Re: Anyone for Tennis ?

Andy had a great chance to get even at 3-3 in that 6th game of the third set. It was actually 10 deuces that they went to, he had multiple points he should have won to keep Roger from the service break. Instead of going 3-3, it went 4-2 and I saw the beginning of the end for Murray. The finish could have gone a different way if Andy wins that one game.

Federer put on a CLINIC. He's my favorite active player, but I was amazed at so many of his shots that after a while I was amazed at how amazed I was. He has every tool in his toolbox, and they all worked flawlessly!

Nothing against Andy, and given this being the year of Britain with the Olympics and all, not to mention the 70+ year drought for the Brits at their own tournament, I'd have been fine if he won, too. But Federer looked like Superman out there. No one could have beaten him.

Also, both were class acts after the match. Andy's tearful "I'm getting closer!" was just the right sentiment, when it was so obvious he felt he had let his country down. He didn't. And Federer saying Andy has at least one major in him was a good encouragement for him. I'm sure Andy will continue to improve under Lendl's guidance.

Now, can't wait for the Olympics!

@RickB - Ohhh... a little harsh ! - Andy is ranked in the top 4/5 in the world at the moment.

Agree with Tres - the game might have changed if Andy pulled off the third set - he had the chances...  now he has to pick himself up for the Olympics!

..and the drought will continue until the relevant body do something about engaging ordinary kids with the sport, - I am sorry to say that as an Englishman it does not surprise me at all that the drought has been so long. - Personal experience of taking my two into our local tennis club was enough to never return again, - and there are plenty of other sports that they now compete in at a reasonable standard instead; swimming, horse riding, football and hockey.

You can see why Murray is the player he is; because of his mother. Until sports governing bodies get their beds out of their backsides and stop congratulating themselves on a poor job then things will never change. Rant over.

1 Federer, Roger (SUI)         11,075
2 Djokovic, Novak (SRB)         11,000
3 Nadal, Rafael (ESP)           8,905
4 Murray, Andy (GBR)           7,460
5 Ferrer, David (ESP)           5,430
6 Tsonga, Jo-Wilfried (FRA)     5,230

AS you can see, there is now a huge gap between the top two and Nadal, and equally large gaps between 3rd and 4th, and 4th and 5th. I don't see the positions of Murray, Ferrer and Tsonga changing while the top three remain active. The gulf is simply too great, but the rest of the season should provide a wonderful battle between Fed and Djoko for top spot.

Re: Anyone for Tennis ?

Maybe a bit harsh but Federer will join the list of players who totally dominated for a long stretch. Borg comes to mind where there were a few players that could give him a bit of a match but he always won. No diss on Andy, he's just not up to that level. The outcome was obvious in the 4th set. He had no answers, and his body language said it all. Olympics give him a chance to reassess and figure out a way, if there is one.

Re: Anyone for Tennis ?

Fans of orgasmic ladies tennis should make sure not to miss Friday's semi between Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka at the US Open.

(concert ear plugs should do the trick) lol

I'd also like to voice my appreciation for Andy Roddick, who has just retired after losing to Del Potro in the last 16. I've always enjoyed watching Andy play and he's been a credit to the sport!

That is going to be the hardest to pick this year of all years. How would they even prepare a shortlist. Congratulations to Andy Murray.

Because it's been Olympic year - I thing the BBC will have to cut it into 3 sections , Olympic Personality, Paralympic, Overall Sports personality.
Would be fitting to hold it back in the Olympic Stadium - weather permitting!

Andy, now has the confidence, strength and ability - and the measure of the top 4/5 players in the world - beating the FED in the semi, in a major is testament. He just needs the belief to do it again ... now his monkey is off his back.

Re: Anyone for Tennis ?

wow, Raffy goes down in flames first match, wish I had seen it. If he still wasn't 100% then he should not have signed up to play it. Or, maybe he didn't want to play it in the first place but felt he had to do it for the fans.

I watched it ! Rafa wasn't 100% in my view - but **## happens...

Match of the Day: Steve Darcis def. [5] Rafael Nadal 7-6(5), 7-6(8), 6-4
Back came Rafael Nadal to Wimbledon after his shock loss to Lukas Rosol a year ago, and out he went even faster this time, losing to Steve Darcis in the opening round of a major for the first time in his career. It was a stunning display from Darcis, the world No.135 who had won just one other match in his career at the All England Club. But the Belgian journeyman delivered the goods at age 29 by scurrying, slicing and playing a defensive brand of tennis that capitalised on what appeared to be a hobbled state for the world No.5. Nadal becomes the first Roland Garros title holder to go down in the opening round of Wimbledon since Gustavo Kuerten did so in 1997. A Darcis-Roger Federer quarterfinal, anyone? Hey, stranger things have happened...

Re: Anyone for Tennis ?

WTH is going on over there today? really wacky day, Roger and Maria both beaten by nobodys and more injuries leading to withdrawal. I don't think it's the grass, it's pretty much the same every year. only Andy brought some semblance of order by winning his match, even though he lost 11 games.
