Topic: RIP Ronnie Montrose

OMG! Just got in and saw this news on a singer friends Facebook Wall and went straight to Ronnie's site and it was confirmed. He'd battled cancer for a number of years, but not clear on what caused his passing at this point. just posted here about his DVD recording recently. Another great guitar gone.

Re: RIP Ronnie Montrose

This unbelievably sad news. I am really very very shocked.

Ronnie is often seen as a bit one dimensional because of how he came to prominence through the band with his own name. Nothing could be further than the truth.

He was a true guitar maverick, experimenting in styles and sounds throughout his career. His was another case of the 'easier path not taken'. He could have produced rock albums ad infinitum but that was just not his thing.

I rediscovered him again through his brilliant Gamma 4 release after losing track of him for many years. I'm truly saddened that such a fine player has been lost to us.

RIP Ronnie M..........but listen mate when you meet up with Gary Moore up there lets forget about all that nicked Les Paul stuff. Share the damn thing if you have to..........its over......just make heavenly music together..........

Re: RIP Ronnie Montrose

I have all of Ronnie's CDs.  From Montrose (Hagar & James versions) to Gamma, to his instrumental stuff.  I still listen to his stuff in fairly high rotation.  Saw him a couple of times with Davey Pattison.  Great innovator.  Seemed to carry a chip on his shoulder too much of his life though.  R.I.P. Ronnie.

This is shocking news.

Cancer does suck. Just went to a service yesterday for a family friend who couldn't beat it.

RIP, RM.

Cancer ....BOOOO!!!!!!

Re: RIP Ronnie Montrose

Sorry to hear this.  Ronnie Montrose was one of the original heavymetal guitar gods.

Re: RIP Ronnie Montrose

Rest in Peace Ronnie!  This is very sad news.  I only saw Ronnie twice: he opened up with Gamma for ACDC in Oct. 1980 (he stole the show), and again headlining with Gamma in Feb. 1981.  Have been looking forward to seeing him perform again ever since.  Was going to see him open for the Scorpions many years back, but the show got cancelled.  Finally touring again and have tickets to see him play twice this May.  Can't believe he is gone.  Ronnie was the 1st guitarist I saw live that absolutely floored me, and also turned me onto instrumental guitar music BIG time.  He was one of a kind.

Re: RIP Ronnie Montrose

Ouch. Montrose's debut album came out when I was a senior in high school. It was a real kick-the-doors-down, larger than life, air-guitar players dream. Sorry to see him go.

No surprise that this record was a sonic gem, when you consider it was produced by none other than Ted Templeton. Ted has produced some of my favorite (and truly best sounding) records of all time.

Re: RIP Ronnie Montrose

Damn not another one.I too loved the early Montrose.I always had their first album as a desert island disc.I had not kept up with his career though was keeping an eye out for him if he came through Chicago.
