Yea....Went to go with it then stopped.  Joe's fans are incredible.....deservedly so given Joe's amazing talent and his gracious nature....and we all do our utmost to spread the word without dangling carrots.  I would much prefer to tell others..."you have to see/listen/buy this amazing dvd/cd....it's Joe at his best"....instead of .."you have to see/listen/buy this amazing dvd/cd....but I haven't heard or watched it yet.  Really?

yeah, really?

another comment i saw on FB took umbrage with the "Check out the Best Guitarist ever" and I have to agree. this is the subject line of the email your friends will get, and is also plastered on a few other things on various joe sites etc. While i know it and believe it to be true , having listened to just about anything i can find of Joe talking, it truly does not seem like him and its being noted as a turn off by some....making him come off as having an attitude i don't think he has or has been observed publically

just saying
i don't want to be a pisser at all. i wish we could have a feedback group of some truly caring about joe to run some of this stuff thru before going live with it. again, happy to volunteer and I know others are too. not to be critical but to help make it best, you know finding another way

Sorry...another comment.  I agree with Jane's good idea of a filter group.  Joe's talent and music sells itself.  What makes Joe unique (from my experience at least) is how Jow is with his fans.  I've been very fortunate to have met him many times in the past year and a half and he's never been anything less than friendly, giving of his time, willing to sign anything, and soooo unassuming.  In comparrison.....within the past 5 mos saw Kenny W.S....who was also very nice and signed my Frat (but must by mgt instructions, address it to you...which I actually liked)......and Eric Johnson....who was also very kind for the brief moment I met him....and this wasn't his doing....it was his road mgr....who took items into the bus to be signed).  My point is, Joe is so much more than his music....it's why he has the fans he has.  It's my fear that this most recent approach will give people who don't know better a wrong impression.  So, if it's the intention to bring more fans in.....this ain't it.   (just a side note though.....from what I've seen...J&R seems to far surpass mgmt for most other artists)

Re: To Watch This Video You Must Share It First

Didn't mean to open up such a can of worms, although it's somewhat reassuring to read that many folks shared my emotional response to this partcular promotional approach.

I wouldn't rush to judgement and/or be too critical of management, the PR folks and the whole JBXP thing though. Although JB's music and work ethic are largely responsible for his success, a ton of credit must be given to management for their handling of Joe's career and their long-term vision and plan. Truth to be told there have been countless extremely talented guitarists who's careers started and ended playing taverns, or who released a record or two and then disappeared. Its taken a lot of hard work by a lot of good people behind the scenes to help JB get where he is today...but even they can't hit a home run with every idea.

The real illustrator here is that we can have discussions like this among ourselves, and voice our opinions, and not have someone swoop in and delete the thread because it's not 100% singing praise of the company line. This forum serves as an excellent filter and "Think Tank" and I'm confident the thoughts we have shared here will be noted and taken under advisement.

Re: To Watch This Video You Must Share It First

Well, I can't get this to work - just a black screen with an ad at the top for a free download that I found out is another old song that I already have.  Why would I want to share something that doesn't work?  And I am not reloading stuff on my computer to make it work - went thru that with Music Box and not doing it again.

I love the idea of a filter group, or advisory folks or whatever.  I feel like some of this stuff about "sharing" is over the top lately.  Most of us share videos on FB all the time without any encouragement, so this requiring me to share stuff to see a video is kind of insulting.  I am feeling very turned off by some of the marketing lately, and feel ike some of it could be a turn-off for certain people.  I am personally extremely turned off by people who post relentlessly on FB (and I am not just talking about Joe postings) - sometimes less is more.  If too much is shared my friends will "turn me off" and then what does that accomplish?  There has to be a happy medium.  I know Joe's people have the job of getting the word out, but sometimes there are just too many words.

Just my 2cents worth.

to be honest Stu, i am not so sure this wouldn't get deleted if it had been noticed - based on having seen other stuff get deleted, ignored and other objective evidence. I agree with what you are saying - and also the sentiment that it is still better than many other artists out there.
again not to complain but some of them have been quite rude about the feedback they get that they ask for.

FWIW as has been suggested to me, i guess i shouldn't worry about it, it will consume itself but because they advertise that place and refuse to have a link to Joe's website on JBXP, alot of fans aren't seeing anything but jbxp. it just seems like it would not take much more effort to be more respectful to Joe but maybe I am thinking about it wrong...

I just wish some more thought and consideration had been put in so we didn't have to see comments like this one on the jbxp FB page
"Love Joe but this whole JBXP thing is awful. Why do we have to share something before viewing it? All my friends and me included just see it as a cynical data mining operation and not a genuine attempt at sharing Joe's work...such a shame when it's his music that does the real talking. We are all fans so share stuff about JB on Fb anyway. To add insult to injury it didn't work anyway."

