With Stevie coming soon I pulled out my favorite recorded solo of his, going back to his roots with Zombie Woof. He starts to crank it up at 2:30.

Vai is coming near my neck of the woods in September. Playing in Lancaster at a small club with a great sound system.
(small place but large enough for Yngwie's wall of marshall cabinets that took up the entire stage when he came)
Looking forward to seeing him then. -S
Love Steve Vai. He'll be here in Sacramento in October but I'm not sure I can make it.
This is one of my favorite vids of him:

I can remember seeing Steve with Frank Zappa...back in the day....The old Stanley Theatre downtown Pittsburgh...(Now the Benedum)
Those were the days...you could actually wait in line and pick out your seats, without the ticket scalpers getting all of them!
Steve Vai is coming to the Palace theatre..in Greensburg, Pa.....September 6th...nice old place...Joe has played there...:)
Love Vai - he's coming to Orlando in about three weeks - and I got my tickets ready. He's got a new album coming out in August as well, and the first track off of it sounds great.
A couple of years ago I attended his "Alien Guitar Secrets" clininc (which was fantastic by the way) and got Vai's autograph on my Les Paul's pickguard. Definitely one of my favorite players.
FYI, one of the tracks off his new album is a version of the classic "John the Revelator." I was skeptical when I heard he was doing that tune, but it's actually really cool and well-done, imho:

I dig the mix of gospel-style vocals with heavy Vai guitar. Interesting and very listenable.

Interesting...yes...listenable more than once...not so sure!
I like it, I'll say it! Thanks for posting that Zeyer.
Seen him a few times...always a crazy show....sometimes just too many dull solo spots.
I'm into the Bad Horsie side of it....really diggin that new track!
They sent me the album a week early so I've had some quality time with it, and it's simply great. One of the best albums I've heard in a long time... maybe since Dust Bowl.
late to the party. not really a big fan but definitely appreciate his talent. Frank is not easy to play, I like the progressive, jazz influenced stuff. He is very versatile, here with Mike Stern in studio. Mike is doing all the guitars and Steve is playing electric sitar. Steve's solo kicks in at about 3:55 if you want to skip ahead. Will have to listen more to the new one before I buy it.

Updated Vai Rig Rundown...with Rebecca Dirks!
The cover of John the Revelator is the best thing he's done since the Real Illusions: Reflections album.
In between this and that all his stuff has been mostly orchestra + guitar. And it takes a lot of skill and such to write the stuff that he's written but it wasn't to my taste, and IMO, didn't work.
So that cover is a welcome change.
Should also say that it's all well and good hearing Vai recorded... but seeing him live is something else. Some of the stuff he does is like "man if I tried that I'd probably break my freakin guitar!" (i.e. laying it on the floor in the middle of the stage and playing it with his huge platform boots...)
I wonder how much damage his guitars sustain on tour?! I'm guessing probably an L-O-T.
And I also wonder how many guitars Vai has.
The most recent answer to the "how many guitars does [person] have?" that I saw about SLASH was that he had 114 guitars all up and 30 of those were Gibson Les Pauls.
I mean. Vai must have a few right? He seems to pick free guitars up left right and centre!
He says how many he owns in the video. Link is above.
I saw Vai live last Friday, and it was an AMAZING show. The band was great, and he's an awesome showman in addition to being an obviously awesome player. My wife isn't into instrumental rock guitar at all, but even she had a great time. I think mostly because he doesn't just go up there and shred fast and heavy instrumental for two hours. There are vocal tunes, soft ballads, heavy 7-string metal type songs, quirky "Vai" stuff, acoustic tunes. He also has a harpist with him this tour and she covered some of the 3rd guitar parts. It worked really well. The rest of the band was killer, of course, and he has Bevery McLellan (who sings on "John the Revelator") open and came up to sing that tune with the band. GREAT show.

Ive been watching the set list since I'll be seeing him in October...still no "Stevie's Spanking", dammit!
Vai's new solo album is really, really cool - but it's kind of like Glenn Hughes, if you don't already dig him, you won't dig this. He's also incredible on Highway Star w/Glenn, coincidentally, on the new Re-Machined tribute record. I spoke with producer Fabrizio Grossi about the track:
