Topic: Computer Problems

Hey, this morning when I tried to turn on my computer, it wouldn't turn on at all. Everything is plugged in right, nothing missing, etc. So, I turned off the power to the extension cord and unplugged everything for a few minutes, plugged it all back in, turned the power on, and that still didn't solve the problem. I think the power supply might be bad, but the monitor and printer will still come on, just not the computer itself. Anyone know what this problem could be? This hasn't happened before. If anyone knows, please help, thanks.

That sounds like power supply or maybe just the on/off switch. If you have some electrical skills you can open it up and check for a possible blown fuse, loose or bad wires internally or switch issue. Beyond that it is time for a tech. Computer power supplies are not usually repairable, a replacement unit would be called for if that is the problem. I'm assuming it is a desktop. If it is a laptop, there is not much you can do.

This happened to me with the laptop which preceded the one I use now, but I don't see why the same problem couldn't afflict a desktop system. In my case, the motherboard was fried (from old age, not a lightning strike or anything). When those things die, you could rig 'em up to a nuclear power plant and they ain't turning on again...

I am a big fan of Geek Squad, and they did everything they could to save the patient. If it DOES turn out to be a motherboard issue, that is a much less serious problem with a desktop system. Laptops typically have to have very specific, original spec-shaped motherboards, but most good desktops can use MBs from any number of vendors...the replacement cost for a laptop (if you can even find a replacement MB) is ridiculous, but should be quite reasonable for a desktop system...
