some really shocking pictures coming out, - unbelievable to see New York/Manhattan like this, - we have some friends over there on a weeks holiday, actually the kid who plays drums with my son so hope he and his family are okay. Anybody know if flight are back taking off out of JFK?

Last I heard JFK and LaGuardia were still pretty flooded.  I think JFK might be in better shape than LaGuardia.  If you are on FB check this out:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/JetBlue?fref=ts

Hi Alby,

It's Spring over there isn't it?  Your weather report is a nice reminder that there's a ray of sunshine somewhere every day.

I live a long way from the east coast, but in Indiana we've been getting Sandy's wind since last night.  Watching the news reports is really depressing.  7 or 8 million people without power, with a blizzard in some areas.  The death toll last heard was 17 people, but I believe this number may climb.  My heart goes out to all forum members caught in this freak of nature.

Very Good !
Yep. Middle of Spring at present.
Come Summer ...aside from some stinkin' hot weather we get a few horrible storms with flash floods. Nothing as concentrated as over there. During a dry spell we get the odd Dust Storm.

The bad weather hits the Northern States like Queensland and the northern parts of Western Aust.
They are in the tropical zone.

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

Encouraging words all around.  Good to hear, although I first heard of the poor 8 yr.old boy killed by a tree in New York, but had no idea where it was and knowing it could be anywhere outside New York City where there's soooooo many trees not anchored by concrete.  Condolences for families and friends those dying or injured or suffering any loss (no matter how or what) as a result.  Nationally, keep an overall healthy thankful perspective, with much gratitude.  Stuff is replaceable.  Or if not, it still only stuff.  Remember natural disasters around the world and the HUGE death tolls often reported and be very thankful.  People take care of family, friends, AND neighbors far beyond Sandy's huge reach back there.  We take care of our own, but it always as we should every day only when many others have a much, much worse day than imaginable compared to a typical and typically taken for granted, very blessed day.

Peace to all, hope for return to "normal" (or a new normal acceptable) A.S.A.P.  Blessings, comforts, and kindness, and continued HOPES.

as far as NYC that really bites. at least though its not a nuclear power plant melt down.........then they wouldn't be able to ever go back.....  hmm

I really feel a need to express my thoughts on this terrible story....I cant even comment on other uplifting stories, such as a baseball championship in my back yard, when millions suffer endlessly....my heart goes out to all that are effected by the storm

God Bless neutral

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

A neighbor checked on my house and all is well. My heater and hot water heater are down about 18" from the first floor level.  Water came up there apparently and knocked the pilot out, which he got back on. My heater is less than a year old, we'll have to check things out when we get there, the water went down, I think the heater is ok. There was lots of confusion today with getting on the island and major traffic jams.

Its hard to explain what an emotional roller coaster this week has been, based on water marks I saw in photos of homes on beach block, I wasn't too worried for myself anymore. As things unfolded, It was mind numbing to see so much devastation in the TV coverage.. Sandy made landfall either in my town or less than a mile from me, but the real wrath of Sandy was further north. We were so lucky, and I'm so grateful, but feel kinda' guilty for all those that have suffered so much. The coverage on the news is very, very sad. I think I feel the worst for all those homes that burnt to the ground in New York (many of them belonged to NY firefighters who helped on Sept. 11th) and people being killed by falling trees. North Jersey and New York really got hit hard.  Staten Island got slammed in 2 different directions.

Hopefully no storm will ever match or come close to Sandy, ever, ever again!! Its nice to see people coming together to help one another. And the only good thing about Sandy was a reprieve from political ads...for a day maybe...

Where do you live...just tell me your county? I live in Burlington County and the shore crib is in Atlantic County near Margate, home to Lucy the Elephant, who fared very well!!  http://levins.com/lucy.html   What totally blows my mind is, IF Sandy made landfall in Cape May, my house would probably look like Seaside Heights. It has been a humbling reality check!!

For those of you who are on FB here is a page someone started to try and hook lost/found pets from the storm area back up with their owners.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/SandysPets

It's a bit confusing at the moment but hope it may help some.

I knew the source of that homemade Chicken soup aroma was coming northwest of me!!
I hail from Cumberland County.
Anyone going to the southern shore towns from Delaware usually roll through my back yard.
Again, glad to hear things were better than expected for you.

PS: I saw a picture of Lucy in the AC Press reporting she survived the storm quite well.  (I believe she had extensive work done on her just a few years ago.  She had a good surgeon.)

Re: Frankenstorm aka Hurricane Sandy

Out in western MD at our place near Deep Creek Lake to assess damage after blizzard. Thankfully the house is okay. Our oaks suffered horribly. Since they retain their leaves throughout the winter, they couldn't manage with the three feet of wet snow and extreme winds. Probably 30-40 branches are broken and just dangling. Along the roads their are just hundreds and hundreds of trees that have been destroyed. Power is still out in many places.Talked to some locals who have lived here all their lives and they said it was the worse they had ever seen and this is an area that gets huge amounts of snow every winter. The National Guard was even called out to assist because there are many elderly who have been trapped in their homes with freezing temperatures and no electricity. They are still working in some areas to clear the roads of trees and snow. Fortunately it has stopped snowing and the weather is supposed to warm up slightly.
