Re: Anthony Gomes...Feedback

I like funky music.  I like gospel and soul.  Yes he's pretty.  Watched him ruin a video that he did with Ana Popovic, mugging and acting stupid, been disgusted with that ever since...kinda shallow of me, I reckon, but I don't like that.

I wouldn't go see him without giving a listen to his new blues CD first.  In all fairness, if that is done well, I MIGHT change my mind.

Doc, I'm sure you would enjoy yourself just diggin' Scot Sutherland bringin' it from the bottoms. If you go and meet Scot, thump a peace sign over your heart and tell him V-Town Baby. After he's done chucklin' tell him J Dawg says howdy.

Re: Anthony Gomes...Feedback

A long time ago, I saw Anthony play a small blues bar (since defunct) where nobody but myself and some friends had shown up to see him.  We had a blast, and Anthony was damn glad to see us.  That was back before the cowboy gospel phase, right around when Unity was out.  I wouldn't count being able to sing like a baptist preacher leading the choir as a bad thing, but that's my opinion.

He used to go to the same vocal coach a buddy of mine did, way back when.  She said he had one of the finest sets of pipes she ever had the pleasure of hearing.

I say go see the man, and form your own opinion of him live.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

I agree wholeheartedly. He has an amazing voice in my opinion. Especially now. He was getting a bite to eat in my restaurant, and a song from Blues In Technicolor came on, and he was like, "Man, I hate my singing on this record." And he got to talking about how hard he has worked on his voice. And I'll tell you, he can flat out sing now. Love his voice. With him, it's like Joe, the guitar playing and the singing are a package deal as far as I'm concerned.

Wow Don, um, maybe 6-7 years ago.  I'm sure it was just me.  If memory serves the crowd was in to it. It's a silly little thing, but it bothered me because I thought it was beneath him, wrong time, disrespectful, something weird, I dunno.  Y'all might say that's just Anthony...and you'd probably be right.

A lot can change over time and ANYBODY can have a bad night, so it's not a position I would defend strongly.  If Deez says he's working it...  smile  I'd still like to listen to the the new one.

I love alot of his lyrics too. will write more after I listen more

Haven't picked up a copy yet, but can already tell this is Anthony returning to the early form I liked.  I like Room 414, but it's too short.  And "One Last Time" is bound to be great live.

Thanks Chris, listened to that and several others.  Immediately I thought of Eric Clapton in the Phil Collins days.  Somewhat Derek and the Dominoes, but not that moving.  Somebody told me it was back to the blues for Up to Zero, I hardly think so.  To me that stuff would be killer live and big fun to play (who's gonna sing that? whoa) but not so great on the CD.

I agree he sings his arse off.

It's OK.  I still don't know why some players posturing bothers me and some don't.  Where's my mirror? lol
