Topic: "You & Me" in the wilderness!
I recently returned from a wilderness canoe trip in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. No motors allowed, you basically pack everything in with you, canoe to where you're going, including portaging all your gear between lakes. My 21 year old daughter and I have 3 packs that weigh about 60 lbs. each, a 45 lb. canoe, and miscellaneous fishing gear, life jackets, paddles, etc.
We canoe about 15 miles the first day and portage over a mile (it takes two trips to get across portages due to the amount of gear we have). On our third day we are on the move again, to a different lake. We know we have a tough day ahead of us: another 15 miles of paddling and almost 3 miles of portages. We canoe about 5 miles and reach the first portage with a little apprehension: 2/3 of a mile with a 100 foot rise over the first half of the portage. Very rocky, tough footing due to two days of rain.
I help my daughter get one of the packs on her back and I flip the canoe up onto my shoulders and we set off. I take about 20 steps when the sounds of "High Water Everywhere" come to me from just up ahead. I learn that (unbeknownst to me) my daughter had loaded the entire "You & Me" cd onto her phone, saving it for that moment.
What a great surprise, and talk about being energized with a shot of adrenaline! That portage wasn't simple, but it was definitely enjoyable and a memory I'll never forget.
