Enjoy, and excuse the dodgy camera work, I'm not bloody Spielberg you know smile

Thanks for that Mr Spielberg JR.
He didn't play that guitar in Belgium, so I'm glad you posted your vid.
Jim is a real nice guy with some real good looking guitars that sound fat and fine.
And he plays that kind of music that goes straight into the bones and shake them well (and cameras too). Fine low down dirty Texas blues.

Re: Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat UK and Belgium Dates

George, I'm glad I'll be at home the next 2 days to watch your vids.
Have seen you filmed one very special:

Re: Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat UK and Belgium Dates

Well about a year ago in a small bagel café in Amsterdam I had a CD thrust into my hand by our good friend Cathy with instructions to “check this guy out – I think you’ll like him” . The CD was “Tijuana Bible” and Cathy turned out to be right, and 12 months down the road Mrs Icon and I end up in a small village hall in Yorkshire with another good friend, Tripsy, to witness our first Jim Suhler and Monkeybeat gig.

What a great night we had! Hats off to the Bronte Blues Club (BBC) who it seems have a strong membership and regularly sell out the venue, and attract some pretty well known names, despite a capacity of only 120 or so. With Jim in mind, they promoted the gig as “Texas Night” , with free shots of Tequila for anyone turning up in Western dress , and the support band, the BBC5, opened with a set of Blues songs with Texas connections.

Jim and his band certainly didn’t disappoint and gave us a great set – opening with “My Morning Prayer” and “Deja Blue”, before cranking up the tempo with the foot tapping slide boogie “Scattergun”. Where we went from there I can’t recall exactly, but I do remember a superb version of “Every Dog Has His day”, and the tale about how the band had played that afternoon in the local primary school where he suddenly realised how inappropriate much of the band’s material was for such a young audience. “With that in mind here’s a song from Tijuana Bible, called Mexicali Run, which is about drug running across the Mexican border”.  lol

Other tracks from Tijuana Bible included a superb version of the title track, along with “Border Rock”, and Jim’s tribute to Lightning Hopkins, “Po’ Lightnin’”.  For me the highlight of the evening was Jim’s tribute to another hero, Rory Gallagher, with “Restless Soul” and “Bullfrog Blues” which featured some great slide playing, and saw Jim leaving the stage and standing on one group’s table to play. Great fun!

Hopefully Jim will be back on this side of the pond again soon with his band. Don’t miss him!

Photos to follow.

Ian

Not wanting to steal Tripsy's thunder, but I've just seen her video of "Restless Soul" and "Bullfrog Blues" on Youtube, and thought it really needed sharing.  cool

Re: Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat UK and Belgium Dates

Hi Folks!
Big thanks to Icon for contacting me about the gig. I didn't realise that the band were playing so close to me and we had a great night. I was a little dubious when Ian told me that the club was having a Texan theme.....just had to check out the web site to make sure he wasn't winding me up before donning my check shirt and cowboy boots. My outfit couldn't compete with Ian and Maxx's though....they both had hats and Maxx even had a poncho but my effort was just about good enough to merit the free shot of tequilla  lol

The Bronte Blues Club is a friendly, cosy venue in a small village hall and as Ian says it has a very strong membership and 'outsiders' are lucky to get tickets. When we got there we managed to get seats right at the front albeit almost right under the PA....somebody actually came over to us and considerately offered us earplugs......which I didn't actually need because the volume level was just right.

Jim and the guys played a good set and even though I am not very familiar with their music I really enjoyed it......good solid Texan blues with the addition of the accordian from Shawn which worked well I thought.

After the gig we did get a chance to speak to the band members and get autographs etc. They were really friendly and Jim remembered George from Belgium smile

The Rory Gallagher tribute was fantastic....I was taping and was worried I would run out of tape before the end but I just made it. It's quite amazing just how many times that has happened to me....really fluky!  tongue

I'll definitely look out for this band in the future

Yeah, well she may have 'handed' it to you, but I did all the hard work like copying and writing small letters and what thanks do I get?  roll

Of course, you know I'm just foolin' with you.  wink  Delighted that you enjoyed this great little band as much as I did. I also particularly liked the opening medley and the way he did Rory's 'Religion' when I saw him. It seems that he has numerous Rory songs in his repertoire, which will please Annelies even more!

Here's a nice little anecdote I got from Jim. You know that Joe plays guitar on 'Deep water'. Apparently, Joe was as sick as a dog when he was scheduled to come and lay down his track, but nevertheless came and gave it his all, and refused to take any money from Jim. Jim calls him "a prince".  tongue

I wonder how many new fans Jim has attracted through this one little connection to Bonaworld?

Hey Jim (Moods), Mr Suhler wants his flashlight back! smile

Great to see him and his band in Carlisle and grab a few words afterwards! smile

I hope it's nothing too serious Walter, and wish you a speedy recovery! Such a shame we won't get to see you in Mol. Cathy can have your seat now. big_smile

All the best for your operation, Walter. Hope to see you on the road again very soon.
I plan to make a trip to Mol but depends how long I have to work. So, maybe we see us, Cathy and George.

Any plans to see Beth Hart? She'll give a concert on 8 July @ Burg Wilhelmstein in Würselen (near Aachen). A real nice open air theatre with a great acoustic.
