Topic: LIU show blinding

This was my third JB concert in the past year and a half. The first was in westbury and the second was the one at the Beacon which was recorded. The LIU show was not a pleasant experience.  First i like Joe playing the blues and most of the music selection was not blues. The most unpleasant part was the lights aimed at the stage kept rotating to the audience and was blinding. I could not watch the stage because they hurt my eyes and were aimed too frequently at me. I have night vision blindness which made it worse but my brother who was with me does not and he commented on it first. Joe finished the concert in great style but the other stuff ruined it completely. No more Joe concerts for me.

That is just a ploy to sell his Joe B sunglasses available at the merchandise table. smile

You know this guy is talking about the Tilles Center show which has been talked about in depth in another topic.
I've stayed away from commenting but I was at that show and I too have come away very disappointed in the robotic like way that the entire show went down. This guy is right about the lights which I didn't mind too much, but the lack of feeling in the music and the constant need for applause, which was quite frankly nauseating, really put me off. I don't need to be told when to applaud, if I feel like clapping I will, it was nothing short of  embarrassing.

I attended the show with a number of hard core Joe fans and we were all BUMMED after this show.

Looking forward to some better Joe shows in the future.

Oh yes the Tica thread. I only saw one show on this tour in Tulsa. I consider myself pretty hard core. I liked the changes to the show. Lighting, set list, and shtick. I can be somewhat difficult to please with changes to anything Joe B does but it seems to be working. The new fans I brought thought it was great. As long as he sends most of the crowd home wowed then I reserve judgment. I have my preferences and I'm sure you do too with your long time experience as a fan. Things have changed a lot. Not everybody is going to like the changes.

I have many friends that have been on the bandwagon since the first time in OKC 2003 and many that still don't get it. The ones that do may prefer one tour over the other, one band line up over the others but at the end of the day they still feel there isn't anybody else that puts on a more consistent show than Joe year after year. Your critique was credible, from the aspect I know you have some Joe history, and I won't make light of it, pardon the pun, but the original post seemed a little petty. You seemed to pile on a bit with the subjective criticisms about lack of feeling and begging for applause remarks.

Petty?  Maybe.  As an entertainer I know that ANYONE can have a bad night...

Just a BTW, y'all; I've never mentioned it, and I didn't think about it when I was sitting with Joe in Fla. but those lights in the audiences face are one of the reasons someone I know won't go again.  If they start flashing I might have a seixure,  wink

Sorry if you think it was petty. Try to imagine yourself in my position. I think joe is a great guitarist and bluesman and i wanted to see every concert i could. Here i took the time and money as well as a drive in from pennsylvania to see a great show. I could not watch most of it because an excessive amout of the turning of the stage lighting into my eyes was exceptionally uncomfortable and even started to cause some minor pain. My brother was with me and he too is a fan as i introduced him to joe in the other two concerts. He complained about the lights and the quality of the music sets as well and is not bothered by night vision problems. If all i wanted to do is listen and not look i could have turned to the albums i have. Watching is most of the reason to go to the concert. It was not cool to be forced to turn away so many times. Maybe my seating position relative to the lights was a factor i do not know but it was a ruined concert for me. Joe should rethink the lighting as most of his audience is middle aged as i have noted and night blindness affects many in that age bracket. I have been at other concerts where this is done but it was overdone here far too much. I am mystified as to why any lighting guy would think it a cool thing to do but they have limitations as to what they can do and probably think it is what the audience wants is to have bright lights in their eyes while they impress everyone with lights that can turn. I just want to be entertained by the artist and their music. A good light show is cool but blinding the audience is not. I did not think too much about the applause thing as i only applaud when i am pleased and saved almost all until Joes rousing finale. The worst begging for applause i ever saw was elton john in wilkes barre a couple of years ago. I love his older music but he was a major turnoff in concert. He actually took triumphant prances about the stage after every song egging the audience on for applause. That is for another forum however. Joe was pretty much his usual rapid fire delivery as far as i noticed.

I wonder if the new lights are maybe a little too powerful for the venues that Joe plays. My kids were sitting in the upper balcony at the Warner Theatre and they said they had to shield their eyes quite a bit and couldn't see the stage when the lights were pointed up at them. I remember many a Dead show where their lights would sweep up and over the audience, but because the venues were so much larger, the lights were able to disperse more and you would be more bathed in light rather than blinded by it. Since the lights are a new addition, maybe they just need to be tweeked a bit to have them work more effectively for everyone involved.

Upon thinking more, i suppose the problem was due to a light directly hitting my location as apposed to not being hit directly and only catching a spread beam. In any event no concert goer should be forced to deal with it. For those who are unaware of what night blindness does it intensifies light to the point where everything around the light is not visible. When intense light is directly aimed into the eye pain usually results and this strikes many as they enter middle age. As i said before my brother was still bothered by this too. When the show in westbury used laser effects, i was not bothered at all. It must be that the finer beam didnt hit directly in my eyes and so did not have an effect. That was an enjoyable light show but that is an aside to the artist and the music which is the focus of the evening.
