Really nice tasteful playing there... nice to see some soulful blues soloing. Notice your pups buzz a lot, hate it when mine do that!

Here's a song which I recorded a few weeks ago with my mate. Story is, I gave myself a stupid task for college. We have a project going on where you pick an objective, then have a deadline to achieve it. I gave myself the task of writing, recording and mixing an original song. Now the latter two parts are easy, seeing as I've been doing both for a couple of years. However writing songs is a bit more difficult. Needless to say I came up with a stupidly difficult song to play, went to record it and found out that it was near impossible for me.

I went home and realised I had just over a month until my project was due in. So I spent the next 5 hours on my guitar coming up with riffs, until I got something which I really liked. Quickly came up with some admittedly bad lyrics, then recorded a basic acoustic version on to my computer so I could remember it tomorrow.

Tomorrow came and I rang up my mate who has a makeshift recording studio. His name's Ash, and is one of the best drummers I have ever seen, insane. Says to him I got a new song which needs recording, you free today? He says yes so off I go to his house and record. Within minutes he's picked it up and we get recording. Drums were done in one take. Then we recorded everything else, guitar, bass and vocals in under 3 hours. All pretty much one or two takes apart from the vocals. Then we spent the next hour trying to mix it.

This is the fruit of our labour, not really mixed yet and the rhythm guitar needs re-doing, but I am extremely pleased with how it's turned out. Please give it a listen if you have a few spare minutes, I'd very much appreciate it.

I played everything apart from the drums and wrote it myself.

Cheers,

Tom.

Cool man that's really good I'm impressed! Only thing I would say is work on the mix a little - the lead guitar seems a little too low in the mix and also a tiny bit less overdrive in the intro would be perfect

Great playing !

Really enjoyed "Enter Sandman" with a string intro smile There are lots of fine guitars on that stage too!   Be proud wink  Cathy

Great playing !

Hey there mate, the reason the guitar in the intro sounds like that is something called phasing. Basically we recorded that bit twice, both times with 5 mics. Because the mics are at different distances from the guitar amps it takes a few more milliseconds for the sound waves to reach the mics at the back. This produces phasing which makes the guitar sound quite bad. Also because I played it twice and was quite sloppy the second time, it adds to the phasing. This will be sorted when we mix it properly.

The lead guitar has automation on it. Simply put, the volume rises and falls at points where I've set it to. I haven't got it perfect yet but again it will be sorted soon. There's a lot wrong with the mixing on this song - ring from the kick drum, vocals too loud, palm mutes not coming through very well, some nasty nasally frequencies at around 3k on the vocal track. They'll all be sorted eventually, with a bit of effort.

Also it's not mastered well, I basically whacked a compressor on it then boosted the make-up gain to around 10 or so. Very sloppily done and I shouldn't have but I wanted it to be a decent volume for SoundCloud smile

JLowther, I really liked your country pickin' video. Such a good country tone.

What kind of delay are you using to get that slapback?

Thanks a lot man ... It was just an amp simulator on Garageband on my Macbook using the default delay set at a really short time

Re: Forum players under 21

Here's an idea, why not have a little contest? Not a serious one, just in the name of fun.

Basically we each jam over the same backing track and post it up... would be very interesting to see what everybody does on it and how they approach it with regards to tone etc. Would have to be something like a standard 12-bar blues though so that we all know the chord progression.
