I agree his (John's) blues guitar playing doesn't define him as a guitar player or come across as much of anything original, and thats fine, but it is a good thing that some people who may not have previously had an interest in Blues Music might now have an elevated curiosity in it due to hearing John play his versions of blues classics etc.. I have always thought his voice and more acoustic music have defined who he is but also I think he breathes some fresh life into older blues songs making them more appealing to a newer generation of listeners. Regardless if it were blues, jazz, funk or whatever he was doing, I think its good to broaden your musical horizons and give other things a listen. Don't have to like it, but nothing wrong in trying new things.

I agree with a number of what you said here.  For me I find him to be a more heady and technical player and actually think he has more leanings to the jazz side.  I like some of his music, but pick and choose when it comes to him.

That said, When you change and say I am going to be Blues and you are so arrogant to anoint yourself as "the only one", then bring it. He didn't and is nowhere close to doing it.

With all the blues guitarists out there, he didn't say he would do it with all these other new blues people. Just him, by himself.

And actually, I don't care for his blues because I don't get the feeling or fire from him.  It's listenable, but not gut-wrenching. I don't care for his voice either.

I actually introduce young people to Dave Meniketti.  They are blown away when they see this Rocker play with so much feeling, soul and fire and hard to beat vocals. That's just one of many including the BluesMasters.

It is good to broaden your musical horizons and that is why it is good there is a variety.  By the way, I am a prog-metal girl  I'll wait for him to crossover to that realm wink

Ha, yeah that struck me as a surprise to read that! I've never read it myself, not disputing your quote, but that is a rather bold statement! Either way, I think we both agree the guy is very talented in all aspects of music he performs. With his "jazz" chops you never know, he might be able to cross over to the prog-metal scene and pull it off.. -S

I like Mr. Mayer a lot, until he opens his mouth. Can't stand his voice, makes me want to smash stuff.

Nice to see someone else who's heard of Dave Meniketti. A veteran for sure, and he's still got it after all these years.

Re: John Mayer New Single: "Shadow Days"

More snippets today from the new album Born and Raised.  I've got to say I'm excited about this album.  It seems Mayer is a sensitive subject for those who follow the music scene.  Tabloid incidents aside, I've always felt JM a major talent in a sea of mediocrity.  The new album has very little blues, but keeps my interest with fine playing and interesting lyrics.  Some of the songs sound like they could've been included on Neil Young's Harvest and if there's a thread to the thing it's gentile back porch pickin'.  This is something to play with the top down on a summer's night.  Only 1:30 minutes for each song, but this may end up being my favorite for this year...got a feeling.

Really like the video. Also like the song too.

Re: John Mayer New Single: "Shadow Days"

I chaperoned my daughter and a friend years ago to a John Mayer concert. He is a very talented guitarist, personally I can only handle his voice in small doses, but I think he is a fantastic writer.

I cannot tell you how many times I reflect on these few lines from "Waiting On the World to Change".

"And when you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want"

Its scary how true it is, especially considering the political climate in the USA. I could also throw in a famous John Lennon line...Just Give Me the Truth! Not talking politics, just saying... wink

Im ambivalent on John Mayer, and that lyric is an example of why. 'taint nothing new. Same thing has been said and said better by Zappa, The Tubes and many others since. His playing is the same for me, very derivative and commercial. But music is taste, mine isnt the same as anyone elses.

(Came across this looking for a "Best non-JB concert experiences" thread, just my two copper pennies.)

Re: John Mayer New Single: "Shadow Days"

I see someone has started another thread about the new album and it's time to close this one.  Please indulge me though one last time here on this subject.  I was going to wait till tuesday to comment on the album, but like Rockfarmer said you can listen to the complete album on iTunes so there's no need to wait.  Mayer's music has always been what it is and ya can dig it or take a pass.  A lot of people have issues with his half-assed love affair with the blues, the tabloid stories and whatever pops in their head, but the bottom line is he's a major artist in the biz.  He's an exceptional guitarist imo and a damn good singer.  Not a bad songwriter either compared to the mediocrity swirling around us.
Not much blues on the new one, but the songs have a tight groove running through them.  The important thing is Mayer's still searching, still managing to make music that matters.
