Topic: Songs that are relative to us

This popped in my head a few days ago...I was listening to "Cats in The Cradle" by Harry Chapin, and I found the lyrics oddly resembled my relationship with my father as a young child growing up.....It turns out that I found out more facts of my father later in life that were quite disturbing...... I never realized what a blessing the man was NOT around....it seems that our childhood shapes us in so many ways as an adult, but you never realize how much until the years carry on.....I would have had to change some lyrics to...."My boy was not like me, he knew right from wrong he was never going to be like me"

Would anyone care to chime in a song or songs that gave you that similiar feelings of our lifes.....not particular to a parent, but any story......there are plenty more, but I'll wait for your stories, if you care to share them....please, no judgements on anyone for their experiences

Re: Songs that are relative to us

Shred,

Reading your post I wonder if my son shares your feelings.  I pray he doesn't.  My Dad didn't have much time for any of us kids growing up.  It didn't bother me, but it did my brother.

Jim Croce wrote some great songs, he passed on much to early..."Time in a bottle"...."Operator"....bring back some good memories as well....I can relate to so much of his music...as far as a relationship with our Fathers, that was life changing for me...I can vividly remember looking out the window as a 9 year old boy waiting for my father to drive up....he had promised me he would....he lived In South Carolina, us in California....it never happened..... this young boy would look out that window everyday for weeks....as I got older, the truth of the man was told to me by my older siblings, it was a good thing he wasnt around, quite a violent person....back to the topic, I need to find more songs that stir some good memories

Re: Songs that are relative to us

Sorry bout that "cradle" Sis, each song can meen so much to one and different to another....really weird that you would mention "dont fear the reaper", that song brought me as close to suicide as anything in life....easy....I'm fine with the song these days, it just was a time in my life when i thought there was no hope, I was 18 and knew NOTHING about life....hell the stuff I'm going through with my wife now trumps that..... I guess you "learn" the game of life as you age....cool story bout the hubby, makes the hairs on my neck itchy....I got another song that reminds me of my mom, but I cant recall that 60s tune, Andre actually responded once to the song and knew it well.....damn dementia lol

Re: Songs that are relative to us

Hey Shred,

My husband often refers to Cats in the Cradle, (as a concept of time) it is a powerful & sad song.  He had a great relationship with his dad who recently passed away at 90 years old. Life has some simple cruelties that are time related, since I also have had a good relationship with my parents this song always make me think things like...when parents are really working hard just to make ends meet and there simply aren't enough hours in the day, then when they retire, their kids are in the work mode with young kids and they don't always have enough time to spend with their parents. Its a vicious cycle in some ways.

Jim Croce was from my area. A friend of mine lived in his former dorm room sophomore year at college, Jim had carved his name in the wood and the school had a little tribute to him in one of the dining halls. Jim's songs have great lyrics, my hubby plays his songs on his acoustic guitar, I like listening to them. Back to the control of time...Time In a Bottle, is another powerful song. I often say I think time is the most precious commodity, sometimes I think there should be 8 days a week like that Beatle song. On the 8th day nothing is allowed to get added to your TO DO list, its like a catch up day, nothing bad ever happens on the 8th day of the week and you control every minute. wink

Anyway, unfortunately not every person makes a good parent and some people don't deserve to be a parent.

Re: Songs that are relative to us

As I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum, "Mountain Time" gets to me not only because it is beautifully played, but also because the lyrics put me in mind of a bittersweet memory...

Others that will have the same effect (not gonna tell the stories, though...your couch isn't comfortable enough!  wink ):

  • Bonnie Raitt's live version of "Dimming of the Day" on Road Tested

  • Vince Gill's "Trying to Get Over You" on I Still Believe in You

  • Third Eye Blind's "Jumper" on Third Eye Blind

  • Kol Simcha's "Lullaby for Piano, Clarinet, and Strings" on Klezmer Soul

  • Mazzy Star's "Into Dust" on So Tonight That I Might See

  • Joan Osbourne's live version of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted?" on Standing in the Shadows of Motown

  • Alan Jackson's "Here in the Real World" on Here in the Real World

  • R.E.M.'s "The Flowers of Guatemala" on Lifes Rich Pageant

  • Ry Cooder's "Feelin' Bad Blues" on the Crossroads movie soundtrack

Mott the Hoople "Your Own Backyard"

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Songs that are relative to us

There's a topic I started a while back about songs that took you back to a specific place and time...similar, but not the same. You're talking about songs that relate directly to something going on in your life.
Gregg Allman's song "Queen of Hearts" from his Laid Back album was the first one I thought of...seemed to really strike home after a major conflict with a close friend of mine...the words "and most all your would be friends...turn out so phony" rang out in my head for weeks.

"Rock ON & Keep the Faith"

Re: Songs that are relative to us

In light of the rollercoaster ride that was Mother's Day this past weekend, I'd say Work No More - Walter Trout/Relentless.

Re: Songs that are relative to us

The song AMY by Pure Prairie League.I had a girlfriend of the same name when that song was popular.Everytime I hear the song again I think of those times.

I recall as a kid, might have been one of the first songs on radio I got hooked on.Indian Lake by the Cowsills.I was on vacation with the family and remember them letting me  play the juke box in the resturant many times.I'm sure they must have gotten real tired of that ,but they let me do it a lot .

Another "classic". The only way to listen to this is to precede it with Falling In & Out Of Love, and then into Amy. Loved Pure Prarie League. Hung out with Larry Goshorn here in Cali in the early '80's. Great bunch of guys from the "Buckeye State".
