Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

111 Grand Prix and fianlly Nico nails it!

Well deserved victory yesterday for the Mercedes team and Nico. Shame they buggered up Michaels pitstop as the result could have been even better.

Pitstops were a themes yesterday. No doubt that if McLaren hadn't had fluffed Buttons then the last few laps could have been much more thrilling. Button with a clear track would have seen Norberts Haugs fingernails down to the quick! I think Jenson would have caught Nico, but that isn't to say that he (NIco) didn't have something in reserve. Great to see anyway that he has broken his duck finally. He is a talent and this result should see ther Merc team now pushing on.

What bets against Michael getting another victory? This result must fill him with a lot of optimism.

What of the rest? Hamilton's new low stress is paying dividends. He hasn't won yet and yet sits atop the championship. This is how WC's are won. Taking points every time out. Managing the car while he learns about it. His new low profile approach will serve him well. I see him as the most likely champion as it stands.

3 races, 3 different winners, 3 different teams. Thats what I call a good start!

...and overtaking, wheel to wheel down the straights, out-braking..... it was great to see the return of racing. I had Schumacher down for second place yesterday in our work prediction competition. He will do it again (I think).

Not just that which in itself is a brilliant achievement for Nico and the team, but also wasn't it the first time a Mercedes has been atop the podium since 1955 ?  No wonder Norbert was looking delighted, and justifiably so.

Such a thrilling race from start to finish with good old fashioned wheel to wheel racing, sometimes a bit too close for comfort.

As much as I was delighted for Nico I couldn't but help thinking Lotus should have put some new tyres on Kimi's car.  To go from a wonderful second place to fourteenth in just a couple of laps must have been soul destroying for him.  The car and him have the pace.  Now they need to get the tactics right.

But for me the highlight of the race was Mark Webber's wheelie .... in an F1 car.  Yes, you had to see it to believe it.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Yes wheel to wheel indeed. As you say Lynn some was quite near the borderline. Maldano and Grosjean must have banged wheels numerous times and I daresay Peter Sauber almost had a siezure when his two charges went at it together before the harpin.

Yes Kimi's strategy just didn't play out as they would have hoped. Massa and Vettel were also compromised although Vettel nearly made it work. Could have all been so different if they had had a safety car at some point. That would almost certainly have robbed Merc of their glory, unless Nico really had something to spare.

Good day for Stuttgart with the podium a Merc powered lock out.

Bahrain next. Lots of talking points even before the race. Its an uncomfortable situation, like the days when they used to race in SA before aparheid was over. That said of course, they've just been in China which lets face it isn't exactly 'Freedom capital' is it?

Money talks in F1.....always has......always will.

What disappoints me about these places though are the empty grandstands. I'm surprised Bernie hasn't come up with a covering for them that features thousands of faces. At least for the TV the illusion would work...........a bit like freedom really..............

Brilliant racing throughout, how long have we been waiting for that to happen in F1. All the teams that matter are very close, although Mercedes will suffer badly with hotter weather and track surfaces. Crowds will only appear in Europe and the Americas.
Still fancy Button for thew title though...

+1 on that. Much as I love the racing now, this just screams finance and not sport to me. It could come back to haunt Bernie although he does have the thickest of skins, possibly teflon.

Hmm... no one has made a comment since the race!

In the end, the race did go off smoothly, that is, if you don't count 1 protester shot dead.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Shouldn't have taken place in my opinion, however a good close race again. McLaren however must have been bad this week to have the race problems they had, just a shame Lotus could not hit the top step instead of Red Bull. Racing is always better in Europe with all the crowds. It seems wrong racing at this level in front of empty stands. Thats big finance for you.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I understand the argument on both sides. Would Shia Bahrainis be protesting if there wasn't an F1 race....well yes. But Bernie and the FIA have to accept that the race is being funded by the Government and therefore F1 is being used as a propaganda tool to assure the world everything is OK here.

It isn't, and on that basis F1 shouldn't have gone and they could have taken that decision a long time ago. But they have a contract and it is about money.

It is a terrible thing to have to say, but not enough people are dying there NOW - for Bernie and the FIA to give up their millions.

However, for stupid politicians to start jumping on the bandwagon once the whole circus is there already is just pathetic. Didn't these people have an opinion before then?

I hate politicians. I know it is ignorant to paint them all with the same brush but they make my skin crawl. Hypocrites with a punchline and thats about it.

As for the race, I found it interesting. Tactics playing a huge part while the tyre wear issue is fully understood. Vettel made pole pay off, but the Lotus tactics were nearly the better option. I wonder if it was the heat that 'switched on' Red Bull this weekend. They better hope not as once they get to Europe the weather might not do them any favours. I like how it is shaping up. If Ferrari can sort things out at the May test in Mugello it might become a 5 team fight at the sharp end. Split strategies......team orders.....yeehaaa.

Nico....dangerous driving? I didn't think so. Both times Nico was out to the right first and took up his line for the next right hander. Alonso wasn't alongside (IMHO) and as such shouldn't be left room. Both he and Hamilton chose to go out there. Hamilton stayed out there to get the pass and even could have been penalised for passing off the track. Fernando was annoyed but I don't think Nico was obliged to allow him down the outside there.

