Re: The Football Topic

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to come to the same conclusion as the bookies, that Spain and Germany are the favorites, followed by Holland, France, England, Italy and Portugal with increasing odds.

If Spain can finally score some goals, they must be nailed on, since a large part of their team consists of players who have rightly dominated world football for years now. On recent history though, it's a biggish 'if'.

I am extremely somber about Dutch chances. Holland will be need a lot of luck, or some outstanding performances from one or more of the players who can turn a game on their own - Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, Van der Vaart. Sadly, these players rarely show their club form for their country. Van der Vaart is very much second string to Sneijder and will rarely, if ever,  be on the pitch at the same time. Huntelaar, who has been scoring goals for fun for the national team for years now, is second string to Van Persie as striker. The two can't play together. Van Marwijk, whom every Dutch fan I know would like to see the back of sooner rather than later, insists on playing De Jong and Van Bommel (Marwijk's son-in-law) as a pair of defensive mids. Sadly, they are useless in the build-up, and Van Bommel is over the top.

A poll on my Ajax forum showed that 74% did not expect Holland to qualify from the group! I have to admit, that astounded me. Potentially, Holland have a very good side, certainly one capable of winning if the right players are picked and play well. However, based on recent form and results, and on the manager's habits, we fear the worst.

There's bound to be some dark horse surprise team, and I don't mean England! big_smile The French can't really be considered 'dark horses', but they could go further than many think, imo. So could Croatia - maybe. wink

I will be supporting Holland, but with no great hopes. I will, therefore,  not be surprised if things go t*ts up. I will happily support any team that plays attractive, attacking football, which rules out quite a few for starters. big_smile So, Spain or Germany for me, with a personal preference for Spain, due mainly to their Barca players.

Above all, let's hope for no controversy, either on or off the pitch.

A nice article with interview of the great Ukranian striker Andriy Shevchenko, feared at his best but fading now. One last game for the country before he looks down the road. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/07/sport … .html?_r=1

Fat chance George. I see the headlines are already "Rascism" after the Dutch teams black player contigent were racially abused during a training session the day before the start.

An ignominious beginning. Van Bommel was forced to lead the players to the other side of the stadium to continue and has subsequently been fairly forthright in his comments about UEFA's reaction to the incident.

This won't be the last time either. It may be the spectacle overcomes the controversy or the incidents are swept under the carpet, but the fact remains UEFA have taken a HUGE risk in awarding the comptition to 2 countries with a poor record against rascism in all its forms.

I still can't fathom how after 'only' 70 years a country like Poland can be a cradle of fascism with Nazi tendencies given what went on there during German occupation.

Still lets not go political. The issue here is classic UEFA/FIFA ignorance, arrogantly believing that football can cure all the worlds ill's and educate the fanatically ignorant.

If this competition can go off without at least one team packing up and going home in protest then that will be a triumph.

Platini's interview with (I think) a BBC reporter was a disgrace, when asked if he or UEFA were in any way responsible should rascist issues arise his reply was aggressive asking the reporter "are you serious"? This constant refusal to take responsibility for their own decisions and the implications of those decisions just adds fuel to the fire.

There is another issue with the Ukraine Government locking up an opposition leader, - all a bit of a mess for UEFA really.

Re: The Football Topic

I used to have fair bit of respect for Platini when he got into the job at EUFA. As a fairly recent ex-pro of some integrity I thought he would be someone to get the officialdom back on track.

The commercial spending rules he wants to enforce I like, but he is also very reactionary and very very arrogant.

He is one against technology in football and he also is one who seeks to use football as some sort of magic wand for all ill's.

He will defend EUFA's decisions on all things to the very end, whether they be right or wrong. Politician and very French. Thats two things against him straight off!

Re: The Football Topic

I think the Spanish referee was trying to claw back some funds from the Greeks this afternoon smile Somebody needs to tell him that fines from his bookings and sending offs do not go back to Spanish banks!.... oops, politically incentive joke... I could not resist!

Russia up 4-1 as I type this, - could be a good outside bet for taking the cup perhaps?

ps I am expecting nothing out of England, - I just want to see good football don't care who from!

That Spanish ref was a disgrace. Russia looked pretty impressive, especially Arshavin. I hope to see Sharapova win in two sets, after the queen's stage at the Dauphine, and before Holland kick off. tongue

'Football Blues' by Bobby Charles, with Sonny Landreth on guitar and Dr. John on piano. cool

And 27 (or so) views of the two greatest Dutch WC/EC goals. Any real fan of the game will know which goals these are. wink

Holland really have to beat the Danes if they expect to get out of the group.

Re: The Football Topic

Well, the Holland game pretty much went as I had anticipated in my previous post here. The manager's ridiculous, downright wrong tactics and team selection will ensure that Holland do not qualify from the group. Almost all of my Dutch friends hope (like I do) that this will actually happen so that Van Marwijk quickly gets fired after the debacle.

The whole country sees that playing two DM's is ridiculous, especially when one of them is Van Bommel, his son-in-law, who is too old and too slow and useless in any attacking sense. The whole country also sees that Van Persie fails every time he's played as the deep striker, a position that should be Huntelaar's. Meanwhile, we all have to gnash our teeth in frustration because van Marwijk doesn't see the obvious, and insists on sticking with his 4-2-3-1 'system'. (Oh for the head-banging smilie!)

I'll be very interested to see what a Rooney-less England can do against France today, though to be honest, I fear the worst.

Re: The Football Topic

At least it looks like an interesting championship. Even Spain didn´t look for me like a clear favorite yesterday. Not to talk about the Germans in the first game (in fact all the last games). Well, we´ll see clearer soon. Wednesday (I have to do an evening group)I´ll send my clients home very early!!

Re: The Football Topic

I love the way (i think) all of us are so negative about our own team... It is encouraging to read that it is not only us Brit's (England fans, Scots are always on the up before a game, it is after that the reality sinks in) that are glass half empty when it comes to footie.

Shame about the Irish score last night, thought they played well in parts of the game, - felt sorry for Shay Given he has had a hard couple of years after being (IMO) one of the world's best.

Re: The Football Topic

Finally, a game worthy of a major championship, a game that made me smile, complete with its own fairy tale! Andrei Shevchenko, 'Sheva', the Ukraine's biggest football star and hero, scored both the equalizer and the winner against Sweden! Every true fan is happy, because Sheva is one of the few gentlemen of the game, a player who never cheated, and who at almost 36 is playing his last tournament !

England were counting on three points against this Ukraine side... big_smile ....they're gonna have to work real hard for them.
