Vai is coming near my neck of the woods in September. Playing in Lancaster at a small club with a great sound system.
(small place but large enough for Yngwie's wall of marshall cabinets that took up the entire stage when he came)

Those were the days...you could actually wait in line and pick out your seats,without the ticket scalpers getting all of them!

Steve Vai is coming to the Palace theatre..in Greensburg, Pa.....September 6th...nice old place...Joe has played there...:)

FYI, one of the tracks off his new album is a version of the classic "John the Revelator."   I was skeptical when I heard he was doing that tune, but it's actually really cool and well-done, imho:

I dig the mix of gospel-style vocals with heavy Vai guitar.  Interesting and very listenable.

They sent me the album a week early so I've had some quality time with it, and it's simply great.  One of the best albums I've heard in a long time... maybe since Dust Bowl.

Should also say that it's all well and good hearing Vai recorded... but seeing him live is something else. Some of the stuff he does is like "man if I tried that I'd probably break my freakin guitar!" (i.e. laying it on the floor in the middle of the stage and playing it with his huge platform boots...)

I wonder how much damage his guitars sustain on tour?! I'm guessing probably an L-O-T.

And I also wonder how many guitars Vai has.

The most recent answer to the "how many guitars does [person] have?" that I saw about SLASH was that he had 114 guitars all up and 30 of those were Gibson Les Pauls.

I mean. Vai must have a few right? He seems to pick free guitars up left right and centre!

I saw Vai live last Friday, and it was an AMAZING show.  The band was great, and he's an awesome showman in addition to being an obviously awesome player.  My wife isn't into instrumental rock guitar at all, but even she had a great time.  I think mostly because he doesn't just go up there and shred fast and heavy instrumental for two hours.  There are vocal tunes, soft ballads, heavy 7-string metal type songs, quirky "Vai" stuff, acoustic tunes.  He also has a harpist with him this tour and she covered some of the 3rd guitar parts.  It worked really well.  The rest of the band was killer, of course, and he has Bevery McLellan (who sings on "John the Revelator") open and came up to sing that tune with the band.  GREAT show.