Doesn't look like a legit passing place for me if you have to go off the circuit to do it..........

Barcelona next. Normally that is a crap procession becos they all know it so well. Lets hope that Pirelli make all that circuit knowledge useless and that the rain in Spain fally mainly on the circuit!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I hear everyone on the ethics of racing in Bahrain, but someone told me a major golf tournament  happened there recently, and not a word was mentioned in the press or anywhere.Icould be wrong-and just a LITTLE lazy-as i haven't followed this line of enquiry up,but,if it did.....? I DO agree that Bernie is a shrewd money-maker,he HAS done a lot to bring F1 along, doesn't say anything without thinking through the conseqences and often does on purpose. Still, hasn't stopped me from going to Silverstone practically every year since '88. (roll eyes)
The Race!!! Yeah, another corker, but just HOW did Nico get away with pushing two drivers onto the outfield (for want of a better word).Surely the track is everything BETWEEN the white lines, not outside 'em!...and all four wheels, too, not just two.......

Come on you Blades!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

....and i've just re-read Hansamike's post...:)...it DIDN'T appear to be a good overtaking place (lewis and the sulky spanish one),but ,in NOT giving them room, what would've happened had they spun off on the dust and hit the wall, possibly spinning back onto the track,he surely knew they were there. Couldn't see Lewis do that against Massa and nowt being said....

Come on you Blades!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I think Nico knew they were behind and might chance their arm, but he was in front and on the full outside on the racing line. Both decided to extend that line by going outside it! These cars have pretty poor rear/side vision still. Clearly Alonso and Hamilton had a better exit off the preceeding corner thru better traction but Nico still had track position and the line.

If a wall had been there, they wouldn't have tried it! There is only one racing line and Nico was on it and in front. I would be the first to say you SHOULD leave room, but thats when you are alongside by at least half the car. Alonso certainly wasn't and Hamilton only was by extending the limits of the track.

You just can't bully people like that. " OK I'm here Nico, I've put myself in danger and now YOU have to save me". I'm not sure about the ethics of that. Hamilton and Alonso are racers - Nico too, but from the pictures I saw I thought their moves over-optimistic. If they had been a high kerb there both Alonso and Hamilton wouldn't have tried it. There isn't becos for safety reasons they don't want cars to launch on the exit of the corner. That doesn't mean you should be able to run over the line inorder to get a run on someone and then expect them to move over.

I want overtaking as much as the next person but I don't like this "let me through or we have an accident" type of stuff.

We have more overtaking than for the longest time but using the bits of the track that are not designed for it is the not the way.

I thought Nico might have been guilty of changing position twice but he wasn't. He went right to the outside of the track for his first move and then took his line on the left side for the next corner. Hard but fair.

Net result, both Hamilton and Alonso know where they stand with Nico next time. Marker laid down. Get level, you get room - anything else get stuffed, Mark Webber should write the book on it, probably call it "Aussie Rules", with Alan Jones doing the foreword.......................

Agreed!  A wonderful birthday present for Sir Frank.  Back in the early 90s Williams were the team to beat but have suffered with lack of funding over the last decade or so.  But I've always been a fan (British team and all that) so good to see them on the up again.

What a season this is turning out to be.  Five different winners from five different races.  Aside from the Williams how great to see Lotus in the top three again.  This week they got the tyre strategy right.  Kimi was pushing and gaining over 1 second a lap towards the latter part of the race.  With the tyres on Alonso's Ferrari looking to have gone close to the cliff edge, if the race had been a few more laps longer then Kimi could possibly have taken second.

But the driver of the day has to go to Lewis Hamilton who finished a brilliant eighth after starting from back of the grid.  It's easy to say he had a quicker car and therefore would be bound to despatch the back markers quite effortlessly, but it's not that easy to overtake on the Barcelona circuit.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

What a season 2012 is turning out to be!  Six different winners from six races - F1 doesn't get any better than this!  So even though predictably the Monaco GP was a rather pedestrian affair, it was still worth watching even if the first three on the podium were as per the grid line up.

Although Webber admitted his car wasn't the best, it was certainly good enough here to take the chequered flag first giving Red Bull three wins at Monaco in three successive years.  Rosberg is really maturing as a driver as his frequent podium places show and second place here, barely a second behind Webber's Red Bull, must give both him and the team a filip for the European season.  As for Alonso in his Ferrari, it wasn't expected that Ferrari would do great things early in the season but here we are six races in and Fernando is now top of the championship table.  Forza Ferrari!

It's across the pond for Canada next.  Bring it on!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I told you that it is exiting sport!!! wink Funny that Monaco becomes the most boring race so far when it was once the best! - Canada is a road circuit is n't it?

I had Grosjean down for a podium in our company sweep,- well that went wrong even before the first corner!

Always hated Monaco, always a procession won by the pole or 2nd pole position. At least Canada allows overtaking (If you don't believe it watch last year and Button again)
