Topic: Rediscovering Joe songs

Okay, today I am at work and it is a one of those days doing tedious stuff.  I decided to listen to all my joe albums starting with the oldest to newest.  I made it too Dust Bowl and realized I love the song Heartbreaker.  Yet in the past I usually just skipped it. Does this happen to you?  I think that Joe has these little nugguets of goodness on all his albums and I just get so tuned into one or two songs and I skip the rest.

made my day and now I have played heartbreaker like 5 times in a row.  Joe Bonamassa you are the best!

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

Would bever skip Heartbreaker! LOL! Can't say I have had songs that I bypassed to discover later.I have gone for long stretches without listening to an album and then having the joy of hearing a song again.

Joe has such a huge catalog it is easy to miss playing some of the oldies for a while. Rediscovering an old friend is fun!

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

Hi Mary,

It always takes me a couple listens to really appreciate anyone's tunes.  I can relate, I kinda skipped over Meaning of the Blues and Black Lung Heartache at first.  Now they are all-time favorites!  I have learned to be sure to play the ones that don't catch my interest at first...it really pays off.

I too am still working on Joe's full catalog, and with the exception of Sweet Rowena (good but maybe loses my interest cause it doesn't have the complexity of other songs), I have become attached to every song on the CDs I have so far, about 8 of them + 3 DVDs.

And what a joyful project it is, right?

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

Sally, so true.  i have all but one album of joes in by library.  i tend to listen to one in particular for a week or so and then move on.  i also made myself  a playlist on the ipod that has my personal favorites so this is what i mostly listen to.  So it is easy for me to miss songs.

Thats why today going through each album i felt so overwhelmed with the magic of Dust
Bowl and it's songs.   Joe seems always new and exciting to me even if it is some of his older stuff.  love that boy

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

So today I have been listening to You and Me and have decided that Joe is just brilliant.    Even on this early album you can hear how great he is going to be.   I love Joe's cover of Tamp Em Up Solid.  A great Ry Cooder song and just excellent by Joe.  His back catalog is just full of these little nuggets. Wow. Thanks Joe.  You give me much joy.

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

*LOL*  I do that with every artist I listen to and to think I thought I was the only one.

There might be two or three songs that get my attention right away and I'll listen to those for a long time. Eventually I start exploring the rest of the album.  I wander with music as it's usually a certain sound that grabs me first.

Dare I say it but I didn't like the song "Dislocated Boy" at first.  It wasn't until I was listening to "Shinkicker" by Rory Gallagher that I came back around to "Dislocated Boy" and fell in love with it.  Now I crank it!

I am probably an artists worst nightmare as I never listen to songs in order on a CD.

Mary I couldn't agree more! I have listened to every Joe cd and there is not one I don't like! I always seem to have a new favorite song every time I listen to a cd all the way through. Joe is the best smile

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

My favorite overlooked tune is the secret track after the last song on "SILT"...really cool bass... heavy psychadelic vibe...Does anyone know the name of this tune? "Mother Love" maybe....Great song! If you haven't heard this tune...it's about 30 seconds after" The Hard Way" ends...It's not on the discs track list...I'm not even sure it's Joe singing...

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

It's funny you bring this up! Normally I spin all the live stuff. Over and over and over. Beacon has been my favorite lately. But today on the way to work I  thought I would check out Dust Bowl again. What a great set of songs. I really enjoyed every one. It has been so long. So then I went to Sloe Gin. It was almost like New music day! I bought so many albums so quickly that some of them fell through the cracks and didn't get as much play.

Side note - wvgirlinky, love your avatar. I remember buying that magazine, and I still have it. I hadn't played guitar in awhile, went to Guitar Center on my lunch break and saw it. Thought, Huh. Wonder who this guy is? A few months later the RAH show was on PBS, I got tickets and here we are!

Yes, the infamous "Mother Love."  And yes, that is Joe's voice.

I love that song, but Phil does not, too bad. I always crank it up when it comes on. There is just something really cool about it.

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

Funny that you mention revisiting old Joe songs.  Just yesterday I put on a playlist entitled Joe Bonabest to listen to while working out and I was reminded of what a hard hitting back catalog this man has.  It included Reconsider Baby, The River, Long Distance, The Ballad of John Henry, Happier Times, Last Kiss, Dirt in my Pocket, Another Kinda Love, Ballpeen Hammer, Tea for One ... etc. ... songs I hadn't listened to in months and fell in love with all over again.  Great way to start the day! cool

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

Great post. For my two pence worth, I never got last kiss first time around; I wouldn't skip past it, but it never really pushed the right button for me. I heard the Tour de Force version and it just electrified me for some reason. It really turned me on to what is a great song. It was something of a revelation. These things happen, but that's the beauty of following such a prolific and diverse artist as Joe. Your brain can't store and recall all of the memories and emotions the songs induce and every listen brings something new and surprising (for me at least).

Re: Rediscovering Joe songs

Not just revisiting-newer Joe fan so I spent a lot of time getting to know his older stuff. First time I listened to So It's Like That I thought it was pretty good. Now probably one of my fave Joe CD's. Takin' The Hit, Pain And sorrow, Under The Radar, Mountain Time, The Hard Way- Just sooo raw and so damn good!!

Dont need a helmet to get me through life-walk across the water blame it on foolish pride.
