Topic: KWS 7/20 Shoreline Amp. Mtn. View, CA

Went to KSAN or 107.7 The Bone's (SF) annual listener appreciation concert last night in the South Bay. The line up was Lynyrd Skynyrd, KWS, Pat Travers, and Laidlaw all for $10.77 for lawn seating, not a bad deal. KWS stole the show IMO, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but Skynyrd was a bit flatter than I've seen them in awhile. I didn't stay for their entire set due to the fact that if you leave this venue after the complete show it can take 1-2 hrs. to reach the freeway on ramp only a quarter mile away. KWS had Chis Layton playin' drums which is a great addition to his sound. KWS had some competition from an AC/DC tribute band called Long Gon Bon who were playin' on an auxiliary stage outside the main stage area as their sets overlapped a bit. The Boneheads as the listeners are known as love their AC/DC and were headbangin' with Long Gon Bon even as Kenny was getting into his set. Skynyrd promised their best show ever to make up for cancelling at the last minute last year when Johnny Van Zant had to be rushed to Stanford Med Center to have his appendix removed, unfortunately they didn't quite deliver, but I still love 'em!!!

What the hell about telling us bout Patrick Henry Travers? One of my all time favs to kick my a$$. Pat has been on the road for about 30 years, and has not disappointed onece in my book.

The Dawg is just tired, I sent him an E-mail, he forgot to respond to some of it. Nobody gigs more than that dude. He'll answer you, in the meantime, I tell you bout the acoustic set he did in Sac town, Pat put on a amazing show , told some funny stories about those 30 years. When "boom boom" was played to end the show, nobody was ready to go home. When he first came out, I said to my brother "damn he looks likes Neil Young without all the wear and tear", and he is probably close in age.

Sorry Ron, Pat kicked butt too, but just like when Laidlaw opened the show, most of the people weren't in their seats yet. Pat had to compete with a bikini contest, which happened to include a small trampoline and bikinis made of floss. Even though I had backstage access at the side stage where I was having some philosophical conversation with a few of the contestants I did catch the last 2/3rds of Pat's set. Just like the last show of Pat's I went to 2 yrs. ago it was his side guitarist who blew me away with his riffs. I don't recall his name, but talked with him at the gig. He plays a PRS as does Pat. I think they may have a contract deal with PRS. Pat finally had enough fans in place to close with a rousing audience participation of Boom Boom Out Go The Lights!!!!! Nothing seemed to be running on time at this gig. The venue isn't high on anybody I knows list of places to see live concerts. It's amazing too because the Shoreline Ampitheatre was Bill Grahams baby that he built from the ground up, but it's never run too smoothly.

J Dawg, Chris Layton is one solid drummer for sure.  Saw him earlier this year with KWS and he lays it down with the best of them.  Did KWS have any of the old timers with him from the 10 days out album?  Going to have check out Pat Travers if he ever comes around here...

DAWG, when I saw em in Memphis, Kenny had a friend he grew up with in Shreveport step in on a few songs, that cat could shred, I cant remember his name, I know there were  a few others on the forum that were there, maybe they know his name. The 20 minute version of "voo doo chile" is the best I've seen since SRV, he was on fire!There was a young lady that kept flashing Kenny, my nephew said " damn, those must have cost a lot of money"...lol...

He used to play with Pat's former drummer & bass player for several years, Eric Frates & Rick Navarro, a couple of very talented young guys from the Orlando, FL area.  I've only seen Kirk in the line-up a few times but it was great to see him rock the old Pat Thrall double-leads, and I just LOVE the gorgeous blue PRS Private Stock I've witnessed him play.  Seems like a nice guy from the brief convo I had with him.

Can't wait for Pat & the boys to do a Mid-Atlantic date...closest so far is NYC :-(

Thanks Carl, that's him alright. Kirk absolutely grabs my attention when I see him with Pat. What in the name of God is that youtube clip all about on Kirk's Myspace????  Whoa!!! that's got to be a stab at humor!!!

J DAWG - if it was 2005, the guitar player could've been Shaun - he was on the tour for The Place You're In. His myspace band is there somewhere - he is from Mass. too.

When I saw him play with KWS, he had an Eric Clapton Exlporer with the back side rounded like a strat or a Dean Cadillac and a reverse hockey puck headstock... it was  a Gibson though- I asked him! The serial number was ECsomething...
