSL's tone for it being an included amp in the new setup, is the fact that is has an effects loop.
I think it is used like a guitar amplifier. Guitar goes into it, and then it amplifies the guitar signal. Or he could use it as underwear... not sure.

Thanks Helrazr; I was joking about barely understanding one amp, but my unfamiliarity with multi-amp setups had me conjuring some idea that he was just using the effects loop of the DSL, etc.
So he just kicks in the DSL when he wants the effects? That makes sense and is simpler than I thought!

TJ...here is how i believe joe signal is running
Guitar. --> pedalboard. --> Marshall jcm2000 dsl100 ( the boss dd3 delay and rotosphere are running in the effects loop of the dsl100 ) --> Palmer speaker simulator ( feeding front of house pa possibly? And feeding Diaz reverb unit and possibly another delay ). -->. Marshall cabinet ( completes one side of wet / dry set up ) and the other line out from Diaz reverb to Marshall ( used as a power amp ) to another Marshall cabinet
As mentioned earlier, wet means effects running and dry mean no effects. Typically you will see W/D/W in explaining. Dry would be center and stereo wet ( left and right ), ran a rig like this for a while.....killer tone, front of house requires 3 mics.

They have the same number of caps, but the transformers are different...I think? Drakes to Dagnalls...
The design may be the same...but the components...maybe not.
anyways a quick change of the topic
i just got a dsl, probably made round 2004 i realy like it but there´s one little thing that may not be right
the amount of bass in the green channel with crunch engaged. Actually its supossed to sound like a plexi isn´t it? but it doesn´t i own a 1987x and the bass is nice and thigh but on the del even with bass on 3 there´s too much oomph. ( that realy low bass ) Whith less bass it gets kinda thin. Is that kinda normal or might it help to change tubes and rebias that thing? ( Since there are still the original marshall tubes in it )
any experiences?
It might not sound bassy enough when played by itself. In my experience, the louder you go, the less bass you want. Otherwise it won't cut through the mix. Also, if you are at desired volume and the band wants you to turn the amp up or down a little bit... I adjust the mids instead of the volume. More for louder and less for quieter. It's all in how you hear it through the mix.