I made another offer/suggestion to let us help...

I didn't see the JBXP stuff. I rarely if ever go there. JBXP "refuses" to have a link to JB's website??? I find that hard to believe (not doubting you, just thinking outloud). Isn't it operated by the same camp? Isn't all this stuff (JBXP, this website and forum, the newsletters and promo emails) under one broad umbrella?

Re: To Watch This Video You Must Share It First

I can totally relate to most of the points raised here. I remind you all of the great 'post suggestions for the forum upgrade' topic started by Michel. We all posted loads of suggestions and questions, and what happened? Michel disappeared for three weeks before anything at all was done, there was no communication except for some very limited stuff the one day he actually spent some time here. Then, there were all sorts of glitches that could and should have been fixed in minutes, but took days and weeks.

As I see it, the essence of everything mentioned here is that the forum is very much the sisty ugler of the flagship XP, and head office is either unwilling or unable to understand that people who have been following and supporting Joe for years, think, feel, and react rather differently than the vast majority on XP who have discovered Joe only recently do. New converts are always more excited, and excitable, than older heads. That's just the way it is. On the whole, XP with its new marketing and promo gimmicks, just doesn't appeal to 'us' as much as it does to 'newbies'. That's also just how it is and nothing will change that.

I don't know what a fair and reasonable solution might be. Certainly, more effective and open communication would be nice. But, head office is always insanely busy with some project or another. There is always a reason why, for example, emails are not even answered. I will point this topic out to Alexis and ask him to comment.

They '' Alexis" on facebook says it will not work with internet explorer .  This is 1 of the stupidness promotions I have ever seen , Oh what a  minute  I did not see ANYTHING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why can't they get it right before putting it out there . Let people enjoy Joe without going thru all the BULL S*HT.

Re: To Watch This Video You Must Share It First

A little late to the party.  I actually deleted the email.  Then later I saw a friend "share" it on FB.  So I clicked on it, the page showed, try to view the video, nothing happened (in the Chrome browser)  #FAIL

Re: To Watch This Video You Must Share It First

OK i saw the email but didn't open it. I did see where Len had shared on his Facebook. I considered the source and shared it to watch the video. I thought that it was a pretty good trade. Share to watch. I thought the marketing idea was pretty ingenious. The link worked for me in Chrome.

I came here and was surprised by the response. Those of you that know me know I pretty much hate JBXP and have been supportive but critical of some of the other schemes. I'm just thankful we still have the forum.

I do however understand how some could be put off by the share mandate to watch. I just have to remember that over the years all kinds of Street Team efforts were tried. Some good some bad. I don't think this is as big a deal as it is made out to be. Might just be that it was an annoyance on top of many recent annoyances and kind of the straw that broke the camels back. Like Stu said he wondered if it was just the mood he was in. I was in the mood to see the video so I shared it and it worked so it didn't bother me a bit.

Totally agree.

BTW I've talked to Brett about it and he assured me it wouldn't happen again and that he's posting it on YouTube on monday!

Good Fix

I am not surprised by the response at all. No. 1 , the execution didn't work for a number of people.  Really, it doesn't work with internet explorer?  I do find that a big flaw in this marketing campaign.  Does that benefit your "ingenious marketing" if you send out something that a number of people are having problem viewing and then to top it off, it's mandatory you have to send it to someone that you probably like and they may not be able to view it as well?

I think these responses are acting as a great FEEDBACK to tell the "marketing people" that sent this out that you need to stop sending this and fix the video before a massive campaign.

If your execution is horrendous that just sunk your so called "ingenious marketing".

No. 2, the other thing some people don't like and I am in this camp, is you can't even view it first before you send it to somebody?   If I am your no 1 link to Joe, why would you bypass me to view it first?

I can tell this is very impersonal just by this factor.  More impersonal is the "You can't fight us" comment.  They were trying to help, not fight you.  What kind of customer service is that?  If you are seeing a lot of positive coming out of this type of marketing, then why would you have to make a comment like that?

I can see that I wouldn't use this marketing idea just from the responses here.
A number of the biggest Joe fans don't like it.  That tells me something.

Bottom Line, they would share it if they can see it first. But they don't want to share something that looks like spam, feel insulted, and they can't watch first. It leaves a bad taste in there mouth.

I want to taste the steak first, not you throw me a bone after.

Share to watch . Ingenious?   If I am buying a product, why would I want you to bypass me as a customer?  I wouldn't.  I want to see the product.  If you bypass me for another, maybe you are not interested in my business?

Luckily Joe's forum fans care enough to give you this kind of feedback because they care about him, more human than any marketing.

Other than this, a number of things about Joe's business model have been stellar.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol
