Re: Greatest songwriters of all time??
Since I missed out on this the first time around, aside from the obvious, Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Dylan, Elton/Taupin, I'd like to add Johnny Cash and Rodney Crowell.

Lennon/McCartney. Of the two, it's McCartney.

Paul, "I'm a lover".
John "I'm a fighter".
Simplest way I can sum these two up. I didn't realize as a kid listening to them that if Paul was singing it was his song and if John sang it was his, it was simply The Beatles. Things were pretty black & white with these two and then there was George!

For me, Tom Waits is a prolific and amazing song writer; also Neil Young and Warren Haynes. Must recognize McCartney and Lennon as well. I saw Paul in Dallas a couple of years ago. He had a great show and what a trip back in time!

They were a great team, but I prefer Lennon's solo career...McCartney is a bit too "pop" for me.
Its hard to argue against Lennon-McCartney.So many great writers.I gues one taste plays a role in picking.Ill go with Jagger-Richards,Pete Townsend,Muddy Waters,Page-Plant-Jones,Jim Crotchie,Paul Simon. As far as Joe goes.I think he is and has beeen an excellent songwriter.Underated even. I would say give him some more time he may suprise even more!
Great Topic! Laura Nero was the first to come to mind.
I haven't read every post, but in addition to Laura Nyro there's Karla Bonoff, Natalie Merchant, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and (of course) Carole King...
talk about resurrecting a topic.... would like to add John Hiatt in the mix.
I like this topic to point out that great "guitar player" is different than "great songwriter"
For example
Tom Petty
Bob Dylan
Bruce Springsteen
... good song writers. Fact that they play guitar in their songs doesn't make them great guitar players. I don't like giving the Beatles credit for being greatest guitar players, but their songwriting abilities cannot be denied. This in my ever so humble opinion.
It's a little like my obsessive compulsive distinction between a "musician" and a "guitar player." Guitar players only play guitar. Musicians could make an instrument out of anything... and likely can play multiple instruments proficiently. Again, those two terms are often swapped in normal conversation, and my distinction is merely just another snobby opinion.
That said, let me point out Prince... totally underrated guitar great/ and one of the greatest songwriters of the 1980's
Hard to believe no props yet for Roger Waters.
